The LACK of Do-It-Yourself

People make and repair their own designs for hundreds of years. This concept of making your own things is known as Do-It-Yourself (DIY). Do-It-Yourself contains aspects of building, repairing and modifying things without the help of a paid professional. A subculture, or better-said counterculture, from the 1970s that makes use of DIY is punk. Punk sets itself off against society and wants to be focussed on the capacity of an individual through self-expression. DIY within the punk subculture can be seen as a rejection of the need to purchase items or use existing systems or processes that would foster dependence on established societal structures. It needs to be stated that punk deliberately chose to use DIY. Nowadays punk slowly fades away out of society. However DIY is still actively used. A company that propagates DIY is IKEA. Nevertheless, IKEA is as Do-It-Yourself as a supermarket where you can take your products from the shelves. Thus, IKEA abuses the concept of DIY as intended by the punk movement. These different examples of DIY show how widely the interest in this topic varies over time and space. In the search for what makes DIY so widely applied, DIY will be used as the central common feature in the analysis and comparison between values and goals of the subculture of punk and the multinational store IKEA. This article argues that IKEA has nothing in common with DIY and therefore it gets mistreated by IKEA. A comparison will be made between DIY as propagated by IKEA and DIY as used by the punk movement, which will clarify the statement made earlier.

The 1960s and 1970s were the decades where a variety of subcultures arrived in Western society, namely in the United States and the United Kingdom. One of these subcultures was the punk subculture. Punk is known for their belief in individual freedom. This subculture

...thing that Rawlinson would have to consider for driving sales would be the price of the product. Although the article does not include any bulk or discounted prices, Rawlinson often stated in the article that discounting the price of their products was not something they cared to do. What I find interesting about the Quartz products is that the cost to produce the product is very comparable (€175 - €230) to the other products that they were currently making. Granted there was an increase from the money spent on R&D, but his perception of innovation and quality seems like it is solely tied to money. For example, if you compare Aqualisa’s mixer shower valve product, the Aquavalve 609 with the Quartz line, you will see that for the non-DIY, it was actually cheaper to purchase the Quartz product and have it installed. So while the Aquavalve is a hot seller, the cost of installation (and booster pump if needed)...

How Home Depot Could Enter Indian Markets

...into India. We believe that Home Depot can gain great value from entering India following our strategy. Introduction and Background Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus. They originally started with two stores in the Atlanta area with about 60,000 square feet each. These stores dwarfed the competition in not only size but also in product offering and availability. They started off offering over 25,000 different SKU’s to customers in everything from power tools to simple easy to use items such as tape and glue (Home Depot). The goal was, as a company, to target and create a market for the “Do it Yourself” or “DIY” market. Until the arrival of Home Depot there was such a market but only local mom and pop shops competed. Home Depot provided a place where they could provide a one-stop shop for DIY and could also provide the “know-how” necessary to complete these home projects. Home Depot associates undergo rigorous training and education in their perspective departments in order to provide the best customer service possible (Home Depot). Home Depot was an overnight success and in 1981 went public on NASDAQ then subsequently moved to the NYSE in 1984. Home Depot was the fastest growing US retailer at the time opening up its 100th...

We have seen that their direct model approach is both strength and a weakness of Dell and so it’s not really a strong strategy that can give them a competitive advantage. Dell’s customer...

Aqualisa Case Study

...the MD of Aqualisa, needs to rethink the Marketing strategy, in order to generate sales momentum and quickly turn around the situation, assuring that the 5,8 Million Pounds spent on the development of Quartz were not in vain. 2. Situation Analysis: Aqualisa is a Shower system manufacturer that operates in the UK market, being generally recognized as a strong brand. Consumers in this market generally fall in one of the three following price segments: Value, Standard and Premium. On the value segment, customers are mainly concerned about price and ease of installation. They don’t give much importance either to style or shower quality experience. Mainly, the products on this segment are electric showers and they are distributed through DIY mass-market outlets, with discounted prices. The retail price represents the total cost incurred by the buyers. Aqualisa has nearly 17% market share (units) on this segment (Appendix C), mainly through their Gainsborough Brand. On the standard and Premium segments, customers tend to value both the shower experience and the style. They prefer mixer and power showers, which are mainly available through showrooms and trade-shops. Prices are higher on these segments, and installation usually requires a professional plumber that takes approximately 2 days to perform the work. Obviously, this adds to the total cost of the customer. Assuming that plumbers charge in average € 60,00 per hour (text says between 40 and 80), and the work is done...

Fortune 500 Companies Nose-Dive in the Chinese Market

...Fortune 500 Companies Nose-Dive in the Chinese Market Candice Tabb International Business MGMT 338 5 December 2014 Duane A. Beaudoin Abstract Fortune 500 companies Home Depot, BestBuy, and Mantel have all failed in the Chinese market. External forces such as competitors and sociocultural effect the companies’ ability to overturn a profit resulting in a complete withdraw. The unwillingness to adapt and conform to consumers and the lack of preparation on all three companies serves as a lessons learned and displays the true setback of standardizing a product vs. adapt or formulate a new. Fortune 500 Companies Nose-Dive in the Chinese Market China’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and its economy have changed dramatically since the 1980’s. Revolution was widely due to the reform era lead by Deng Xiaoping. During the early 1980’s FDI was restricted to a small number of markets in certain regions. FDI policies evolved with time in the mid 1990’s and in the millennium, government policies relaxed and unified with domestic companies. Foreign companies are enticed into the Chinese market by its rising gross domestic product (GDP), favorable foreign exchange regulations, licensing requirements, tariffs, and taxes (Hale & Long, 2012, p. 2) Many U.S born businesses hop on the bandwagon in globalizing in economically stable countries.
