Communication and emotional intelligence are ability needed in order to succeed in leadership and management. As the field of healthcare changes, Timmins (2011)explains that communication has become a fundamental element of care at every level of nursing practice. Studies have shown that managers spent 70 to 90 percent of their time in communicating with their teams and others at the workplace. According to Mike Myatt (2012), Effective communication is an essential component of professional success, “whether it is at the interpersonal, intergroup, intragroup, organizational, or external level”. Examination of great leaders shows that It is simply impossible to become a great leader without being a great communication.

The ability of great leaders to develop a keen external awareness that separates the truly great communicators from those who muddle through their interactions with others is an also a great example of Emotional intelligence (EI). EI is considered by many to be a necessary ability for effective leadership (Lucas et.al, 2008). The study The impact of emotionally intelligent leadership on staff nurse empowerment: the moderating effect on span of control by Lucas et.al(2008) tested a model of nursing perception using a descriptive survey of over 200 hundred nurses to discover that higher EI nurse managers did not always translate to successful nurse leaders. Conflict can cause tension in the workplace and often produces poor professional outcomes(Lipcamon, 2014). Nursing leaders and managers spend between 25 and 40 percent of their time dealing with conflict, according to various surveys and estimates. Conflict is present in all aspect of human lives but becomes a challenge when emotions, belief, and acts of violence are interjected it in.
