The D Word
As we walked up the sidewalk, it felt like we were walking a mile. My girlfriend was squeezing my hand tighter as we approached the house. We were about to drop a bomb shell on her parents. We had the unfortunate news to let them know they were about to be grandparents. At the time, we were about to start our senior year of high school not knowing what our future had in store for us. As we entered the home and proceeded to sit on the dining table, my girlfriend’s sobbing voice called for her parents to join us. At this point, I had knots in my stomach and wanted to run and hide. As we proceeded to tell them, I saw the look of disbelieve and disappointment in their face. That moment also brought tears to my eyes. After about an hour of being scolded and lectured, I felt worst thinking that we had to go through this same process all over again with my family. I should have learned my lesson about teenage pregnancy since my parents were also teenagers when they started their family. We were both raised with typical strict family values so there was no choice of adoptions or abortions. There is nothing that changes the facts that we were about to face the biggest challenges of our lives.
Teenage parenting is one of the most difficult tasks anyone could go through. At times it seemed I had the weight of the whole world on my shoulders. I had aspirations to go to college after high school, which was something not the norm in my family. With the pressure of my family telling me to do the right thing, I did what was expected from a soon to be father. On our high school graduation night and I went from a very joyous occasion to feeling sick to my stomach, at the dinner table in front of all our families. I did it.
