The Lone Star Frontera, Texas is the small town in which this movie takes place. It starts out with the discovery of the remains of an old corrupt Sheriff named Charley Wade. Charley was the sheriff in 1957, but Sheriff Sam Deeds is the current Sheriff of the small town and he discovers surprising facts as he tries to solve the murder of Charley. Sam’s dad, Buddy Deeds, was known to be enemies with Charley thus he is the prime suspect in the investigation. However Charley had tons of enemies since he was racist, a murderer, and corrupt by taking money from every business. Several people warned Sam not to investigate the murder because it was old news and no one liked Charley anyways. Someone even warned him that if he keeps digging he might not like what he finds. However Sam keeps investigating and uncovers that his childhood sweetheart is actually his half sister, but they are so madly in love they decide to forget they are related and choose to be together. He also finally uncovers the truth about Charley’s murder. His father did not kill Charley he actually tried to stop Hollis from shooting Charley. Hollis is the mayor now, but back then he was just a fed up deputy. Hollis shot Charley in an effort to save an innocent black man from being murdered by Charley; he was just tired of seeing Charley kill innocent people. Sam understands the reasons why Hollis killed Charley and agrees with them so in the end he does not arrest the major instead he decides to let it remain an unsolved mystery. This film was actually interesting because it combines murder, love, and history. From this movie I was able to understand the history of the Americas a bit more. I knew that Caucasians, Hispanics, and African Americans didn’t get along but I didn’t know that even some Hispanics didn’t like Hispanics. Mercedes Cruz in this film constantly shows her dislike towards Hispanics by calling them wetbacks. Basically this film helped me understand that even though America was depicted as the land of the free the Hispanics and African Americans were still prisoners to Caucasians and this went on for a while. I cannot believe that Africans and Caucasians could not be in a relationship together without it being looked down upon or teased by other Caucasians even in the 1970s! The history of America has definitely changed from its old conservative prejudiced ways. This film can be used to teach students how lucky they are now and how blessed they are that history has changed. I think they would be amazed to see how different the generation was when this movie took place. They would be able to understand what the Americas were really like back then and actually believe since this movie is not too dramatic or cheesy like others. I think students could really take away the differences in eras from this movie which would in turn help them better understand just what it was like living in the 1900s.

...In John Sayles’ Lone Star, the main character Sheriff Sam Deeds is deeply in love with a teacher name Pilar Cruz. Their relationship did not start as adults, but when they were still children way back in high school. Although their relationship might seem to be a normal man-woman relationship, we see that there is more to this unusual relationship. Throughout the movie Sayles hints at this unusual relationship such as when Pilar says, “I was on the playground with all the other kids, but I thought he was only looking at me.” This shows that she was special, different from the rest of her peers and hints at the ending of the movie. By the end, we see that the two are actually siblings. John Sayles uses their unusual relationship to challenge the way we and society view sexual taboos and makes us question what is a sexual taboo and what makes it so wrong. A sexual taboo is a “code” created by society that should never be broken and in the case of Sam Deeds and Pilar’s, they have broken the sexual taboo of incest. They fell in love as kids and continued to carry that love within them, even after they have been separated for a long period of time. Although they have broken this taboo, the blame cannot be put on them. Near the end of the movie, Sam says, “Yeah, and my mother was a saint. For fifteen years the whole damn town knew he had another woman on the side. Stole ten thousand dollars to set her up in business. But hell, what's that? You got a problem? Buddy'll fix it. The Lone Star Rebellion

...The Lone Star Rebellion - Chapter 13 - The Rise of a Mass Democracy 1/6/14 The Lone Star Rebellion, also known as the Texas Rebellion or Texas War of Independence, begun on October 2nd, 1835, and ended on April 21st, 1836. The last battle, the Battle of San Jacinto, was the battle that ended Santa Anna’s (the dictator of Mexico) war on the Texans. Texans wanted freedom from Santa Anna and Mexico because they had become bankrupt under the rule of Mexico and thought that if they had their own republic, that they would be able to regain a healthier financial status. Sam Houston was the main general in the Battle of San Jacinto, winning the war for Texas. San Jacinto is close to the city of Houston, the town that is named after him for his efforts in creating the Republic of Texas. On October 2nd, 1835, the Texan Army attacked in the battle that was called the Battle of Gonzales. The Mexicans retreated early, with two Mexican soldiers getting killed and one Texan soldier was injured because he fell off his horse during the battle. On October 3rd and 4th the Texan Army regrouped and continued to gather in Gonzales. General Martín Perfecto de Cos, Santa Anna’s brother-in-law, was shocked to find out that the Texan Army had won the battle, and rushed to Bexar. He left on the journey with over half of his soldiers, but because of transportation issues, most of his war supplies stayed in the city of La Bahía, where he had been living. The Texans, unaware that Cos had left the city...

Lone Star Essay

...The cultural iconography of the film lone star cannot be mistaken. It is however the exact type of iconography that Jose Limon speaks of in his essay, a shift of the social relations between Anglos and Mexicans during a specific time frame in the southwest. From a generalist’s perspective, lone star is the story of a man on the search for the answer to a mystery and in the process discovers more of his own personal history. Inside this story however John Sayles seamlessly weaves in little tidbits of others lives into the grand scheme of the story. The most important detail in understanding these tidbits is to understand that almost all of them in some form or another revolve around history, the history of a family, friends, a town, and a relationship. These problems and issues involving history draw heavily on problems that still to this day remain prevalent, especially living in a state such as New Mexico. This all leads up to a rather spectacular conclusion in which classical notations of history are “re-worked” if you would to show a stark new knowledge (or lack thereof) of how In certain situations human nature tends to transcend its own history. These conclusions, the special conclusions are more common in our conditions of today. Lone star especially during a time in which these types of inferences and stigmas were so prevalent, provided an insight into the ways we can exist outside our cultural history by choosing to exist only in the present. Choosing to let blood only...

Lone Star Nation Book Reveiw

...Lone Star Nation Book Written By: H.W. Brands Published By: Anchor Books Published in: New York in February 2005 Book Review Written By: Meg Murphy H.W. Brands is very good at bringing to life all the famous characters and events that walk through the founding of Texas. Despite years of tall tales, movies and others taking liberties with the facts, on its own the story is a good one. This book is not just about the history of Texas, but details the accounts of the individuals' lives and struggles during the colonization and fight for the independence of Texas. H. W. Brands brings to the reader vivid portrayals of such great men as Andrew Jackson, Stephen F. Austin, and Sam Houston along with a host of lesser known individuals whose pioneering spirits brought them to the Texas borders only to face opposition from Spaniards, marauding and hostile Indian attacks, and ultimately an army of power-hungry Mexican leaders, fearful of the growing numbers of American settlers. He begins by painting a picture of Moses Austin, a failed businessman who, like many others, was driven to this remote border province of Mexico. Austin and his brother successfully operated a lead mine in Virginia, borrowing heavily to finance the venture. A bank downturn left him holding worthless bank notes, starting his push to the Western borders to do business. He ends up over five hundred miles from the United States border at San Antonio de Béxar, the capital of Texas. He negotiates with a hostile Spanish...

Scholarship Propoasal

...Lone Star College – CyFair Honors Program Honors Scholarship Proposal Presented by: Jacob N. Qurashi and Tashara A. Frasier I. Title (Honors Scholarship Proposal )   II. Purpose To create a scholarship for LSC-CyFair students actively enrolled in honors courses or taking honors by contract which will aide students enrolled in these courses and serve as a recruitment and retention incentive to both the honors program and the college at large. III. Introduction a. Background As part of an ongoing student outreach campaign for the LSC-CyFair Honors Program, the Honors Student Organization has participated in many campus events this last year. Interested students frequently ask whether or not the Honors Program offers a scholarship to its students. At the present time LSC-CyFair does not offer a scholarship to its honors students. We believe creating a scholarship will not only help students taking honors classes which typically require additional materials or expenses in addition to those already incurred in the regular section, but can used as a marketing device for the honors program and the campus. Over the last couple of years, representatives of the Honors Student Organization have meet with Student Outreach to encourage publicity of the Honors Program at Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District high schools and local National Honors Society advisors; the addition of an honors scholarship would be a powerful selling point to both...

Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project Analysis

...For all people, actions have consequences, a concept that many seem to forget. Being civically engaged is a responsibility of all people, and we should take pride in having the ability to serve and be involved within our communities at all. Robert Putnam, in his book: Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community (2000), suggests numerous ways in which we can attempt to promote and develop a stronger sense of civic engagement. Fortunately for Putnam, there is an endless list of organizations around the globe that seek to reinforce his suggestions. My cousin, Seve, worked as a part of a team to found a non-profit organization in Austin, Texas, called the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project, or LSVAP for short. In collaboration with a few of Putnam’s suggestions, Seve and her team work to build community and foster a commitment to the improvement of their clients’ lives....

Gregory W. Abbott's Lone Star Politics

...In the textbook, Lone Star Politics, it states that “Texans distrust the executive authority” (156) and that cannot be any truer. This distrust began since the experiences of the American colonists under the rule of the British King and result to that was most states in America had fragile executives so they gave the power to the legislative branch. It’s embedded in the history of Texas where the residents lack faith in the Texas government. But as the years went by, the state grew the power of the governor and gave him/her the extent to do more, but that still didn’t change the fact that they weren’t up to date on “modern Texas” (156-157) Since the early statehood of Texas, it has been governed by a numerous amount of male figures. The state has had around forty-eight governors since the beginning of Texas government, like James Pinkney Henderson as the first governor to the present time of modern Texas, Gregory W. Abbott....

Why Did The Lone Star Fight In The Civil War

...Why Did the Lone Star Fight The Civil War was one of the most famous wars in history; with a gruesome 620,000 deaths from America legitimately fighting itself. The Civil War was brought upon the “United States” because of the controversy on slaves; the Confederacy (the south) wanted to keep slavery, while the Union (the north) wanted to abolish it. Texas was part of the Confederacy, which leads us to the question, why did Texans fight? Texans fought in the Civil War because of their love for Texas, belief in State’s Rights, and to protect/preserve slavery. Patriotism for their state was one of the reasons Texans fought. John Rabb, a Texan who fought in the Civil War wrote several letters back home, revealing patriotism for Texas more than...
