Abstract (50 Words)
Previous studies have shown that the choice of entry mode depends on various types of aspects, containing also cultural distance between countries (Arora and
Fosfuri, 2000). However, there is not a lot of consensus among these articles. A few articles mentioned the effect of language distance on entry mode choice.
Keywords: Cultural distance, entry mode choice and language distance

1. Introduction
In this time of globalization a lot of companies are expanding their international business activities in overseas market. The ways in which firms are expanding their business in overseas market differ per enterprise and country. The hierarchical model of market entry modes by Pan and Tse (2000) shows that there are different choices of entry modes. Entry modes can be seen as equity-based versus non-equity based. Within equity-based modes, there is a division between equity joint ventures and wholly owned operations. Within nonequity based modes, there is a division between export and contractual agreements. Prior research demonstrated that the choice of entry modes rely upon different types of components. Especially, a lot of previous studies focused on the effect of cultural distance on entry mode choices. Most of the articles exposed that as cultural distance increases, firms are likely to choose non-equity modes over equity modes (Arora and Fosfuri, 2000).
There is no consensus among the articles about the relationship between cultural distance and entry mode choice. In addition to that, few articles pointed out the influence of language distance on entry mode

We review 180 studies published in 40 business and psychology journals and two international annual volumes between 1980 and June 2002 to consolidate what is empirically verifiable about Hofstede’s cultural values framework. We discuss limitations in the Hofstede-inspired research and make recommendations for researchers who use Hofstede’s framework in the future. However, the international business literature appears to lack an adequate conceptualization and definition of the term ‘CC’, focusing instead on the knowledge, skills and attributes that appear to be its antecedents. In this conceptual study, we propose a definition of CC as it applies to international business and develop a model for understanding how CC is nurtured in individuals, linking our definition to the concept of cultural intelligence. We discuss the components of the model and suggest that there are environmental and contextual impediments to the effective application...

The Influence of the Culture Dimension ‘Power Distance’ on Product Choice: a Cross Cultural Exploration of Effects of Country of Origin on the Choice of Branded Products

...The Influence of the Culture dimension ‘Power Distance’ on product choice: A Cross Cultural Exploration of Effects of Country of Origin on the Choice of Branded Products by Adriana Cordeiro Socha A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Marketing and Consumer Studies Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Adriana Cordeiro Socha, September, 2012 ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF THE CULTURE DIMENSION ‘POWER DISTANCE’ ON PRODUCT CHOICE: A CROSS CULTURAL EXPLORATION OF EFFECTS OF CULTURAL TRAITS ON THE CHOICE OF BRANDED FOREIGN PRODUCTS Adriana Cordeiro Socha University of Guelph, 2012 Advisor Dr. Brent McKenzie Committee Dr. Vinay Kanetkar Dr. Sara Mann This thesis investigates how cultural traits, such as the cultural dimension of Power Distance, influence preference for foreign made branded products. Cultural background influences several aspects of human behaviour, including the behaviours of consumers. In marketing, individual cultural differences affect consumers’ choice as well as their response to advertising message and brand associations. One example, impact on consumer choice, is related to the country of origin (COO) of the product. The effect of COO has been extensively explored in the literature. However, cultural frameworks like those of Hofstede (2001) have seldom been considered as a factor explaining the variability of consumers’ preference (or avoidance) for products originating in different...

...Correspondence: J Johanson, Uppsala University, PO Box 513, SE-751 20, Uppsala, Sweden. Tel: þ 46 859255215; E-mail: jan.johanson@fek.uu.se Abstract The Uppsala internationalization process model is revisited in the light of changes in business practices and theoretical advances that have been made since 1977. Now the business environment is viewed as a web of relationships, a network, rather than as a neoclassical market with many independent suppliers and customers. Outsidership, in relation to the relevant network, more than psychic distance, is the root of uncertainty. The change mechanisms in the revised model are essentially the same as those in the original version, although we add trust-building and knowledge creation, the latter to recognize the fact that new knowledge is developed in relationships. Journal of International Business Studies (2009), 40, 1411–1431. doi:10.1057/jibs.2009.24 Keywords: internationalization theories and foreign market entry; network relations theory; experiential knowledge; commitment; trust; opportunity Received: 10 July 2007 Revised: 15 October 2008 Accepted: 4 November 2008 Online publication date: 21 May 2009 INTRODUCTION Much has changed since our model of the internationalization process of the firm was published in the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) ( Johanson & Vahlne, 1977). Antecedents of Commitment to an Import Supplier

...Antecedents of Commitment to an Import Supplier Saleh @ 2006 Key Words: 1. Antecedents of commitment 2. Importer’ s commitment 3. Importer supplier relationship 4. Mediating role of trust 5. Cultural similarity 6. Communication 7. Knowledge and experience 8. Supplier’ s opportunism 9. Environmental volatility 10. Transaction-specific investment 11. Supplier’s competencies ii Abstract The concept of commitment has emerged recently in international business literature especially in explaining importer behaviour as a counterpart of the process of internationalisation. Importer commitment often plays a dominant role as one of the major factors influencing relationships in the exporter-importer dyad and facilitates the process of internationalisation by imparting access to the international market. This critical importer and supplier relationship and its animating factors are, however, overlooked and largely neglected in the literature. Accordingly, it is inconclusive as to which factors influence importer commitment and how they influence it. Drawing on the literature, this study strived to investigate the spectrum of importer commitment and has explicitly examined eight factors influencing importer commitment to a foreign supplier by integrating the factors in a comprehensive model. Cultural similarity between importer and overseas supplier, knowledge and experience of the importer, the supplier’s competencies, communication between importer and supplier, the supplier’ s opportunism...
