The title, “The Forsaken”, describes and foreshadows the woman literally as someone who has been or will be abandoned in their time of need. The word “forsaken” means to be left stranded, cast off, or discarded callously especially when dependent. The woman personifies this in DC Scott's second stanza where he recounts how he children left her in a decrepit state. To begin, Scott first states that her children “Left her alone forever / Without a word of farewell” (64-65).
