...In John Sayles’ Lone Star, the main character Sheriff Sam Deeds is deeply in love with a teacher name Pilar Cruz. Their relationship did not start as adults, but when they were still children way back in high school. Although their relationship might seem to be a normal man-woman relationship, we see that there is more to this unusual relationship. Throughout the movie Sayles hints at this unusual relationship such as when Pilar says, “I was on the playground with all the other kids, but I thought he was only looking at me.” This shows that she was special, different from the rest of her peers and hints at the ending of the movie. By the end, we see that the two are actually siblings. John Sayles uses their unusual relationship to challenge the way we and society view sexual taboos and makes us question what is a sexual taboo and what makes it so wrong. A sexual taboo is a “code” created by society that should never be broken and in the case of Sam Deeds and Pilar’s, they have broken the sexual taboo of incest. They fell in love as kids and continued to carry that love within them, even after they have been separated for a long period of time. Although they have broken this taboo, the blame cannot be put on them. Near the end of the movie, Sam says, “Yeah, and my mother was a saint. ...The Lone Star Rebellion - Chapter 13 - The Rise of a Mass Democracy 1/6/14 The Lone Star Rebellion, also known as the Texas Rebellion or Texas War of Independence, begun on October 2nd, 1835, and ended on April 21st, 1836. The last battle, the Battle of San Jacinto, was the battle that ended Santa Anna’s (the dictator of Mexico) war on the Texans. Texans wanted freedom from Santa Anna and Mexico because they had become bankrupt under the rule of Mexico and thought that if they had their own republic, that they would be able to regain a healthier financial status. Sam Houston was the main general in the Battle of San Jacinto, winning the war for Texas. San Jacinto is close to the city of Houston, the town that is named after him for his efforts in creating the Republic of Texas. On October 2nd, 1835, the Texan Army attacked in the battle that was called the Battle of Gonzales. The Mexicans retreated early, with two Mexican soldiers getting killed and one Texan soldier was injured because he fell off his horse during the battle. On October 3rd and 4th the Texan Army regrouped and continued to gather in Gonzales. General Martín Perfecto de Cos, Santa Anna’s brother-in-law, was shocked to find out that the Texan Army had won the battle, and rushed to Bexar. It is however the exact type of iconography that Jose Limon speaks of in his essay, a shift of the social relations between Anglos and Mexicans during a specific time frame in the southwest. From a generalist’s perspective, lone star is the story of a man on the search for the answer to a mystery and in the process discovers more of his own personal history. Inside this story however John Sayles seamlessly weaves in little tidbits of others lives into the grand scheme of the story. The most important detail in understanding these tidbits is to understand that almost all of them in some form or another revolve around history, the history of a family, friends, a town, and a relationship. These problems and issues involving history draw heavily on problems that still to this day remain prevalent, especially living in a state such as New Mexico. This all leads up to a rather spectacular conclusion in which classical notations of history are “re-worked” if you would to show a stark new knowledge (or lack thereof) of how In certain situations human nature tends to transcend its own history. Brands brings to the reader vivid portrayals of such great men as Andrew Jackson, Stephen F. Austin, and Sam Houston along with a host of lesser known individuals whose pioneering spirits brought them to the Texas borders only to face opposition from Spaniards, marauding and hostile Indian attacks, and ultimately an army of power-hungry Mexican leaders, fearful of the growing numbers of American settlers. He begins by painting a picture of Moses Austin, a failed businessman who, like many others, was driven to this remote border province of Mexico. Austin and his brother successfully operated a lead mine in Virginia, borrowing heavily to finance the venture.
