Joseph Campbell’s idea of a hero’s journey is the foundation of numerous heroes nowadays. Multiple hit movies and books have their storylines based on the steps of Campbell’s ideas. The call to action is the very first step in the hero’s journey. Achilles, the main character of Troy, is called to fight for Agamemnon, the Greek king who wanted to destroy Troy, his only opposition. But Achilles refuses to fight for him, because he is disgusted by Agamemnon. This is the refusal to the call, another stage in the Hero’s Journey. But Achilles is convinced by Odysseus and Achilles own mother to fight in the war against Troy, to earn his name for eternity. This is a direct example of the encouragement of a wise old man or woman, the next step in the Hero’s Journey! Crossing the threshold is the next stage, and in Troy, Achilles “crosses the threshold” when he lands on the beaches of Troy. Achilles leads the Greeks to an easy victory, slaughtering all the Trojans on the beach and taking the temple of Apollo. I was aware of her Spanish culture when I was first introduced to her just because of her first name. We sometimes forget how something as personal as our name is stamped by our cultural origin. I did further research into her name; I found out that Luciana is a typical Spanish name meaning light. The religious ties were very prevalent from the beginning even before I had started the interview. Argentina like most of Latin America and my own culture, the Caribbean has a deep history of colonialization; which is even more crucial part to the history of Luciana Cappuciano since she is of European ancestry. The Europeans arrived in Argentina 1502 this is most likely when Lucky’s ancestors first entered Latin America. One of the issues Lucky faced is being ethnically a Caucasian but identifying herself as a Latina. This is her avowal identity, meaning that is the identity “that [she] choose[s] to associate with and portray” (Willis-Rivera 28). However most American ascribes a Caucasian identity to her because of her blonde hair and fair skin; which is features attributes as white in America. Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot exemplifies the characteristics of the Theatre of the Absurd, not only through its content and dialogue, but also through its language and structure. The structure of dialogue chosen by Beckett, mixes short and concise sentences with meaningful ideas and opinions about the human condition. Although the dialogue appears to be an illogical banter, it would be a mistake to make the assumption that it has no meaning. For instance, throughout the play, Estragon and Vladimir repeat the lines “nothing to be done” and “nothing happens.” Such references along with the cyclical nature of the dialogue, suggest Beckett’s vision that human existence is bleak and that nothing significant ever really happens in our lifetimes, but instead the same situations are repeated throughout life. Beckett’s style revolutionizes the traditional play as he deviates from the orthodox playwright by creating a play with no central plot or storyline.
