Both Like Water for Chocolate and The House of Spirits are novels that have plots that contain two male characters extremely significant to the development of the story. Both the male characters are caught in romantic conflicts which create and continue the lives of these as well as the life of other characters, therefore, positioning these characters in a level of importance more significant than many of the other involving characters. In Like Water for Chocolate the character of Pedro Muzquiz is of extreme relevance to the novel of Laura Esquivel. Pedro is initially presented to the readers as a man who is madly in love with Tita, the youngest daughter of Mama Elena, who due to family tradition is unable to marry Pedro because she now has to dedicate her life to taking care of her mother until her respective death. In a similar way, Esteban Trueba in The House of Spirits is the male protagonist, whose life is analyzed throughout the duration of the novel, ending after his death. Esteban, in a similar way to Pedro, is forbidden to marry his loved one Rosa, who due to political motives, is accidentally murdered after drinking venom that is initially meant for her father. Both these characters have strong feelings towards their loved ones and at a certain point in the novel are at a significant physical distance. In Esteban’s case, Rosa is at the del Valle’s house while he is working in the mines “and trusting that someday he would strike a marvelous seam of gold that would allow him to become a rich man overnight and return to lead Rosa by the arm to the altar”, saving all his money so that one day he will be able to support his matrimonial life with Rosa. The same thing happens to Pedro Muzquiz, who is also pushed apart from his loved one, Tita, due to being forced by his wife Rosaura, Tita’s sister, to move to Texas because she is threatened by the relationship between Tita and Pedro – a forbidden love. In a detailed analysis it is comprehended how Pedro as well as Esteban are two characters with similar traits. Another resemblance between both these characters is that due to their romantic destiny, they did not marry the women whom their hearts initially choose. Pedro marries Rosaura, Tita’s sister, as a way to maintain proximity with his true love that cannot marry him due to traditional motives her family has as a priority to maintain. Esteban also does not marry with “Rosa the Beautiful” known for her “strange beauty [of] a disturbing quality”, since she dies from being poisoned, which Esteban could not believe because “the only thought that had never crossed [his] mind was that Rosa could be mortal”. After years in Trés Marias, Esteban returns to ask for the hand of Rosa’s little sister, Clara. This means that both these characters not only did not marry the women who initially spark their love, but they also marry the sisters of these.
Both Pedro and Esteban like to have control over what they love and/or what is theirs by right. Despite the fact that Pedro creates a family with the sister of his loved one, he believes he has the right to control what Tita does or does not do, creating then in Pedro, a hypocrite as when he marries Rosaura, Tita does not try to dissuade him. This happens when Tita decides to marry John Brown, who plays an enormous role in Tita’s recovery, who after Pedro’s abandonment seems to become insane. When Pedro returns from Texas with Rosaura because of the marriage between Tita and John Brown, Pedro creates in Tita an uncertainty which he has no right to, since in the past he did what he thought was right and did not even ask Tita for her opinion. It can be doubted that Pedro has different intentions than he states, as he may have married Rosaura just to control Tita and not just to be closer to her. This happening in the novel of Laura Esquivel is very similar to Isabel Allende’s, who creates Esteban’s character as a resentful man who due to his wife’s death, turns into a different man, in this case, a severe, unfair and implacable man. Esteban, just like Pedro, likes to have control over everything possible. Furthermore, his conservative politics demonstrate how he believes in hierarchy of workers; putting himself on the top of this work chain. Esteban not only has an autocratic control over the workers in Trés Marías, but as well over his family. As an example of this, there is Blanca, daughter of Esteban, who has an affair with Pedro Tercero Garcia. This boy has secret meetings with Blanca, and when these forbidden meetings are uncovered by Esteban, he hunts Pedro Tercero Garcia with all his strengths and powers; when he finally finds him, he attacks him with an axe, and thanks to Pedro’s instincts, “he raised his arms to stop the axe” which “sliced off three fingers of his right hand”. After analyzing the resemblances between these two essential characters to the plot of each of the novels, in order to be able to compare the success of these, it is also necessary to verify what makes each character distinct from the other. In spite of all the resemblances both these characters possess, Esteban and Pedro also differ in various aspects. One of these aspects are the reasons of their marriages. In Pedro’s case, he chooses to marry Rosaura as a way to allow Tita and himself to maintain proximity as when he whispers in Tita’s ear “‘through this marriage I have gained what I really wanted: the chance to be near you, the woman I love…’”, as Tita is not able to have any kind of matrimonial compromise as long as her mother is alive, because of the tradition of having to care for her mother until her death. However, Esteban does not marry Clara to maintain proximity to Rosa because this would be impossible as Rosa died at the time in which Esteban asked for the hand of the youngest daughter of the Severo del Valle. It is possible to argue that Esteban marries Clara because this would be a way of maintaining proximity to Rosa even if it is by the simple fact that his wife is the sister of the initial owner and dominator of his heart. Esteban marries Clara years after Rosa’s death and does not marry Rosa because of her murder. Between Esteban and Pedro there also is a significant difference which distinguishes themselves in their personalities. Pedro is a subject much more calm and pacific than Esteban, who in the elapse of the story The House of the Spirits, proceeds to turn into a man even more vengeful, hateful and grumpy – later on giving him the title of a tyrant in Trés Marías. As proof towards this, there is the fact that Pedro in the whole of the novel, before all his difficulties, never utilizes his aggressiveness as a way to achieve his goals. Pedro, before the impossibility of uniting with Tita, assumes an attitude of acceptance by not forcing the situation. Whereas if it were to involve Esteban, takes an attitude of nonconformity as he takes instance where Clara provokes him, mentioning to him all the rapes he commits to so many girls in Trés Marías, making Esteban violently smack Clara. This contrast between the two characters is evident, but, may be discussed this way because Esteban is the protagonist of the story, while Pedro is just a mere important character in the novel, Like Water for Chocolate. Being the protagonist, all the details of his person are illustrated during the course of the narrative, something that Pedro is not subject to. An example of this is when Pedro moves to Texas, the readers know very little of what really goes on in his life with Rosaura; maintaining the anonymity about certain aspects of his life that could be significant to a description of more variety in terms of his aggressive facet – which may or not exist. This is the difference between himself and Esteban who cannot run away from the critics of the public in relation to his hostile attitude. In both these characters there are several similar and different factors when it comes to their attitudes and behaviors that are extremely significant to the comprehension of the novels. But, the truth is, that without both these men the respective stories would not be the same, as the two of them have a fundamental importance to the actions in both novels.

Cross Culture

...cultures is the place of argument and change. Today, Australia is also one of the countries that attract contemporary travelers to visit either for working, studying and pleasure. This trend encourages not only the growth of economy but the improvement for tourism, hospitality and events as well. I would like to share some of my personal experiences of Australian culture since I first came to Sydney for studying advanced diploma 3 years ago. As a Vietnamese student, when I come to Sydney, this multi culture country is totally different from Vietnam. I have been living there for about 3 years, I realize that Australian people also known as Aussies are very friendly, polite and they are speaking English as their first language. The first thing I was shocked is the fact that some teenagers use 2 fingers to make “V” symbol with their tongue but it is not like “Victory” like in Vietnam or United States, it is a really bad meaning in sexual way. In Vietnam, when someone invites you to go out for dining, it means they will pay for you all or men pay for women. But in Sydney, people just pay for their own food or drink. It is a very independent way since they are educated to be like that at very early age. In Thanks Giving, Christmas or New Year public holidays, Aussies celebrate warm parties at home with a lot of food and beverage but in Vietnam, people tend to go...

Scotch Blended

...the beer making process; an extra step is involved by turning the starch in the grain to convert to sugar by adding malt. Malt contains an enzyme called diastase which will change the starch to sugar. The malt, grain and hot water is converted into mash and then fermented by adding yeast. After distilling, it is stored in barrels (usually oak) for at least two years. This adds a distinct aroma and flavor. In Scotch whisky, Scotland has a law to require scotch whiskey to be in barrels for a minimum of three years. Blended Scotch whisky is a blend of one or more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies and Blended Grain Scotch Whiskey is a blend of single grain Scotch whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery. Personal Narrative Analysis

...I’m twelve years old and in sixth grade. I am not going to tell you what I look like, because I don’t have enough time. As I mentioned, I have this weird power. You are probably thinking, Why would this not bring good? Well, this is why I am writing to you all. Let me tell you some of my wishes. One of my wishes was that my older siblings disappeared. Another one was I wished I had younger siblings. Those times, I only got sent to my room, but this time was not going to be like that. It was a rainy day. I was reading my favourite book in the Percy Jackson series. I had this weird idea to wish that all the Percy Jackson characters came to life; that is where I made my mistake. So I wished all the characters were real. When I wished that, it also meant the monsters in Percy Jackson lived. Worst and best wish ever! For a while, I didn’t know the monsters existed, until they were at my front door. At that moment, I told myself, “How stupid am I? Monsters are characters too!” My parents looked directly at me when they saw the monsters. They said, “What did you do this time? And why did you wish up mythical creatures?” My parents had to call the police, because the monsters were ripping apart my house. The police didn’t know what to do about it. I totally forgot demigods were in my house that could kill the...

Switzerland

...small size, it seems everyone has an opinion about what life is like in Switzerland. For some the mountainous country is a beautiful, pristine paradise. For others it’s uptight, conservative and downright boring.   Switzerland is most famous for its mountains, cheese, chocolate, cows, and watches. Of course these things are part of everyday life: check out the mouth-watering display of chocolate bars at any grocery store. But the Swiss and their country are far more complex.   The biggest challenge is pinning down who exactly typifies the average Swiss: there are four different cultures and languages. Some 64 per cent of Swiss speak German. (They actually use Swiss German dialects when chatting and High German for writing). About 20 per cent speak French, seven per cent speak Italian, and less than one per cent speak Romansh.   Only by living here does one learn the customs and etiquette that make the country so much more than its stereotypical image.   The Swiss, for example, pursue a policy of neutrality but also have a large army to defend the country. It’s not unusual to phone up a business acquaintance and find they have left for military service for a few weeks.   And while the Swiss love their rules and order, you still find places where chaos reigns. Try figuring out when to cross the road at the crosswalks known here as “zebra stripes”, as the cars ignore the pedestrians and fly by.   In the spirit of trying to get to know the Swiss better, here’s a cultural...

Magical Realism

...Magical Realism Granville Scott Nelson Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Abstract Magical realism is a Latin American genre in which the author takes an ordinary storyline and inserts an unnatural character or sense of being. This paper will show the difference between magical realism and fantasy or science fiction. Magical Realism From my reading I now understand that magical realism is adding an unrealistic feature or character to an otherwise ordinary story. Magic realism is a term used to describe a mingling of the mundane with the fantastic. “Magical realism is not speculative and does not conduct thought experiments. Instead, it tells its stories from the perspective of people who live in our world and experience a different reality from the one we call objective.” (Rogers, 2002) If an author is telling a familiar story and he adds a twist such as a winged horse or an individual who has been alive for two hundred years, that is an example of magical realism. The difference in magical realism and fantasy is that the story is very natural and true with a surreal object and fantasy is just that, fantasy. The term is best described by Baker in her 1997 writing: While realism itself is a chronically unstable term, realist writing is usually understood to be that which draws on a set of narrative conventions designed to create the illusion that the story on the page is real or true and corresponds in some direct way to the ordinary world of day-to-day life...

A Year Abroad

...What exactly can encapsulate how a year in Cambridge has been like? What choice of words, what photos, what specific memories would suffice to capture the whirlwind of emotions, the myriad of new experiences? Nothing really seems to come close, but here’s a shot at it. Cook-outs – One of the first few things that you’ll start missing when overseas would definitely be the food; your humble hokkein mee, chye tao kueh, rojak, laksa… you name it, we’ll crave it. The fact that the only photos that Singaporeans seem capable of posting on Facebook are that of food certainly doesn’t make things easier. So what does one do then? LEARN HOW TO COOK. This was no mean feat for me especially, as someone who didn’t know how to cook an omelette without charring. The learning curve may be steep but you’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll learn and also how high your tolerance for substandard food becomes when you’ve misjudged the time to let your noodles boil and the amount of salt to add for the 912695th time. Not to worry also, CUMSA is overrun by excellent individuals who are so well-rounded that they can not only finish all their supervision work, attend formals every night and generally save the world, but they can cook. So when you’re tired of eating over-salted soggy noodles, all you need to do is wrangle an invitation to dinner. Oh the delicacies that they can whip up, but more importantly the glorious company and bonds forged over dinner. Food really is one of the ties that bind Singaporeans...

Tourism of Switzerland

...Project About: “ Travel And Tourism of Switzerland” Flag: It may be hard to believe but the famous white cross on a red background has only been the national flag of Switzerland since the 19th century. The origins of the flag, though, date back to 1339 and the historic Battle of Laupen, when Confederate soldiers began using the white cross as their field sign. History: Switzerland evolved over many centuries from a loose alliance of small self-governing towns and states, beginning with the confederation of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden in 1291, to a fully-fledged federal state of 26 cantons. Despite periods of political, social and religious unrest, unity prevailed in the Old Swiss Confederacy. However, the French invasion of 1798 was to be a turning point in the country’s history, ushering in the first of several changes in government – the short-lived Helvetic Republic – that would continue until 1848. The birth of modern-day Switzerland was accompanied by the creation of a federal constitution that laid the permanent foundations for national cohesion and the pursuit of the common good, while upholding the country’s cultural and linguistic diversity Much of Switzerland’s landscape is covered by mountains – apparently inhospitable terrain for human habitation. And yet the routes across the Alpine and Jura mountain passes have brought in people and goods since prehistoric times. The Swiss Plateau, which stretches from Lake Geneva...
