The Day I Met Him

A month ago I was put in a situation I never thought would come my way, I met my father. He had flown to Dallas to see me before my football season would start. That day was one I will never forget and never intend to forget. It was full of new experiences and an assurance that my father had acknowledged my existence, though I knew I had many doubts.
“Klunk” The trunk closes as I take my father’s luggage out of the car. The summer morning was dreary with clouds and the air was damp, like a day will be in the heat of Texas. I had been looking forward to this day for 16 years. But as the day started, the realization that a man who hasn’t made an effort to see me since the day I was born is going to meet me finally, sunk in. I realized that we were both just children on the first day of school to each other, quiet and shy.
We had finally left the airport and my mind had a million things running through it, but all I could mutter to my father was “Nice day today”. The awkwardness was oozing through the both of us, like soap from a sponge. After about 10 minutes of driving through downtown Dallas, my father finally muttered out “I guess you are wondering where I have been all this time”. “Well kind of” I replied, lying through my teeth. I did not want to admit the constant wonder I had of him, the overbearing curiosity of why he left, why he didn’t keep in touch, and why he avoided contact with me until now.
He began to tell me about his life from the very beginning. He said he was born in America but his parents were immigrants from Pakistan. He had lived on the east coast from his birth until is early twenties. He moved to Texas for a job opportunity, and that is where he met my mother. He said my mom was unlike any other women he had met. He had been with my mom in secret from his family, due to religious differences. He had been with her for 3 years until my mom became pregnant with me. Finally he asked my mom to marry him, and she said yes. But 3 months later, before the wedding, word got to his family and they forced him to return home or risk loss of inheritance.
I remember how the light, from the morning sun, shined in my eyes right as he said that, and how it made me look irritated. But in reality I was feeling sympathetic and angry for assuming that all this time he was avoiding me to escape from the responsibility of a child. But instead he was just being held back from me to appease his family. I remember how his eyes began to water as the words “I really have missed you” slipped from his mouth.
We were still on the road, stuck in traffic. It was amazing how in an instant my entire thought of a man could change. I slowly began to open up to him, telling him what I do I school, the sports I play, my friends. We both kept interrupting each other, because we both had so much to say. The only thing stopping us from speaking was the breaths we had to take between words.
The car stopped at a little Italian restaurant in downtown Dallas, I don’t remember the name but all I remember was my father’s faint attachment to it, as if it was very important to him. We ate our food and left, again a tear rushed his cheat. I could tell he didn’t want this day to end. We again began to speak, but this time it was a much more sorrowful kind of talk, like when a parent sees his or her child off to college.
We arrived back to the airport where my mom was waiting to get me. I handed all of my father’s suitcases back to him from the car, looked him in his eye. He brought me in for a goodbye hug he brought me in closer and whispered “I don’t know when I will see you again, but I want you to know it’s not my choice to be away”. He releases me, and with one final “I love you”, he was gone. I watched his plane leave the runway as my eyes began to water. I will never forget that one and only day with my father.

Love

... I fell in love with my high school sweetheart “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person” A happy marriage is one where you both work on issues to solve them, you both respect, and love each other, and want to be with your spouse like it was the first day you met, it’s when you know there may be bumps in the road, but together you will ride them out and emerge with them even stronger and have a stronger bond it’s when you know someone and that someone will always have your back and vise versa, it’s when you see each other after being apart even for a couple of hours and smile in a genuine way and having that happiness of being reunited. I would always not expect perfection to me a happy marriage means good communication skills both talking and listening, respect and responsibility for oneself. You should be able to be happy for each other when things are tough. You can be down on your luck, but a happy marriage means that at the end of the day you are happy to be with you your partner no matter what the circumstances may be. When you signed that paper, you made a promise to be with that person till death till you part. Falling in love with your partner many times might mean you should try different things. I fell in love with my boyfriend many times all over again like it was the first time I met him. I met him when I was in high school I was...

...we first met the first time. It was love at first sight I got butterflies in my stomach just being next to him. The moment I knew he was the one was after we were together for a year we had our ups and downs but at the end of the day we’d be in each other’s arms cuddling. The moment he said that he loved me I didn’t want to believe it because I was always the one to get hurt. But with him it was different I knew it was real after I acted as a surrogate mother for a married couple who couldn’t have a baby. He understood that I wanted to help them and that this was very important to me. He was very supportive he was there for me from day one of course he didn’t like the fact of me carrying someone else’s child. But we worked together and got through it no matter what situation I’m in he’s always there for me. The Theme of a Story

...his wife. She tells about the events when she was 15 that ironically led to the introduction of her eventual husband into her life. Clugston (2010) shows us that “we all filter our relationship to literature through our individual experiences” (Section 7.1, para. 4). In other words, personally, How I Met My Husband, by Alice Murno (1974), is written with the themes of love, heartbreak, and secrecy. Love is a common recurring theme throughout the story. Although love is a common theme in fiction, the type of love in this story is ignorant love. Edie is the main character of How I Met My Husband. Alice Murno sets the story in a first-person point of view. The reader captures the story from Edie’s viewpoint. Henry Baron tells us, “Edie is both eager for and rather innocent about romance” (Section The Story, para. 2). She is young and naïve to anything of love and intimate relationships. The connection she makes with Chris Watters and the eventual “intimacy” they share brings out the young innocent girl in her. Murno (1974) makes this clear in the story when she writes, “I had only kissed a boy on a dare before, and kissed my own arms for practice” (as cited in Clugston, 2010, How I Met My Husband). At the point in the story Mr. Watters is introducing Edie to the first intimate experience she will have. Even if it is just kissing. Although Edie has a burning passion for Chris, almost everyone’s first love will eventually...

Dave had been attending cancer patients' support group for a very long time and he was the one who introduced me to Charlie. I first met Charlie on a Thursday. I clearly remember the day. It was raining and I was just about to leave support group and walk out into the parking space, when Dave shouted out my name. I had seen Charlie at the meetings, but I had never spoken with him though - he was very shy, compared to Dave who is a very extrovert person. I went over to them and Dave introduced me to Charlie. We shook hands and I felt this weird connection right away. I didn’t get his number, so we didn’t talk until the next support group meeting. I had never been looking forward to support group meetings. I had always wanted to skip the meetings and lay in bed instead, but this time I was really looking forward to support group, I could barely wait. And that was mainly because I wanted to see Charlie again. But he didn’t show up for the next meeting. I sat next to Dave, but I didn’t want to ask him about Charlie. Dream on

...Like most young girls, I grew up dreaming of my wedding day. I would always picture myself standing in front of my family and friends in a beautiful, white gown. It felt like a fairytale with the typical happy ending where you would “ ride away into the orange sunset”. The vision was so clear that I could see the man of my dreams staring back at me. As I grew older, I realized the fairytale wedding and husband I always dreamed about was nothing more than a fantasy. It all began when I first met my prince charming at 16 years old. We met during the time of the evacuations for Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, LA. The high school I was attending had a lot of refugees enrolling in our school from there. When they did arrive, the environment of our school completely changed. There were fights between Houstonians and newly enrolled New Orleans Refugees, which, became routine at school. It seemed like every other day we had lockdowns because someone had weapons on school grounds or it was a gang related shooting. At that point, I was ready to leave the school because it was scary not knowing what could happen each day . Then one day, I came across a young man in my homeroom class. I could tell he was from New Orleans by the obvious accent. He was very...

The most amazing thing were the small shops, that are in la Rabla. There were many shops and restaurants. Most of the owners were from India or Pakistan. My friend and I, we lived in the middle of La Rambla. We were at a motel, where we slept and were served breakfast food. The other meals we ate, was outside, at different restaurants. We had to spend 5 days in Spain. We had been looking forward very much to the trip, we had heard so much about Spain from our friends who had been to Spain before. We had also learned Spanish at home, so we could communicate with people on the street and in stores. The first day we went to a Christian church in Spain. We would see the churches in spain and see what differences there were the Danish churches and Spanish churches. After we had been in the church, we were hungry, so we went out to eat. We found a turkey restaurant near our motel. On the way over to the restaurant, we meet a Spanish man, whom sat down on the floor. He sang a romantic song in India. Compare and Contrast

...Comparing and Contrasting “The Story of an Hour” and “How I Met My Husband”. Lora Cruse Ashford University ENG125 11/20/2014 In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting two great short stories. One being “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin in 1854 and the other being “How I Met my Husband” written by Alice Munro in 1974. The two short stories share the theme of gender roles/marriage. That being said,, I will be going over plot, point of view and tone. Sometimes women feel like they are trapped in their marriage, and sometimes women cannot wait to become married. Kate Chopin's “The Story of an Hour represents a negative view of marriage. Every individual takes a different approach when enduring the loss of a loved one. Whether it is bursting into tears or being miserable. When a wife loses a husband, she typically tends to be in a state of depression. The feeling of losing your significant other is a piercing agony going through one's heart, but in this case the feeling of loss can turn into someone's freedom. For Louise Mallard she had an erratic reaction when she was informed that her husband had been allegedly killed in a train accident. She locks herself in her room and sits in front of the window in desolation. She begins to ponder how her life will be without her husband. The sorrow that Mrs. Mallard felt in the beginning slowly turns into joy. “Free body and soul free!” (Chopin...
