The Godly Characteristics of Bilbo Bilbo has many Godly characteristics in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. He decides to help the dwarves by going on the journey, Bilbo risks his own life to help the dwarves many times, and he gives the Arkenstone to Bard to help his people. Bilbo shows that he is helpful, caring, and selfless on his journey with the dwarves. The first characteristic is that he decides to go on the journey to help the dwarves. Bilbo doesn’t like to go on adventures, because he likes to be comfortable in his little hobbit hole. Gandalf says, “There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself.” Bilbo is scared to go and he thinks he isn’t brave, but Gandalf knows that Bilbo is brave and he can be a hero. He starts to be a hero when he saves the dwarves for the first time. Bilbo has to risk his life to help the dwarves many times in this book. He cares enough to help them when they are imprisoned in the dungeon of the wood elves and when they are captured by the giant spiders. In the wood elves’ dungeon when Bilbo has freed all the dwarves he tells them, “You just follow me! We must all keep together and not risk getting separated. All of us must escape or none, and this is our last chance.” Bilbo could leave them in the dungeon for the rest of their lives, but he decides to stay and free them. Bilbo also shows that they were a team because he says,” All of us must escape or none.” Bilbo is not just brave and caring. He is also selfless. Bilbo gives the Arkenstone to Bard to help his people, when he could keep it for himself. Thorin says, “For the Arkenstone of my father is worth more than a river of gold in itself, and to me it is beyond price. That stone of all treasure I name unto myself, and I will be avenged on anyone who finds it and withholds it.” The stone is obviously very valuable. Bilbo could keep it for himself, but he doesn’t. He gives it to Bard so it can help him and his people bargain with Thorin. Bilbo proves he is selfless and he reveals Godly qualities throughout his journey with the dwarves. Three Godly characteristics that Bilbo shows are that he is helpful, he is caring, and he is also selfless. Bilbo is helpful because he went on the journey with the dwarves even though he doesn’t want to. He risks his life to save the dwarves many times which makes him caring. Bilbo gives the Arkenstone to Bard to help his people instead of keeping it for himself and that makes him selfless. Bilbo proves to everyone that he is a Godly person even though he may not realize it.
