Accepted 16 March, 2010 This study examined the role of guidance and counseling in promoting student discipline in secondary schools in Kisumu, District, Kenya. The study population comprised 4,570 students, 65 head teachers, 65 deputy head teachers, and 65 heads of Guidance and Counseling Department from all the 65 secondary schools in the District. Out of this, a sample of 22 head teachers, 22 deputy head teachers, 22 heads of Guidance and Counseling and 916 students from 22 secondary schools was selected through the simple random sampling technique. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study. These were interview schedule and a questionnaire. The data collected through questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies and percentages. While data collected using interview schedule were audio taped and transcribed into themes, categories and sub-categories as they emerged from the data. They were analyzed using summary Tables for the purpose of data presentation and interpretation. All three books, however, cite their practice as the solution for carnality and spiritual ineffectiveness of the church. All claim that spiritual disciplines are the means to bring God’s grace to bear on hearts that have become blind and dull of hearing. An implicit message of these books is that the practice of spiritual disciplines has been a hidden truth since Reformation days and that by going back to medieval days and exploring mysticism to find answers has merit. In order for this to occur, both autonomy and freedom must prevail within the classroom. Only in such an environment can children safely practise what it means to be free and autonomous individuals and learn how to responsibly exercise these rights. It is, perhaps, somewhat of a paradox that at the heart of both freedom and autonomy lie control and restraint. Children need to first learn these virtues in order to become free and autonomous individuals who are able to responsibly function within society and take full advantage of the opportunities available to them. In order for this to happen restraints may well be necessary. Teachers must have a degree of authority over children in order to educate them to exercise their freedom and autonomy responsibly.
