It’s been over 50 years and yet nothing has changed the fact that women have to work until April 8th to have earned the same amount her male counterpart the year prior. The gender wage gap is quite the topic of discussion. Some don’t believe in it, some struggle to live through it. The first equal pay act was made in 1963, and yet things haven’t changed much. Recently in 2014, President Obama had made some new laws to decrease the gap. One act was supposed to make it so prohibit federal contractors from retaliating against employees that share wage information. Unfortunately, the republican vote in senate declined these acts and shattered the opportunity to fix the wage gap. The wage gap has been a controversial issue because some don’t believe in its existence. On the one hand some argue that, the gap is inaccurate and leaves in factors that could make the results biased. From this perspective, some of the factors to consider would be experience, time off for family or children, and their place of work. On the other hand, however, others argue that the gap is real and is actually widening even in higher paying fields. For example, it has been said that female doctors, lawyers, and judges earn significantly less than their male counterparts. According to this view, the pay gap is widening no matter the factors left in or out because women still earn an average of 77 cents to a man’s dollar. In sum, then, the issue is whether the gap doesn’t exist and therefore can’t be fixed or the gap is accepted as valid and addressed. It is clear that the gender pay gap is something that needs to be addressed and should be treated as a problem to be able to work towards resolving it. A lot if the time people think that women are comparing their job to high paying more labor subjected jobs. "between men and women generally reflect other factors such as interrupting a career to raise children, the types of jobs men and women on average choose, the type of education they have (sociology vs. engineering), etc” (Skoning). In other words, when calculating things like the wage gap there could be many factors making it more biased towards the men because of the majority of jobs they work compared to majority of jobs that women work. For example, if a women were to look at her income from a less labor induced job such as a teacher or social worker and compare it to a higher paying job of a man such as a carpenter or supervisor, then there would obviously be a wage difference. Now include factors of missing work for having children, now it’s an even bigger gap. It may be true that these factor can take a part in the calculations of the wage gap, there is still, however, when comparing wages from all over the world there still seems to be a gap.
