Reflection Paper – The Lost Gospels

Having watched the documentary “The Lost Gospels” presented by Anglican priest Peter Owen Jones have certainly caught my interest and brought me to analyzing certain possibilities in relation to the composition of our Bible. The documentary basically questions the reason why many Christian texts, that could possibly be included in the New Testament, have not made their way to our Bible. The succeeding paragraphs would tackle these different “lost gospels”, their stories and basically how I think of their content and how I think they would affect our religion today if they were included in the Bible.

The first lost gospel discussed can be found in Egypt, which is known to many Egyptians as the gospel of Thomas. It was said that this gospel has the possibility to even be the first ever manuscript that was written about Jesus and it was something that is even widely read. Most of the lines read by an expert were mostly mysterious. The first line of the gospel mainly states that whoever finds the correct interpretations of the secret saying in the Bible will never die or will have eternal life. In my opinion, this is a very strong statement since we all believe that all of us are entitled to an eternal life through our strong faith in God. I think this line brings so much confusion to everyone of us and I personally don’t believe in it. Also, there is this other line that says that women are not worthy of life and Jesus will lead the women to become male for them to be a living spirit like the male. Going back to the line in the gospel of Thomas, I think it was evidently shown especially back in the day that men possessed more rights and power than women. But this writing practically opposes the idea that will be discussed later which says that female were even more dominating back in the day.

The next gospels that were discussed were the gospels of Philip, Mary Magdalene and Acts of Tekla which had the idea that women are the one who took the center stage at churches and in the years of Jesus’ life women are more involved in the life of His mission. This evidently opposes the idea that was written in the gospel of James that was discussed earlier. The contents of the gospel of Philip was further elaborated having it said that Mary Magdalene had a key role in the life of Jesus, even stating that there had been an intimate physical relationship with the two. My opinion to this is a bit similar to Jones’ because I think that there is nothing wrong for Jesus to have a relationship with a someone and in this case Mary Magdalene. I mean, it would just change what we first believed in that Jesus had no any relationship with anyone, but I think it won’t affect all in all my perception of Jesus as our Savior.

There was also this gospel of Mary Magdalene in Oxford that was heavily damaged and divided in a small piece, which could give little details such as revealing itself as a gospel of Mary Magdalene. However, there were speculations that Mary Magdalene continued to exert huge influence even after the death of Jesus, which I think is just normal since she has been with Jesus and the apostles in their journey. This also led to the question that how come the writings of the said-to-be most important apostle to Jesus had gone missing and left all of us wondering what it contains. With this matter, I think the gospel of Mary Magdalene wants to remain a secret, whether it may bring us further confusion or enlightenment.

The last gospel was the gospel of Peter, who is also known as the head of the apostles, stated that Jesus did not die, and there were text that claims that as Jesus was crucified he was silent. This surprised me in a way since we’ve always had this belief that He was both human and divine. As for myself, I don’t believe in what Peter had written and would rightfully stick to what I believe in. After all, we do not have any certainty or assurance that it was really Peter who wrote it.

Other parts of the documentary was about the beliefs of a well known person back in the day which I personally think would just make the issue longer. I mean people would always have their say, and I choose not to complicate my thoughts more. He even stated that there were two persons in Jesus, which for me has no rightful basis unlike those writings of the people like Peter and others who have been really with Jesus all throughout his journey.

In conclusion, there may be these lost gospels that could inherently affect our faith or on the other hand enhance it. In my opinion, questions will continue to be asked, issues may continue to be raised, but it is really up to us what to believe in, because after all everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and at the end of the day, it all boils down to our faith to the Supreme Being.

...The Gospel of Luke has many similarities to the books of Matthew and Mark. The story of Jesus’ life from his birth to his death are similar and different to the other books. Being a graphic designer there are six images that are given. As a graphic designer candidate, choosing the best image of the final six creations is very difficult. The top image would be displayed as the cover for a new commentary on the Gospel of Luke. Image number two is the best selection for the documentation of the Gospel of Luke because of the genuine quality and colors being displayed. The Gospel of Luke also displayed great genuine image through stories like The Pharisee and the Tax collector; The Good Samaritan; The Parable of the Lost Sheep; Lazarus and the Richman; and the Parable of the Lost Son. The best image of Jesus is image two because of the genuine friendly figure that opens the door for everyone and that’s what the Gospel of Luke was all about. The Gospel of Luke portrayed life lessons about not assuming one’s self based off of a not so good title, but judging the individual’s mercy and belief towards God. Imagery number two displayed the most genuine welcoming environment compared to the other five images. The Gospel of Luke showed Jesus, and other Jesus figures being Genuine through the stories of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector; Good Samaritan; Parable of lost sheep; Lazarus and the Richman; and the Parable of the Lost Son. Summary of the New Testament Books

...Testament Books I. Luke The genre in the book of Luke is gospel. Luke is not only a physician, but also a historian that wrote concerning the perfect humanity of Jesus Christ. Throughout Luke’s gospel the humanity and compassion of Jesus is portrayed in His mission of seeking and saving the lost. In the introduction, Luke emphasized how the beginnings of Christ and John the Baptist intertwined. Jesus prepared for His ministry for over thirty years, which is summarized in one verse (2:52). After being baptized by John the Baptist and tempted by Satan, Jesus began His ministry that lasted only three years. In Jesus’ ministry, authority was shown over every realm, including demons, disease, nature, effects of sin, and traditions. With the growing number of ones that believed, there were also those that rejected the gospel. Jesus taught His disciples on a number of practical matters by parables, including the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and Lost Son. After the crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples before He ascended to heaven. II. John The genre in the book of John is gospel. The humanity of Jesus, as the Son of Man, is shown in the gospel of Luke. Jesus is portrayed in the gospel of John in His deity as the Son of God. The major theme in the gospel of John is twofold, eternal life given to those who believe in...

The Evangelist

...(2 Corinthians 5:18-19).    The ministry starts with a burden for seeing the lost come to Christ. If that doesn’t exist, we must pray for it to become a reality in our hearts. I pray that God would break our hearts for the lost.    Second, the evangelist must have a testimony that gives him credibility before the unsaved. If he does not live as one revived, no one will care to listen, and the listeners will be kept from some of the light that could have come their way (John 17:21, Hebrews 12:14, Matthew 5:16). If a testimony has been lost, we must ask for forgiveness and begin to shine forth the Light of Christ.    Third, the evangelist must be a person of prayer. He must be pleading with God for opportunities to share the gospel, and he must be interceding on behalf of particular souls. He knows that salvation cannot be manipulated, and he is trusting God to release some of the captives of the devil   Fourth, the evangelist must know the message of the gospel. He knows that God is holy, that man is a sinner, and that Christ is the sacrifice for sin. He knows that a person must repent of his sins and put his trust in Christ in order to be made righteous before a holy God. He is not afraid to talk about hell and breaking the law of God. He is eager, however, to share about the free gift of the grace of God through Jesus Christ   Fifth, he has practiced and rehearsed how to share the gospel. He has some “mental handlebars” of what verses to use and what questions to ask...

Pharisee and the Tax Collector

...tax collector and even thanks God that he is not like other men and women. This sense of self drives a wedge in the Pharisees relationship to God and also brings wrath and judgment upon himself. As I read this passage I found myself saying, "I must remain humble." Asking that question daily in every situation and circumstance will help each to avoid a mind set of self-righteousness as seen in Luke 18:9-14. (cf. Forerunner Commentary) The historical context of Luke is fairly interesting. Upon reading the gospels one might conclude that Matthew, Mark and Luke all pretty much say the same thing. This is slightly true; the gospels' sole purpose is centered on the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. However, the gospel of Luke begins by dedicating the writing to Theophilus in order that he might know that what was taught was trustworthy and true. It is thought that the gospel of Luke was written in order to stress the fact that the events he described in his gospel...

Share Jesus Without Fear Book Critique

...Without Fear. Nashville, TN: B and H Publishing Group, 1999. Author Information The author, William Fay, before giving his heart to God was a gambler, ran a house of prostitution, and was involved in the mafia. After having everything that success could offer, Fay began to feel as if something were missing. Eventually, his establishments were raided and he was faced with the threat of jail time. Faced with the possibility of spending his life in jail and losing everything he had, he made the commitment to believe in Jesus. Fay is currently a Chaplain with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency and a host of the radio show, “Let’s Go”. He evangelizes by sharing his testimony and loving people with simple, basic methods of sharing the gospel. Content Summary Fay begins his book by describing the state of evangelism in churches today. In the brief first two chapters, Fay explains that Christians can not fail if they will just share their faith. It is the sharing itself that is our success, not the expected outcome (Fay, 3). Fay describes the vast majority of Christians that are guilty of committing what he calls the sin of silence. He expresses the need for Christians to be excited about their relationship with Christ and to share their faith (Fay, 7). In one story that Fay tells, a woman who is in adultery, surrenders her life to Christ and goes back to her husband asking for forgiveness. Two days later the woman’s husband contacts Fay to tell him something was different...

The Last Gospel

...The Last Gospel Last week we were able to witness a deeper and more expound explanation of the history related to Jesus. It was a video executed by BBC entitled “The Last Gospel”. It was a really long video but it had really interesting insights into it. It was explained in the documentary that there is more to the theological aspect of life in the history other than what we know and what had been taught to us. Ever since I was a child, teachers and parents would tell and advise us to read the bible as it would strengthen our faith in the Lord, but unfortunately, no matter how we read the bible, we never knew of the true meaning embedded in the essence of the texts that we are ignorantly scanning through. I had the same impression and understanding of the bible until I took the Tredtri class. I believe that through this Tredri class is where I was able to develop my maturity and proper mindset on how to treat the bible. I guess there’s just so much to learn about the bible than what is outside the premises of the usual definition of it. The film was able to trigger the viewer’s curiosity, so much, that it grabbed fully the attention of everybody. It talked about the gospels of Thomas, Philippe, Peter and Mary Magdalene. This video talks about the nature of life itself. There were also insights that it was not peter that was supposed to be the first pope but rather should be Mary Magdalene. There were actually countless of books that were not considered or were not...

Gospel Message

...century the Christian gospel is perceived to be a thing of the past, that was then, this is now, philosophy, and it’s all about me attitude and what I can gain. Some perceive the Bible as just a good story, and nothing else. Most hope by living a good life, never doing anything they think is wrong, that they are going to Heaven. Some have this attitude of Why would a loving God send me to hell? They do not understand that being a Christian we have to live a separated life and the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ and that nothing we do outside of Christ will get us to Heaven. The gospel can be morally rejected because of a person’s worldview what they perceive to be right or wrong. First people must see themselves as being lost; before they can see a need for a Savior. No one wants to be judged for what they may believe is right, not understanding that God is our only judge and that it is by his standards that we are judged by not man’s. Some emotionally reject the gospel when they see a loved one suffering, or when one has lost a loved one. This causes a person to hardened their heart from ever hearing the gospel and knowing the true meaning of the word love and how God so loved us all that he sent his son to die on that cruel cross for our sins. The Christian gospel is rejected intellectually because of a person’s perspective of the Bible. Is the Bible believable? In a society that feeds off of power, fortune and fame the gospel of Jesus Christ sounds...

...SOUL WINNING Soul Winning is God's Plan to Bring Lost Sinners to Christ for Salvation The term “soul-winning” simply refers to the practice of trying to lead lost sinners to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. Surely, I nor you can save anybody—Only Jesus Christ can save!!! However, God Almighty has entrusted the job of soul-winning to ALL HIS DISCIPLES. If you are a saved, born-again Believer, then you are COMMANDED to be a soul-winner. Listen to the clear teaching of Jesus Christ Himself in Matthew 28:19 and 20, “Go ye therefore, and TEACH ALL NATIONS, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: TEACHING THEM to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” It is our duty as Children of God to “teach them.” Teach who? We are to teach the Gospel of Christ to lost sinners. We are to teach those whom we lead to Christ how to win others to Christ. We are we supposed to teach them. What do we teach them? “...to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” It was the responsibility of the disciples in Jesus’ day to teach the Gospel to all nations (all people). If someone became a Believer, accepting Jesus Christ as Almighty God and Savior, then the disciples were to help that new convert grow in the Lord and become a soul-winner also. This is God’s divine plan to win the lost to Christ—We are responsible!!! I am sickened when I hear some dead-beat...

Heritage of Faith

...Week 5 Questions 1. What are the main characteristics of Matthew and Mark? Use the material from the video lecture and your own insights from reading these Gospels. Mathew and Mark complement each other by being complete opposites. The Gospel of Matthew is the first of the 4. He left his position as a tax collected for the government to follow the Messiah. Matthew provides us with a historic record from Jesus’s birth in Bethlehem to his development along with fulfillment of his ministry by a very systematic approach. His book emphasizes Jesus teachings but also what he did. Also, Matthew utilized number sets of 3, specifically profound of the numbers 3, 5, 7. Mark on the other hand couldn’t be more opposite. His Gospel moves quickly from miracles to conflict. Marks approach tended to be more sporadic and less attuned to lists or an organization structure. Although, his Gospel is filled with action. His style was worded perfectly in our video lecture, “as being a man of breathless excitement.” Mark primarily affirms the identity as Jesus as the Son of God, dramatically interplaying miracles and conflict showing Jesus true unmistakable power and greatness. The beauty in these to Gospels is that they leave nothing out and represent the king of Kings as it should be. By being complete opposites their complement rests on being everything the other is not. Thus Mathew’s strengths plays into the Mark’s weaknesses’ and vice versa. Although the combination sets...

How to Mobilize Your Church to Evangelize

...How To Mobilize Your Church To Evangelize Introduction The number of people in the world who do not affiliate themselves with a religion of any sorts is at a all time high, and the number continues to grow. “One-fifth of the U.S. public and a third of adults under the age of 30 - are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever.” Not only is church identification low among today’s society, but also church attendance and the level of importance emphasized by those same individuals are also at an all time low. Although the statistics can cause an unsteady flood of emotions, there is light at the end of the tunnel. That same research study concluded that of the adults that do not identify or associate themselves with religious group or sect, “Two- thirds say they believe in God. More than half say they feel a deep connection with nature and the earth and more than a third state they are spiritual but not religious. One in five state that they pray every day.” Knowing this information can prompt two different reactions. One could be that we allow this knowledge to intimidate the church and continue to cripple our efforts to reach these unreached people. The other option is to allow this information to act as a challenge to the church and the believers that congregate under the common thread of Jesus Christ and allow these numbers to propel the church to re-evaluate the evangelistic status quo; go back to the biblical basic of the early church and come up with a new...

Searching Foranswers

...has ever known. To believe in the Bible in our era with so little proof and evidence seems difficult to many of us. Apparently, faith is stronger, and it’s what keeps religion alive. But there has to be something beyond that. Something that’s more reliable and firm. That is why we search for answers. Unfortunately, faith isn’t always enough. The four main gospels in the Bible that we know of are those of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. What most of us don’t know is that these weren’t the only ones written. Imagine the amount of people in that era who decided to write about Jesus’ trials. His life was recorded by thousands of followers across the land. A tale so interesting and compelling, but it was scattered and unorganized because people’s accounts on facts and occurrences differed. The word spread and about 300 years after the crucifixion of Christ, the number of his followers had multiplied which led to Christianity becoming a major movement throughout Eastern Europe. The Bible wasn’t a published book until someone with enough power and a clever plan got their hands on the loose pages that were the gospels. You may know him as Constantine the Great. He was the current Roman Emperor in 325 A.D. Few know that in his day, Rome’s official religion was a pagan cult based on sun worship— and Constantine was the head priest. The more Christianity expanded, the more of a threat it became as to omitting other religions, including Rome’s. The Emperor foresaw the...

Apologetics

...Christian gospel is perceived in our culture? Christian gospel in many ways is perceived in this day and age are a lost word. People have the art of praying and staying faithful to the word of God. God provided us with all kinds of blessings and opportunities in life so that we can flourish and prosper. Also God took all our sin to the cross and forgave us for everything we done that was not right in his eyes. We need to also understand that there is only one God and we need to cherish it every day of our lives. Today’s culture perceives the Gospel almost the same was as old days but how man tries to rewrite the word to fits our society today, people believe that s God except so of things that are going on today in this world i.e. same sex marriages, etc. but the word doesn’t say that is right and in God’s eye it’s a sin. Believe me I don’t judge I’m am far from a saint but we have to get back into reading and understanding the message of the gospel and live it. 2. What are some specific moral reasons people may reject the Christian gospel? People reject the gospel because they don’t understand what it means. I was one of those people that thought man created all this, that I was the one that got promotions or raises since I work so hard to get it. But all along GOD and his word proved to me that it was already planned. We also reject the gospel because it tells the truth about life and we sometimes can’t accept the truth. Then others don’t believe in the gospel for varies...

Matthew, Mark, And Luke's Gospel Essay

...problem that has been brought to attention is who wrote the initial Gospel first, and if so did one of the three simply take ideals from each other. The further time reaches towards the 21st century, many see Matthew as no longer the first author and it moves towards Mark as the initial writer. According to Elwell and Yarbrough (2013) on p. 156, “For over a thousand years this view, or one similar to it, held sway.” According to gotquestions.org (2016), “There is absolutely no problem with the idea that Matthew and/or Luke copied some text from Mark’s Gospel and used it in their Gospels. Perhaps Luke had access to Mark and Matthew and used texts from both of them in his own Gospel.” Luke to the synoptic issue of the written words of the gospels was a more over looked man than Matthew or Mark. Luke also used a more theological approach to his writing and at times, in terms of the Sermon on the Mount, had the least amount of information listed for the same and similar topic at hand. According to Elwell and Yarbrough (2013) on p.157, “Mark abbreviated Matthew, adding modification that Mark also made use of the Gospel of Luke.” This then shows us why the three gospels are so similar in...
