Throughout centuries, many languages have been disappearing due to political and social impacts. Many schools do not have the funding to be able to teach a certain language and many people choose not to speak their native or cultural language as well. There are many different languages that have gone extinct due to these issues and impacts. Navajo and Gaelic are considered endangered languages due to these political and social issues. Some of the political issues are the lack of funding from the government to the schools and the lack of experience from teachers who are not able to speak and teach the language. The government in Scotland is not giving enough funding to keep Gaelic classes in Scottish schools. Many schools in Scotland do not have teachers who are enforcing Gaelic or are not teaching Gaelic adequately. The government in Scotland is having a hard time to fund schools who teach Gaelic, since Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Schools think that Gaelic-medium schools should be lowered to just a single course (Matheson, 214). The government in Scotland thinks it is time to move on from the Gaelic language. Margaret B. Sutherland explains in her article “Problems of Diversity in Policy and Practice: Celtic languages in the United Kingdom” that Scottish schools are not making an effort to train teachers to teach Gaelic, which makes them to lack experience when teaching Gaelic, especially in the secondary school level (Sutherland, 204-205). Knowledge needs to be passed by a teacher, if the teacher does not have any Gaelic speaking skills, then the Gaelic language will never be comprehended by students. Like how Papia Segupta said in his article, “Language is not simply a tool for communication but is a central and defining feature of identity….,” (Segupta, 17). The definition of culture for me is one’s beliefs and customs, without culture there will not be human diversity, which is necessary to give the opportunity to people to learn and engage a new culture, but language is the foundation of culture. In my opinion, bilingualism is important because it creates diversity, which is a quality that many people are looking for because bilingualism helps people from different cultures to communicate with one another and to really know the true meaning of diversity.
