As I twist my mind thinking about the topic that has given to me. I fist thought that this topic is very easy. In connection to easy, it is very short. Now the problem comes up, how I will balance my thoughts into wording in a ten pages essay? It is hard for us to expand the issue of these laconic ideas that build my theme.
On the day that this essay project introduced to us, professor said that he asked other seminarian especially the higher year, and they said that the ten pages essay is not enough for them. Yes, for them, but for us, a beginner in the turf of philosophy, it is very difficult to us to do this work and just say 'job well done'.
This article of essay project will measure are transcendental ability, to go beyond our limit. Moreover, I think this is lessons that I will learn from this work. We are learning our subject and in the same time, we are exceeding our potentials and widening our mind in the society or community we belong.
While I am thinking on how to set up my theme into organized details, brain storming and concept mapping pop in the lead. In addition, I found out that my topic was full of vast ideas. Thinking that my topic was so easy, yes it is so easy but full of thoughts. For me enable to swim this wide ocean of ideas, I need to configure my thoughts and get the pearl of the orient of each subject matter that are included here.
The title of my essay is technology and morality. It has a two parts; first, the part one, “the effect of computer in children s' morality; then the part two, “the social media modifying the moral standard of humanity. Nevertheless, this essay will focused only on the part one; respectively it is all about the impact of computer to the one of the parts of our society, the children. The children have a great role in our life. It is a stage of process where the stepping-stone for adolescent and adulthood stage. Hold on, because these we are going to talk about, childhood, morality, technology, and many more. These topics are demanding in our minds, especially when we talk about technology. Because we are living in a world of modernized, computerized, innovated technology, we are too familiar about this matter. Many questions come into my mind when I started to think about my topic. Does the computer have an effect to the morality of children? If yes, how? What is the difference between the morality of the children in the past and now, in this present time? How we define morality if morality itself has an issue? So what, if the computer modified the morality of the children, does it affect us? What do I care if it has an effect on me, do I can do something? Do I change the reality? What is my role in learning this; I am just a simple student of Divine Word Mission Seminary? These and many more other questions are yet to come. I will try to answer those questions in the very best I can to satisfy your mind.
However, before we tackle about children, morality, etc, we should first look on the root of our topic. What is our object or item? Surely, it is the computer.
Now a day’s computer is very essential. It is now commonly use in our daily lives. Before we tackle the computers’ effect in our society, let us draw first what is computer. How did it start? What is the function of computer?
So how did the computers start? We should know the first step of joining the information age including the understanding on how we got to where we are today. Deepening our knowledge to computer will help us to understand fully this essay and my topic. The history of computer started more than five thousand years ago. It is by gradual evolution and process of innovation why we called it computer today. Before then, they have devices used for arithmetic computation. It was first introduce by the oriental world. Then the medieval age come, and they raised the first mechanical calculating machine, capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. In industrial revolution, the concept of computer was born. Moreover, in the pre opening of the 21st century, computer was totally mold. Now as we live in this era, a time which far from the past and a future predicted by the past, the advancement of technology is rapidly changing to its higher level, it is much modernize than before
So now, we know how the computer develops and made its name in our present civilization, let us open on what is the definition of computer. Technically speaking, computer is an electro-mechanical device capable of storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instruction given to a variable program; a programmable machine that stores and retrieves data, and performs high-speed logical and mathematical operation [1]. Wow! What a definition, and to make it simple, it is a machine operated or run by program. It functions through the language of its program. The computer is an unlimited-limited task machine; unlimited, because whatever the user wants to put an instructions to the computer, he can do so, in any task at all; limited, because it functions only on a given task, nothing more nothing less. It may have an error due to power fluctuation, system malfunction and human disorder.
Nothing the less, it serves in our daily living for a great purpose.
Let us put a glimpsed on how does the child develop and the role of himself in our society. What is childhood?
From handouts of a psychology book, childhood starts from two to twelve years old. Early childhood begins from two years old until six years old, while late childhood starts from six up to twelve years old. Child in early childhood is a pre-operational period [2]. Intelligence at this stage, it is intuitive, because children cannot make a general, logical statement [3]. They respond to objects and events according to the way things to be. In later part of childhood, late childhood, they are now cannot be fooled by appearance. They can now understand the basic principle and properties relating to objects and event in everyday world. Development of social perspective is larger in this stage [4].
In those words, we can figure it out the great role in conforming children’s formation especially their morality. Computer has a great impact and effect in our world.

And what is morality that we are talking about in our topic? Morality in the simplest explanation is the quality of human act by which we call them right or wrong (good and evil). While the children are growing up, understanding about morality, distinguished the good and evil, is very essential.
It is so important that in this level of formation, the knowledge, the wisdom, and all the learning should be in the right path. It is hard for a nail to make it straight when it is already on the wood, so while it was nailing, we should make it right. Like a teenager, it is hard to form them when their foundation of formation is bad. An old Filipino quotation says, “Putulin na ang sungay habang bata pa”.
First thing first, who has the great role in modifying the morality of the children? First in the list, the parents, they are the major guru of children’s morality. Next, the School, as learning institution for them, where they get their eyes to see the world and to gain knowledge for future purposes then, the church, they lead the children in their spiritual journey along with their morality. Second to the last, their peers and the society where they belong. Lastly, the social media and the technological advancement, where it has a great impact for the children’s world, are now emerging as a tsunami in the life of an individual.
Computer technology has ushered in a new era of mass media, bringing with its great promises and concerns about the effect on children’s development and well-being. Computer world consider as the bible of the children in getting ideas about life. Computer is accessible to all, even as young as three years old, can now access and use the computer. In fact, computer is the greatest tool now days to answer all the needs for human comfort ability. Somehow, when we look in the positive side of its effect to us, we may both agree for computer liberalism or freedom. Nevertheless, unfortunately, the sad truth about computer now days, is demoralizing the children’s life. In addition, it might happen that someday, no children in this era can distinguish on what is right and what is wrong in the future. I hope so, it will not happen to us. Now let us show the effect of computer in children’s morality.
Let us attack first the cultural effect in relation to computer. Computer can access by anyone, they can input and output data whatever they want. Here, the children are in danger, because they are vulnerable in the massive negative effect of this machine. The traditional parent-child bonding is now degrading because the time that should be spending with their parents was converted to the life in computer. Parents are now having a hard time to compete with the computer in catching the attention of their child. Based on a survey from Children’s Data Bank, six out of ten children use internet at home and 85% had access of computer in their home [5]. Some parents think that it is safer to mingle their child in the internet than in personal. In some countries in Asia, especially here in the Philippines, the cultural reformation by the social media is now westernizing our culture and traditions. The morality that our grand ancestor built is now degrading because of colonial mentality that the computer brought. The meaning of family on the children’s mind is interconnecting and associate to social networking because of computers. This machine is depriving the essence of a family and the importance of cultural breeding.
What are the elements of computer that we can say it is harmful for the children? To enumerate, they are the social networking sites, online and offline gaming applications, Websites and WebPages, input devices, extended miniature computer machines or innovative computer gadgets, and many more.

Social networking sites are the biggest and the largest social communication aid. As it is the largest, children are more prone in danger every time they surf and use it without the guidance of their parents. Because of curiosity and the attractiveness of these sites, children are now addicted to it. They do not know what is on the other side of their movements. Reading a post and comments in SNS (social networking sites) can harm the moral stability of a child. Even his psycho-emotional area can be affect by these sites. Children even in young age can do dishonesty. Example in Facebook, some of their information is far from the truth. They try to tell lies just to cover their identity so that they can gain friends. Posting in their best shot and editing their picture just to show only the good side of their identity. This can lead in corrupting the minds of the children in terms of loyalty and being true to their selves. We can call this outcome as demoralized morality.
In the same factor, social networking sites, personal communication of a child with their same age is now in virtual world. They already forget what proper manner in personal communication is. The wordings and the way they speak in the outside world are just the same in cyber space. Bad words, malicious words and jokes that came from the social networking sites are just common in the tongue of our children today. A sad reality that is hard to accept, but it is happening right now.
Next field of computer world, online and offline games applications. Gaming consoles and devices, online and offline games, and application are very popular for the children. Sometimes it is the bonding time between the parents and their children. It is a leisure time for kids. However, what are these games? Character of gaming applications are Arcade, Puzzle, Sports, Racing, and Campaign. While the children are playing these various games, the impact of these are gradually entering into their mind. The huge impact to the psycho-emotional behavior of the children is unobtrusive. The goal of each game is winning against the other, which is the philosophy of the game. One will win and the other will lose. In this kind of game concept, even the young generation are taking and using it in practical life. Having this notion, competition is nailing the morality of the children. Competition itself is good, but if other factor especially pride will draw from it; it can lead the children into the world of decadence. Somehow, the idea of violence, which the games of computer technology want to imply, is now acceptable for a way of solving conflict. Planting the idea of violence in the children’s mind is leading them to anxiety, self-protective behaviors and mistrust to others in their own age. To cut it short, violence can make the kids vulnerable to the negative effect of games lead by the modern technology.

Websites and Web pages are also present in computer. In outside world, beyond the context of seminary, a computer without an internet is useless. In the internet, all things are here. All we want to see, to hear, to watch, and to know are all in just one click. This is what I found, the meaning of internet. The word “God” when I type it in the Google, it gives 343,000,000 results in just 0.23 seconds. While, when I type the word “good”, it shows me of 1,580,000,000 results in just 0.14 seconds. Now you will be amazed that when I type the word “porn”, it presents a 1,740,000,000 result in just 0.11 seconds. It is more results and faster than the word “good”. Moreover, the word “sex”, when I type it in the search engine of Google, it offers 3,310,000,000 outcomes in 0.13 seconds. “Sex” is more popular and most made sites in the internet than the word and concept of “God”. It is faster and 10 times higher rate than the word “God” [6].

Now tell me, what is internet? Is internet is home for kid? If this is the case, better to pray for our future generation. A generation full of immorality.
We can associate the word child pornography in internet. Sad to hear, but this is the reality; immoral thinkers, they said that cybersex is safer than in personal. Yes, it is true, reality speaking, you cannot be pregnant in cybersex or something wrong might happened but morally speaking it is a big NO! No! Pornography is now rapidly spreading just like a disease. It is not just about the spreading but it also touched the age echelon of our society. Users of internet pornography are getting younger and younger. Moreover, if we do not take any action, our world will be in vain. Child pornography and sexual solicitation are exploiting the young mind of our incoming generation. Remedies focused on parents as the gatekeeper for safeguarding children from potential harm may not be sufficient. Therefore, in addition to provide support for parents, various groups are working to improve the quality of media content for children. I think it is not enough for all the solution that they come to resolve their problem. Even there is a filter or banned the sites; you cannot assure that your child is safe from the internet. Remember that in the internet we are free to input and out the data.
Cyber bullying and cyber war is now outraging to our community. The children that can easily access in this kind of experience in the net are vulnerable to immorality.
The portal and depth of the computer is there anyone who can regulate us. The computers’ promise for us is really exceeding its point. Computer has made for us so that we can be convenient in our daily living. Nevertheless, this promise is turning to a curse. A curse that will degrade our life, demoralized our soul, and setting immorality especially to the young mind of the children will totally up rise. Yes, the computer is very useful today, so we cannot do anything, the computer is there. You cannot stop the user that uses their freedom to take advantage. In addition, the children of our today’s world are paying the debt that these machines do. We should control the computer and not the computer who controls us. Still there is a hope; it is our ability to use this technology in a way that does not subjugate our humanity and the morality of our children’s generation. Human made this micro chips and we are the one who can solve this. It is in our hand the solution for all the tribulations. Evil will not win against good, what is good and moral will reign in every heart of all people.

The Effect of Computer in Children's Morality

...Using a computer everyday can have more negative than positive effects on children. Do you agree or disagree? It has generally been observed that children are increasingly using computer every day. As the statement indicates, I also believe that using computer daily by children would have more adverse impacts on children rather than positive ones. In following I will investigate this issue furthermore. Firstly, we all know that children require physical activities. Accordingly, in many cases using every day computer leads to some health issues such as obesity and poor eyesight. Secondly, according to many experts, using computer in some cases can be addictive. Thus, it may cause some children to spend the majority of their time with it. Thirdly, when children have daily access to computer, they might encounter to some undesired contents such as sexual or violence material which can disturb them mentally and psychologically. For instance, few months ago my younger brother, who is 6 years old, saw a very violent clip in YouTube. As a result of this event, for almost a week my baby brother couldn’t sleep regularly. Of course I wrote a complaint to YouTube and requested them to remove that clip, but unfortunately the harm has been done. However, one can argue that, computers are essential devices, therefore, it is impractical for anyone to avoid them even children. I also believe this is a valid point and children can gain a lot from computers, but by proper and monitored...

Title VII Debate

...Morality is, at its core, a personal and often varying standard from one being to another. The restriction of morality by government to fit a set mold is both counterintuitive and extremely damaging to individual rights regarding the interpretation of morality. Even so, blue laws, laws that place limitations on what is considered moral in higher society and the general community at large have consistently been created. While in rare instances these blue laws are harmless, in most instances the government oversteps their bounds and infringes upon basic human rights. Our government has every right to create laws for morality that protect the rights and safety of the citizenry, but when legislation is used to establish a code for intrapersonal...

On-Line Privacy: Intrusion Between Children and Parents

... Professor Morgan REL 330 Christian Morality 21 October 2010 On-line Privacy: Intrusion Between Children and Parents In today’s society the technology is impeccably innovating and eye catching, especially when it comes to cell phones and computers. It seems like no-one does nothing but text, e-mail, and stay in chat rooms on MySpace, Twitter and Facebook cites. It is hardly imaginable to allow children on the computer without filters, monitors, and supervision. But when does it become a privacy issue between children and their parents? Teens are often exposed to potential privacy risks online due to marketing platforms like some of the names mentioned above. Another issue to deal with is on-line sexual predators and pedophiles that are on the loose, targeting children on the computer had and still is an issue in today’s modern society. When does it stop? Will it ever? Where are the moral values? Will parents take a stand for what is right for the children even if a teenager believes that they are being protected because they used false information in their profile? When we define the word intrusion it means: an illegal act of entering, seizing, or taking possession of another's property. I’m sorry, but as a parent I believe my children don’t own anything they don’t have the right to say I can take you to court mom for taking my computer, regardless if you earned it with allowance given by your parents. Some children seem...

Effect of Internet Among Children

...Custom effect of the Internet on children: critical analysis essay paper writing service Buy effect of the Internet on children: critical analysis essay paper online One of the challenges of forming an understanding of the effect of the Internet on children is that kids may agree to something, yet behave in a way that contradicts the agreement. An example is the issue surrounding children watching various materials on the Web, which should normally be subject to parental discretion. Surveys of users indicate that parents often fail to adequately control their kids’ Internet surfing. This becomes especially true for 12-13 year old children, as they are believed to become more responsible in terms of selecting a proper content on the Web (Roberts, Foehr, and Rideout 45-47). If such behavior becomes socially accepted, then it starts constituting part of positive morality. Consequently, laws have little meaning unless the public's code of ethics and understanding of morals and fairness result in acceptance and adherence. In other words, there is no clear law prohibiting children from accessing sites with ‘adult’ content as their parents are generally held responsible for the kids’ behavior. This paper, by referring to a number of scholarly articles and sources, discusses the effect of Internet on children, arguing that modern legal and social system fails to adequately protect youngsters from the adverse affects the Web has on the kids. It may be appropriate to restrict children's...

Censorship Online

...almost find everything they want on internet no matter the information they found is right or wrong. Is it necessary to censor the internet and restrict the access to harmful contents? This is a controversial topic that leads to a hot debate these years. Some people think censorship can work effectively and is necessary on internet, while others think not. In the main part, the essay will explain and give evidence about how censorship can work in some cases but may become negatives in others. There is no doubt that internet censorship can work in some cases, especially when it comes to some vulnerable groups on internet such as children, youth and the old. One of the obvious instances for internet censorship would be the declaration of Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) by Federal Communications Commission, which aimed to protect children from accessing to obscene or harmful content on the Internet. The protection measures include three parts: blocking or filtering the internet access to child pornography, obscene materials and preventing harmful materials to...

Pornography on Public Library Computers

...Pornography on Public Library Computers An Ethical Controversy by Bret Clancy Ever since the fall of man the seed of immorality has continued to grow, adapt, and morph like the influenza virus. Pornography is one of those immoral viruses that persistently sicken societies. Scientists continue to make vaccines against the illness and while some are more effective than others, none of them have ever cured the illness. The same can be said of pornography. Defining pornography is not black and white. There are a variety of definitions for pornography and some definitions are used by individuals to help their cases when taking legal action. Merriam-Webster defines pornography as, “the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction” (merriam-webster.com). Merriam-Webster describes pornography in a docile manner making it appear inviting. The Oxford dictionary defines pornography in a more intense visual cue of the actual intent. The definition states pornography is, “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement” (oxforddictionaries.com). Dictionary.com defines pornography as, “obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, especially those having little or no artistic merit” (dictionary.reference.com). They appeal to the artistic aspect of pornography by stating that pornography is not art because of the obscene nature...

Video Games: a Boon, Not a Plague

...English 110 R75 October 18, 2013 Video games: a boon, not a plague We all have that one day of the week where we just want to cut loose from the burden of work and assignments. This “free” day would be used to engage in leisure activities which would reduce stress such as playing video games. However, the video game industry has come under heavy fire from the mainstream media, whom claim that there is a direct link between video games and violence amongst gamers. Despite the numerous reports that claim it is directly related to violence, video games are beneficial because they enhance the cognitive flexibility and teach moral lessons. Video games are games that are played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or any other display. Video gaming has become increasingly popular because some people feel the need to “escape” from the harsh reality, and dive into their fantasy realm that is video games. Whether players take the role of the great detective they dream to be in “L.A. Noire” and bring criminals to justice, or a Dark Lord of the Sith and spread fear across the galaxy in “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic”, they indefinitely found their place and enthusiasm in video games. As a matter of fact, certain genres of video games are now played as a competitive sport; Counter-Strike (First Person Shooter), Starcraft (Real Time Strategy) and even the football simulated game of FIFA are now played as a competitive sport...

The Effects of Watching Tv Cartoon Program on the Behavior of Grade One Pupils in Brion-Silva Elementary School

...The Effect of T.V. Cartoon Network on the Aggressive Behavior of Grade One Pupils in Brion-Silva Elementary School A Title Proposal Presented to DR. JOCELYN CASTILLO In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements In EDUC 501 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY By: MELANNIE D. ARCENAS MAED-EM CHAPTER I The Problem and Its Background Introduction The environment in the twenty-first century is media rich. People of all ages are surrounded by media from morning until night. We hear it greet us on our alarm clocks or on the radio in our vehicles, see it on billboards outside or in magazines while waiting for the doctor, and view it using computers, playing gaming devices or when watching television. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents school going children to no more than 1 to 2 hours of quality educational television content per day, and that children under the age of two not be exposed to any type of television or screen time at all (Anderson & Pempek, 2005; AAP, 1995; Anderson et al., 2003). These limits are prescribed to allow for children’s developing minds to use imagination, explore the world and increase physical activity and interaction with family or friends (Funk, Brouwer, Curtiss & McBroom, 2009). However, parents and other adults seem to be taking this recommendation lightly. One of the largest national studies of preschool-aged media effects, the Kaiser Family Report (2003), showed that the use...

Lack of entertainment can however cause the brain to shut down. Entertainment enables s sense of innovation. As a result, numerous ideas are created. Studies show that almost half of discoveries are done during entertainment when the inventor enjoys the task he partakes. However, over entertainment has its own pitfalls. This paper argues that society is becoming over entertained. Generation Fun: Are we as a Society Becoming over Entertained? In a society where we are overwhelmed by bright lights, images, and electrical gadgets it is worth questioning one of the most important parts of our society, Entertainment. Entertainment is multidimensional and could be personal or involve the general public. Playing a game of chess or scrabble could be viewed as a personal form of entertainment. Watching a movie however is a general form of entertainment as the experience is shared with the general public. As entertainment continues to become a trillion-dollar industry, the society has continued to live up to the entertainment culture of the “entertainment age.” The question, “Are we as a society becoming over entertained?” can be approached using different angles given its complexity. I have developed my point of view that as a society, we are spending too much time on entertainment or enjoyment. Entertainment can take an individual...

Advertising Ethics: Alcohol and Tobacco

...I. Introduction Commercial advertising is defined as, “communication between a seller and potential buyers that is publicly addressed to a mass audience and is intended to induce members of this audience to buy the seller’s product.” (Velasquez, 2012, p. 322) However, it is clear that advertising often delivers little information and is often accused of violating several ethical standards. The question begs to be asked, in the quest to sell a product, are advertisers in fact selling their souls? Advertising is essential to a company’s success and utilized to generate revenue and profits. While it can be argued that all advertisements are manipulative, the public deserves to know what options they have when making purchases. If advertising were consistent in its standards of use, (delivering only useful information with only words and no other image appeal) then there would be no predicament to its ethical framework. The fact remains that advertising can often be manipulative create false desires and the power advertising agencies exert over the general public is not being used responsibly. Essentially, advertising is trying to accomplish four objectives: first, advertisements are meant to create awareness, second they strive to establish a brand’s name and identity, third advertisements seek to provide information to the public in a way that is memorable and lastly, and controversially, advertisements are used to convince the consumer that he or she will be better off...
