The conflict, resolution, and the characters’ actions in, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh,” written by Ray Bradbury all contribute to the development of the story’s theme. The theme of, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh,” is to have courage and be brave in times of fear and doubt. The general of the army told the drum boy of Shiloh, Joby, that he had to be the heart of the army, which meant being brave and having courage for the troops going to battle. Knowing this, Joby, was able to have enough self-motivation to have courage and be brave for the upcoming battle. The general’s actions in the story help Jobby to be brave by telling him that he is the heart of the army. The general said to Jobby, “You are the heart of army.” “If he, Joby, beat slow tomorrow, the heart would beat slow in the men. But if he beat a sure, steady, ever faster rhythm, then, then, their knees would come up in a long line down over that hill, one knee after the other, like a wave on the ocean shore.” I can infer that the general was implying that if Joby has a strong, brave, and encouraging beat; being positive, that the army would win the battle and make it through.
