Analysis of Approaches The United States is rapidly growing in different racial, ethnic, religious, language, and cultural groups. These diversity groups are increasing the need for multicultural educational initiatives within all schools, including higher education. This essay will examine two of the four approaches to multicultural curriculum reform recommended by Banks (1989). The two approaches are Level I: The Contributions Approach and Level II: The Social Action Approach. Rather than attempt to define multicultural education, these approaches have been broken down into levels, that allow different conceptions in the decision making process when implementing multicultural education program. Students are not able to explore other cultural groups in society; they are only exposed to what is provided to them through the curriculum designed by the teacher in lesson plans. Students are not provided the opportunity to discuss racism, poverty, and oppression in this approach, it is avoided and the focus is more on the success and validation of pulling oneself up from the bottom. As students’ are studying and learning about cultures through the Contributions Approach they are learning about the unique aspect of a character, but not understanding the culture and the character as a whole. Biblical integration uses the trust of God’s word as the foundation to interpret all things. Christian educators fulfill the purpose to train students to think and live like Christ in this world so that they can enter secular areas equipped to withstand atheistic and humanistic worldviews as well as spark change in those around them. It is vital that our children develop a Christian worldview and understand why they believe what they believe. This will help them as they continue their educational path throughout the 21st Century by providing them with the knowledge that they will need to live their faith in a way that honors God and impacts their community and world (Bennie & Van, 2017).
