“The best work of literature to represent the American Dream is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It shows us how dreaming can be tainted by reality, and that if you don't compromise, you may suffer.” Azar Nafisi (BrainyQuote). The Great Gatsby is a famous american novel that tells a story about a man, Gatsby, constantly trying to pursue his version of the American Dream. As much as he strives for his dream, the American Dream is an unrealistic expectation that cannot be achieved
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s dream is for things to be like how they were in the past, and get back together with his lover, Daisy. We are first introduced to Gatsby at the end of chapter one when he is standing on his lawn with his arms stretched out towards …show more content…
Having such an unrealistic goal lead to the disappointment of Gatsby’s view of the American Dream. “I have an idea that Gatsby himself didn’t believe it would come, and perhaps he no longer cared. If that was true he must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream” (Fitzgerald 161). This quote explains how Gatsby lived too long with only one single dream, getting Daisy back.Gatsby’s dream was unreasonable and he needed to move on, but he didn't and it resulted in his death. Gatsby’s purpose of life was to get Daisy back, and he did not accomplish that leaving nothing left except to face death. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning—— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past”(Fitzgerald 180). This quote is by far the most significant. It demonstrates how a highly successful man failed to achieve his one goal, the love of Daisy. Gatsby was highly optimistic in the hope that he could restore Daisy’s love for him. His dream was ultimately shattered by Daisy’s rejection. Gatsby, the man who had everything, actually had nothing. Gatsby constantly reached towards the light, but never got close enough to grab

...In the third chapter of The Great Gatsby, it goes into the details of what goes into and what happens at one of Jay’s parties. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes imagery and polysyndeton to illustrate importance and emphasize what is being talked about. At the very start of the excerpt Fitzgerald uses a polysyndeton to describe the start of his parties. “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars”. Instead of just putting this sentence in a list format he uses the polysyndeton to bridge the gap between the things that are being mention.”In the main hall a bar with real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials”. This second quote is putting emphasis...

...in life before they try to achieve it achieve blindly. James Gatz, also known as Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby reflects this quote by deciding from the day he met Daisy Buchanan that he would marry her and love her forever. Through Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle we see how Fitzgerald illustrates his agreement that deciding what you want before you try to achieve it is best. From the first day Gatsby met Daisy, he knew she was the one and he wanted to be with forever. At the time when he met her he was poor and soon to be sent off to war, but he knew when he came back he would become rich...

...My opinion of those accessories was not favorable. They had never troubled me before, but they troubled me now, as vulgar appendages . . . I wished Joe had been rather more genteelly brought up, and then I should have been so too (Dickens 55). This quote articulates that Pip’s feelings about his social class have been altered because of the mockery to Pip’s “coarse hands” and his “common boots”, going so far as to wish he were more “genteelly” raised. Pip no longer feels a sense of belonging to the lower class because of this newfound shame, but due to his common upbringing by Joe, neither is he accepted into the upper class by Miss Havisham and Estella. This quote portrays how failing to feel satisfaction in one’s own social class keeps a person from being included in the social hierarchy. The social system is set up to make the action of changing one’s class extremely difficult, because upper social classes refuse to accept the lower social classes and their lower members into the higher society. Therefore, if a person attempts to improve their social class because of a lack of pride in their social status, this person will find himself in a position of not belonging to any class. Abandoning...

...Conley Howard The Great Gatsby Literary Analysis Notebook Mrs. Marlar/English III Period 6 Howard 1 Literary Element- Symbolism Chapter 1, page 21 Original Quote: “But I didn’t call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unique darkness.”(Fitzgerald 21) Paraphrase with Analysis: Gatsby is being spotted by Nick, the narrator, while he is reaching out across his dock to the green light. (Fitzgerald 21) The green light symbolizes Daisy. Green is also an archetype and the negative associations are death and decay. Green can also foreshadow Gatsby death in the end since he never achieved the “green light” being Daisy who she chose Tom Buchanan in the end. Embedded Quotes in Paraphrase with Analysis: David F. Trask in his book, A Note on Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, states that “Gatsby believed in the green light, the future that year by year recedes before us. Gatsby Research Paper

...Jason Lepeska Lippincott English III GT/AP-4 17 January 2013 Research Paper The Great Gatsby was a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, and has motifs of class separation, the hollowness of the upper class, and the decline of the visions of America. The setting is New York City in the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway moves to New York in hopes of finding a job there. Nick has connections in this town, like his cousin daisy, and her husband, Tom. He moves into a home next to a wealthy Jay Gatsby, an extravagant man who loves throwing ridiculous parties. As the summer progresses, Nick finally gets invited to one of these parties, where he learns Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Nick helps set up Daisy and Gatsby, and they start spending time together. Tom gets angry and ends up driving Gatsby to his unfortunate demise. While a Feminist reading provides insight into the novel, Fitzgerald’s emphasis on the separated classes system and the materialistic beliefs of the upper class demonstrates that a Marxist approach to the novel is of more use. Feminism criticizes the patriarchal language used in novels, and how that reflects the masculinity in the novel (“Feminist Criticism”). Feminism also analyzes how status and positions in the novel relate to the contrasting man and woman. It recognizes more traditional writing, like mailman. Men tend to work towards solutions, while women work towards connecting and feelings (“Feminist Criticism”). It is exemplified in the book...

Literature

...Application of Marxism on The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald Marxist literary critics tend to look for tensions and contradictions within literary works. This is appropriate because Marxism was originally formulated to analyze just such tensions and contradictions within society. Marxist literary critics also see literature as intimately linked to social power, and thus their analysis of literature is linked to larger social questions. Since Marxism is a belief system which can be used to analyze society at the grandest or most detailed level, Marxist literary criticism is ultimately part of a much larger effort to uncover the inner workings of society 1.      Title of the Book – The Great Gatsby:  Gatsby became rich because, most probably Cody – the owner of the yatch, left him money but at the same time he is was committed to earning money at an early stage in his life. And the adjective Great added to the word noun, accounts for Fitzgerald reason why a man could be called a great that is he struggled hard to achieve the love of his life by trying to raise his stature. The word “Great” is added to emphasize the fact that he rose from rags to riches, and this fact should be respected and valued. Nick: “I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people--his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception...

Death of a Salesman

...In what ways does Fitzgerald and Williams present the importance of hopes and dreams? Both F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ and Arthur Miller’s ‘A Death of a Salesman’ focus their main ideas on the importance of hopes and dreams. Death of a Salesman, produced in 1949, has become a classic of modern American theatre. It is a story of an average salesman with a dream of being rich and well-liked. Willy believes whole heartedly in what he considers the promise of the American Dream. In the 1940’s The American Dream was as simple as it gets, to have a perfect, successful life with a common nuclear family, a house in the suburbs, a nice car and a life without conflict or family strife. ‘The Great Gatsby’ is a highly symbolic reflection on 1920’s America as a whole, in particular the disappearance of the American Dream in an era of material excess. On the surface, ‘The Great Gatsby’ is a story of the eternal love between a man and a woman. However, in reality the main theme of the novel involves a much larger, less romantic outlook. The 1920’s was an era of decayed social and moral values, which means that the idea of The American Dream was different to what it is now. When World War 1 ended in 1918, the generation of young Americans who fought the war became intensely disillusioned. The rise of the stock market in the aftermath of the war led to a sudden increase in the national wealth and a new found materialism, leading the younger generation to pursue a life of extravagance...

Gatsby’s significance in the text makes a reader’s analysis of him incredibly important to understanding the text. The Great Gatsby

...Analysis of “Materialistic Perception” in F. Scot Fitzgerald Using Marxist Literary Criticism Chapter I 1.1 Introduction The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. 1.2 State of Problem The Great Gatsby provides a critical social history of America during the Roaring Twenties within its narrative. That era, known for unprecedented economic prosperity, the evolution of jazz music, flapper culture, and bootlegging and other economy struggle that was the result of the materialism and capitalism damaging on social behavior, led to the widespread social distress. 1.3 Theoretical Framework Using literary criticism to interpret what is the ideal life of America in 19th century and what is the dream of American people after World War I. as a Marxist interpretation of the novel makes especially clear, reveals its dark underbelly instead. Through its unflattering characterization of those at the top of the...
