Nintendo

...Nintendo is a multinational video game company located in Kyoto, Japan. Founded on September 23, 1889, it began as a playing card manufacturer, followed by a trial and error phase in which the corporation experimented with several niche businesses such as a cab company and a hotel, before settling into video games in 1974. Today, Nintendo is synonymous with innovation and a family friendly gaming atmosphere. [Nintendo Logo] Released in 2006, Nintendo’s “premiere product,” per se, is the motion-sensing video game console Wii. [Wii Image] Using a remote and camera combination to detect player arm movement, the Wii has a large game library ranging from the traditional Mario games to Sports games such as golf, baseball, tennis, and bowling that have the player using realistic motions (swinging, throwing) to control the game. [Wii-Mote] [Wii-Camera] The Wii was originally released at the US $299.99 price point, which was a calculated decision considering Nintendo’s competition, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, were at least $100 more expensive at the time. Today, The Wii is priced at $199.99 US and comes with one Wii-mote/Motion camera set. [Xbox 360] Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 Release Price $299.99 $399.99 $499.99 Current Price: $199.99 $199.99 $299.99 [Playstation 3] Known for colorful, fairly simple, easy to understand games, the Wii quickly emerged as the leader in the current generation of gaming consoles with its family friendly appeal and lower...

...Alabama Atlantic would like to determine the optimal shipping routes for its lumber and the amount to be shipped on each route, in order to minimize the total equivalent uniform annual cost. It is my understanding that the company has three sources of wood, with annual availabilities of 15, 20, and 15 million board feet respectively. Additionally, the company has 5 markets it sells to, which have annual demands of 11, 12, 9, 10, and 8 million board feet respectively. Because the estimated supply and demand of wood is in equilibrium, it is important to meet the full demand in each market. It is also important that total amount shipped does not exceed the available supply. Alabama Atlantic has two possible methods to ship the wood. They can either ship it by train or by ship. Depending on the specific source and market, it can be less costly to use one method over the other. However, it is important to note that using ships may require a large capital investment. I have had a chance to determine the potential shipping plans for Alabama Atlantic and have analyzed the company’s situation. I was able to solve this as a linear programming problem using Microsoft Excel, however some assumptions had to be made. First, the production costs are assumed to be the same at each source, so that the only relevant costs are for shipping. Second, the cost of shipping is assumed to be constant no matter what quantity is...

Nintendo: Horizontal Differentiation in an Oligopoly

...Gregory Passani Economics 106T Professor Board December 2, 2010 Nintendo: Horizontal Differentiation in an Oligopoly “The game has changed, ... and the way the game is played has to be changed.” —Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co. Ltd (Malstrom) Nintendo has been a major player in the technology and gaming industry ever since entering into electronics in 1970. While for years it dominated the market for virtual gaming, a rise in competition within the industry presented serious challenges for the company. After struggling for the first five years of the new millennia, Nintendo made an exceptional comeback with its innovative products, the Wii and the DS, that shook the market and brought in a whole new set of customers. Their new strategy was so successful it allowed the company to be ranked the second most valuable Japanese firm after Toyota in 2007 (Farhoomand 6 ). Despite its recent success, Nintendo must look ahead and act strategically as its competitors begin to adapt to the new market trends. Market Background The Birth of Gaming The electronic gaming industry began with a few very basic games in the 1970s. At first, they appeared in the form of coin-operated machines in public places, with games like Pac Man and Donkey Kong before moving to home entertainment with hits like Atari’s Pong (Vaughan 13). A major shift in the quality of in-home gaming came with Nintendo’s release of Famicon in Japan and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the United States...

Blue Ocean Strategy

...Criticisms While Kim and Mauborgne propose approaches to finding uncontested market space, at the present there are few success stories of companies that applied their theories in advance. One success story that does exist is Nintendo, who first applied the Blue Ocean Strategy to create the Nintendo DS handheld game system which was the first portable gaming system to offer dual screen gaming and a touch screen in 2004. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii, which redefined how video games are played by. The 3DS is Nintendo's third endeavour for its blue ocean strategy. Its first two attempts, the Nintendo DS and Wii, were wildly successful, becoming some of the biggest selling platforms in history. Nintendo revealed their Blue Ocean Strategy during an E3 press conference during the hype build-up of the Wii. However with just one case study, this hole in their data persists despite the publication of Value Innovation concepts since 1997. Hence, a critical question is whether this book and its related ideas are descriptive rather than prescriptive.[10] The authors present many examples of successful innovations, and then explain from their Blue Ocean perspective – essentially interpreting success through their lenses.[11] The research process followed by the authors has been criticized[11] on several grounds. Criticisms include claims that no control group was used, that there is no way to know how many companies using a Blue Ocean Strategy failed and the theory is thus unfalsifiable...

...By Ahsan Manazir [pic] My aim is to investigate the role of the creativity in the business Game station, which is one of the UK’s leading computer and video games retailer. The definition of an aim is a target or to intend to move towards a certain goal. An objective is a goal that an individual or a team works toward to attain the end target. My objective for this particular research activity is to investigate different ways and ideas the business company Game station uses to improve creativity to attract customers. Primary research includes collecting data that does not already exist and therefore this could be data collected first hand. Examples could be conducting interviews or handing out questionnaires or observations. I will use secondary research which is data that already exists; this could be through published or recorded data that has already been collected for some other purpose rather than the current study. Therefore my research methods will consist of research from the internet and various websites. Game station provides customer service through numerous branches around the UK. Their products range from video games to electronic gadgets such as X-Box or Nintendo Wii, which are displayed throughout the shop for customers to observe and enquire about. The consumers for such products in Game station include children, teenagers as well as adults as most gadgets are designed for all ages while games on the other hand can specifically target a certain age group....

Based in Kyoto, the company changed its business and has become well-known all over the world for its numerous innovations in interactive entertainment. Nintendo has been manufacturing and selling hardware and software for systems such as Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi from the 1980’s. Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokémon, or Zelda for the most famous characters from Nintendo’s video games, still are great classic nowadays and are recognisable by most of people. The corporation is now one of the most popular and the leader of the video games market. It could be argued that its continued success as a gaming company is due attributable to an understanding of the psychology of marketing and consumer behaviour. This assignment will evaluate the extent to which Nintendo have successfully applied the theories and topics studied as part of the module of Psychology of Marketing. Each part of this assignment will consider a different aspect of the consumer behaviour: perception, attitude, motivation and involvement. “Customer perception is reality” (Piercy, 2009) “What is the first thing that pops into your head?” This is the question asked by Brand tags, a website which registers words or phrases sent by internet users who answer this question...
