Tuskegee syphilis experiment (also known as the Tuskegee syphilis experiment) was an infamous clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee Alabama by the U.S. Public Health Service to study the natural progression of untreated syphilis in poor, rural black man who thought they were receiving free health care from the U.S. government. Investigators enrolled 600 impoverished African-American sharecroppers from Macon County. For participating in the study, the men were given free medical care, meals, and free burial insurance. They were never told they had syphilis, nor were they ever treated for it. According to the Center for Disease Control, the men were told they were being treated for “bad blood” a local term used to describe several illnesses, including syphilis, anemia and fatigue.
The 40 year study was controversial for reasons related to ethical standards primary because researchers knowingly failed to treat patients appropriately after the 1940s validation of penicillin as an effective cure for the disease they were studying. Revelation of study failures by the whistleblower led to major changes in U.S. law and regulation on the protection of participants in clinical studies. Now studies require informed consent (with exceptions possible for U.S. Federal agencies which can be kept secure by Executive Order) communication of diagnosis, and accurate reporting of test results.
By 1947, penicillin had become the standard treatment for syphilis. The studies continued under numerous US Public Health Service supervisors, until 1972, when a leak to the press eventually resulted in its termination. The victims of the study included numerous men who died of syphilis, wives who contracted the disease, and children born with congenital syphilis.
This was a very unethical act, doctors took an oath to save lives but these researcher withheld medication

Wealth

...P A R T I I Be Creative W hat is the greatest difficulty people have in thinking about problems and issues? The standard answer is “the difficulty of evaluating the various solutions and choosing the best one.” In some cases, this may be true. But two other difficulties are equally troublesome: identifying problems and issues before they become crises, and getting beyond common, unoriginal solutions to creative ones. The first chapter in this part introduces the creative process. The other chapters expand this introduction, showing you how to search for challenges, express and investigate problems and issues, and produce many and varied solutions. By the end of Part II, you will have developed a proactive approach to problems and issues and learned how to stimulate your imagination. FIRST EDITION This book is dedicated to Edward Beitchman, my beloved uncle, who gave me my first concept of heaven. Every year, around the Thanksgiving table, he spoke of a night in the hospital when he awoke to see the souls of his departed loved ones sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting for him. I never forgot that story. And I never forgot him. Everyone has an idea of heaven, as do most religions, and they should all be respected. The version...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
