The Influence my Grandfather had on my Career Field, Criminal Justice

Have you ever lost someone that was so important to you, that you just didn’t really know where your life would go from there? Well I lost my best friend, my Grandfather. He and I did absolutely everything together, and he is the reason why I’m studying Criminal Justice. My Grandfather was a police officer for fifty-two years. And he always told me to strive for my dreams, and never let anyone or anything stop me or hold me back.
Before he passed away, he told me that he knew I was sad and I didn’t want to lose him. So he Proceeded to tell me how strong, smart, and determined I was. Then asked me what I truly wanted to do with my life and my future. So I told him that I wanted to follow in his footsteps. He smiled at me and said “I love you Ang, and if that is what you truly want to do, I will be with you, and guide you through your endeavors.”
After he passed away, I slipped into a depressed state, and I missed a lot of school. Then one day, I woke up and it felt like a burst of confidence swept over me. I knew at that moment, it was my Grandfather telling me not to worry about him anymore, that he was in a better place where he didn’t suffer or hurt anymore. So I started going back to school, and graduated High School with a 3.6 GPA because I knew I could do and be anything in this world, because I had my Guardian Angel looking over me from Heaven.
When I first started at Sinclair, I was weary at first. I didn’t really know what to expect, so I went to his Grave site and talked about not being sure if I wanted all the stress of school just to be a Police Officer. And I felt a warm touch on my shoulder, and I truly realized that he wouldn’t be upset if I didn’t do this. His favorite thing to say was “fuck a duck!” (Long story short, I should say).
So, I finally came back to Sinclair and started my spring semester. I love Criminal Justice more than a person should, but that’s only because the reason why I’m doing this is so near and dear to my heart. I know it’s not going to be an easy road. But I don’t want easy, I want possible. And I believe that absolutely anything is possible if you have people who believe in you, and if you believe in yourself. I cannot wait to become a Police Officer, because the day I graduate from the Police Academy, it’s going to pour down rain. And I will stand in the pouring rain with the biggest smile on my face, because I know that’s my Grandfather’s way of telling me how proud he is of me.
I plan to be the fairest, most straight forward, honest police officer that I can possibly be. I’m going to be fair, because I was raised to always be fair in anything and everything that I do. I’m going to be straight forward because I don’t see the point in beating around the bush just to get to one conclusion. And I’m going to continue to be completely honest with everyone that I come into contact with, because everyone deserves honesty in their lives. But most of all, I’m going to be the best person that I can possibly be in my Career Field. Anything less would make all of my struggles and efforts pointless. Not all Police Officers are bad people, just thought I’d throw that little bit in there.
My Grandfather was the only man that I knew that could move mountains to get to what he was wanting to achieve. He never gave up, and he never got discouraged in anything that he attempted. He was truly the strongest man I have ever known, that has had such an impact of my life. Yes, I miss him dearly and wish that he was still here with me, but I know that while I’m going through my endeavors, that he will be guarding me from the Heaven’s. I just hope that I don’t disappoint him in any way. I only want to make him proud, to make myself proud. I want him to know that he is the reason why I wake up every morning at 6 AM and the reason why I don’t get upset about it. But I’m sure he is well aware that I am doing this for him because when I talk to him, I tell him every time how I hope he’s proud of the person that I am becoming. Even though I can’t hear him talking back to me, I know that he can hear me, and that he is so very proud that I finally made up my mind to follow in his footsteps.

Narrative

... 2014 4 December 2015 The Influence of My Grandfather My Grandfather’s presence and influence have had an enormous impact on my life. I always remember as a young boy being raised on a farm by my Grandparents. My grandfather was very intelligent and hardworking man. I watched him work and provide for our very large family without ever complaining about being the man. I would at times consciously imitate him. There were other times I that would unconsciously imitate him. I have always realized the importance of my grandfather’s presence in my life, but it was not until I became an adult that I would gain a fuller appreciation of his impact on my life. I know that his influence has helped to guide my decision-making on the most important issues that I have made and help me to understand the consequences of making the wrong decisions. My grandfather helped me to realize so many lessons on what it takes to be a real man, especially on facts around responsibility of managing money, personal sacrifices and the joy and fulfillments of being a real man. My grandfather taught me an important lesson about how to be responsible with my money. He had a saying that stays with me today and I have passed this on to my children. His saying was regarding gambling. He said that you should not gamble unless you are willing to be able to throw that amount of money or thing out of the window without it affecting you or your family in a negative way. I had heard him say this a thousand...

Management

...Gender’s Influence It is very interesting just how sex and gender can shape one’s life. Before this class, I didn’t even understand the difference between sex and gender. Frankly, I was not even aware that there was a difference. To completely understand how sex and gender mold our behavior, it is imperative that we understand what each of these terms refers to. Sex is our biological makeup, this serves to categorize us into two distinct groups, males and females. Gender, on the other hand, refers to traits that make us masculine or feminine. So how do the traits associated with gender mold our behavior in society? I would like to draw upon personal experience in order to answer this question. I was raised in a single parent household by my mother. As long as I can remember, she was my primary caretaker. In my younger years, my main male influences were my grandfather and my great grandfather. One a construction worker and other, a retired World War II and Korean War veteran. The soldier and the construction worker, two things that defined masculinity to me at a very young age. The bravery associated with a soldier and the ruggedness of a construction worker are still things that are primarily associated with masculinity today. My views have somewhat changed though, I now know that there are female soldiers, and there are female construction workers. This has not changed the respect that I have for the men that my forefathers were, only the idea of masculinity that went...

Leadership

...objectives. My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. I have been blessed to have a role model like my grandfather, Anthony Modzelewski. A leader motivates others to action, which is exactly what my grandfather does on a daily basis. He constantly urges me to do my best so that I succeed in whatever I am doing. Leadership is not only reflected in someone’s performance, but in accomplishments. Whether in personal, community, or business matters, a leader should always strive to achieve their goals. Whether they be physically in the world or spiritually, a leader is someone a person can look up to for encouragement and motivation. We all look up to someone in one way in one way or another as a sense of comfort. Imagine a man coming to a new country halfway across the world with his wife to start a new life with his new family. Role models are a great help in leadership situations. Leadership role models are people who are already in a position of authority that you look up to and hope to be like. Being a leader takes courage and being a role model encourages the person to continue persevering towards bigger and better things. My grandfather...

What Has Made Me Who I Am

...Has Made Me Who I Am Our text tells us “You are the product of the way you were raised, as well as your genetics. And if you are a parent, your children will be the product of how you raise them” (Witt & Mossler, 2010, p. 11). Looking back at my life, I know that is true. There are many things in my life that have molded me to be the person that I am today. Some of these experiences have been positive, and some have been negative. Either way, they are all a part of what has made me who I am. I came from a broken home. My parents, who to this day hate each other, were divorced when I was just two years old. I was an only child to my mother and the youngest of three to my father, who had previously been married. Everyone tells me that I was the apple of my mother’s eye. I personally do not believe this, because for as long as I can remember, she was always busy with work and her own life, leaving little or no time for me. My father, made it very clear at a young age that he really was not interested in playing dad to a small child. My half sister and brother are much older than I am, so they were already at an age that they did not need this. Because of this, I spent most of my time with my paternal grandparents. They did everything for me, and with me. They were two of the most amazing people that I have ever met in my life. As a school aged child, I played soccer and basketball on the town leagues. Neither my mother nor my father ever saw a game. My step-father...

Inter Generational Interview

...individuals. Whether the change is a result of advancing technology, social climate, or foreign influence there is little chance of preventing the effect it will have on society. It is difficult to argue that we have not seen a paradigm shift in social attitudes from generation to generation, and one could easily point to this the being the reason that we as a society have progressed so quickly over the last 50 years. Until conducting these interviews I was not aware of the immense amount of progress, and in some cases amount of deterioration, that we as a society have caused. It is obvious in the way that human beings have treated things like environmental sustainability, civic engagement and social justice over this time and this paper will be examining how these ideas have are different to generation. While interviewing my grandfather I was able to gather lots of information about not just the time he lived in, but also some information about himself that I had not previously known. He started off the interview by telling me about his childhood. My grandfather was born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1940 and as many know this was the year that Germany began its occupation of the Netherlands. He grew up in a rural area and spoke about how little food him and his family had due to the conflict happening in his home country. When I asked my Grandfather about his childhood he told me there was little to be...

Ethic

...process begins at childhood. The people that a person comes into contact with, influences inside the home such as parents, siblings, and neighbors. As one grows older and ventures out into the world outside the home teachers, friends and even enemies all help to shape one’s value system. Any type of communication with anyone that we come in contact with has the potential to shape our value system or our ethics structure. Good. Ethics Development One’s beliefs, values or ethics begin forming at an early age and continues throughout one’s life. Most often, those values learned early on are the ones that stay with you in some form or another throughout one’s life. My development started at an early age. I grew up in a very close community. My neighborhood was an extension of my family. Family togetherness, education and sports were very influential aspects that helped shape my ethics structure and continue to guide my actions to this day. Over time, my various experiences have continued to help evolve and shape my value structure. Both positive and negative experiences have played a large role in my value system. Good. Defining Ethics What are ethics? Ethics are the principles, norms, and standards of conduct governing an individual or organization.” (Treviño & Nelson, 2007, p. 13) In my opinion ethics and values are almost interchangeable. My values help to define my ethics structure. To me both things have a lot to do with what I believe to be right and wrong....

Somaly Mam

...herself in an extremely impoverished village of Cambodia. The lack of family support and parental protection had a significant effect on her development as a young girl. She grew up lonely and without any positive guidance which made her extremely vulnerable to trafficking. In addition to lacking any family support or financial assistance, Somaly suffered the torment of racism throughout her entire childhood and early teens. This had a profound impact on her self-perception and made her feel less human than her peers. These root cause of trafficking certainly played a central role in the abuses that took place in Somaly’s childhood. When she was about nine or ten, it is assumed that the couple who looked after her sold her to a man whom she referred to as grandfather. This was her first of many experiences of being traded as a commodity between men who lacked even a hint of moral fiber. Grandfather treated Somaly as a sex slave who existed solely to pleasure and provide for him. He even went as far as to sell her virginity to a merchant in order to settle his debt. From here, grandfather continued the cycle of abuse by selling Somaly into marriage at the age of 13. While Somaly hated grandfather with a deep distain, marriage did not improve her situation. Her husband continually raped and beat her just as grandfather had. It was around this time that Somaly had met a family which she would grow to consider her own. These were the first people to care for her and treat...

Lololololol

...some influence us and completely change the way we think and our personal perspective of life, positively or negetively. The people who influence us can consist of a variety of people, whether they are relatives, or teachers, or friends, or famous people that we may/may not even have met before. Thus, I shall start with the introduction of the one and only person who has greatly influenced me in life and was an inspiration to me: that person was my grandfather Dennis. Grandpa Dennis was my maternal grandfather who sadly departed shortly after my eleventh birthday after enduring a five year battle with prostate cancer. His death was a devastating blow to me as I felt he was taken away from me too soon in my life. Despite that, I never forgot the every lesson and every single word of advice he gave me in my younger years before his departure. He was, to me, the wisest and most ingenious man I ever knew, and was incredibly present in my childhood life. Grandpa Dennis always worked hard, he had owned a chain of restaurants (which have now been passed to my uncles), played in the share market and successfully raised five children with his wife (my grandmother). I was born in a mild-mannered, middle-class family. My parents were hardworkers who worked five days a week, eight hours a day to make ends meet; and most importantly, to provide me and my siblings a condusive and comfortable life to live in. While they were away, guess who was the father figure that loomed around me during...

My Life

...Jackson Mia Comm.120 Tues. Thurs. 9:30 My LIfe I feel I am a very strong will individual and an independent young lady. I know who I am, so I am not trying to be someone I am not. I am very comfortable with the person I am today and don’t plan on change myself unless “I” want to. I am very cautious about the people I allow to get to know me. And when I truly care about someone you can tell. I may seem selfish but I love to do for others. Of course I have flaws like every once but I just except mines. Soccer: I have been playing soccer since I was five years old and it has always come very easy to me. In high school if you were to say, “ Mia Jackson, ya know the black girl, varsity soccer, since freshman year,” then people would know who you were talking about. Soccer is something that helps defines the person I am today. I never noticed how important soccer was to me until about two years ago, when I had torn my ACL which prevented me from participating in soccer for year. I remember holding back my tears as the doctor told me I could not play and had to get surgery, than on top of that recover time was close to a year. Over the summer this year I had to bust my ass to get back into shape because I felt I had a title to live up to. I would have to say I am now playing better than ever before out of my fourteen years of soccer. Most because I play every game like it’s my last and don’t take my talent for granted cause a simple injury can happen in a matter of seconds. High...

This really grabbed my attention, as currently I want to be a European history professor. Art and Music History

...common. As a child, my first exposure to art was in the form of music. Growing up in Western Kentucky, bluegrass played a large part of my life. My grandfather taught me to play the banjo and guitar starting at the age of 4. I first experienced painting in elementary school beginning in the 1st grade. Cinema has always been a part of my life, but I had not considered it art until I was able to properly define it. I experienced dance in high school while taking an elective ballroom dancing course for a semester. I have experienced theater, but not enough to form an opinion about it. Lastly, sculpture had a small influence when I briefly experimented with it in high school art classes. The most valuable and influential form of art to myself is music. Music has always been a large part of my life. In total, I play 5 instruments. Guitar is the primary instrument I choose to play. My grandfather taught me as a child and I have continued to play every day for many years. I began to perform at a young age in churches and community functions. Later, in high school I started a band with a few other local musicians and we played together for about 4 years. Currently I am in a band composed of all military members; we often play in different small venues in Las Vegas, Nevada. Without music, I would not fell like a complete person. It has played such a huge role in my upbrining. Cinema is the next most important form that influences me. Cinema has also played a large role in my life. I have a...

The four players get four seats called ‘khal’ or ‘dau’ respectively which are named as teeya (three), chauka (four), panja (five) and chakka (six). I don’t want to explain all about it. He was walking back home when he found somebody from his own village and ask for him help. The guy from the same village gave him 20 rupees(2 cents) which were enough for him to play one hand. Reasearch Paper

...American Perspective On The Vietnam War My grandfather is a Vietnam War veteran. That alone drove me toward choosing this topic for this research paper. A few months ago, my grandfather had let me read his manuscript that he wrote when he had gotten home from his twelve year service for the United States. This novel he wrote is increasing my interest in the Vietnam War each page I turn. People often ask me whenever we’re talking about the war, which side I’m positioned on. I say that we shouldn’t have “helped” in the war. Because in my opinion, we could have done better for the country if we would have kept our noses out if the excitement but as for people like my grandfather, he opposes that perspective. I do have a firm grip on both paradigms of the war but as you can tell, I want a world with no war possible but honestly, who doesn’t? I guess you can call me a dreamer. But I know I’m not the only one. I thank John Lennon and my Mother for that lesson. I love my mother and my grandfather just as much. But, like I said, because of that, I know and understand two, very different opinions or viewpoints of the Vietnam War. My Mom is somewhat a flower child from when she was just a teenager. That all began because she never really got along with my Grandfather all that well. My Grandfather (my mom’s step dad) was the stereotypical; stern but fair, strict yet loving, harsh yet respectful step-father. Due to that reason my Mom was a rebel to the degree of a flour child. She is always...
