Through a huge media campaign everyone in the town was informed of the spill and ordered to stop using the water. The corporation took full responsibility for the spill. They treated and cleaned the spill. They provided free testing for the citizens of the town for cadmium toxicity. They provided drinking water for all of the residents of the town. The even invited the EPA and hired an outside source to test the water after the treatment. The residents had no reports of illness or adverse effects because the company acted so quickly and efficiently. Life was good and the water was deemed good enough to use again. Soon after that, the company discovered that the spill had affected another town’s water supply Town B. Through the study of Town B’s water source information was received that a small amount of cadmium spilled in to Town B’s water source. Town B is very rural with a population of about 1,000 people. The amount of the spill had a very little chance of harming any of the town’s residents. The amount of cadmium found in the water supply was so small there was a 90 % chance that none of the town’s residents would be affected. Should Batter-con use the same methods of action and accommodation for Town B as Town A (cleaning the water, notifying residents with a media campaign,) as Town-A? ...The Hurt Man It is the late summer of 1888, and the town of Port William is a dangerous place for a child to be wandering around. Yet that is exactly what five-year-old Mat Feltner does. Danger lurks behind every corner, horses in the road, the occasional droves of animals, and plenty of anger fuelled fistfights inside the saloons or in the street. Death is something Mat Feltner is aware of, something most boys his age nowadays, thankfully, are not. He knows his three siblings are buried in the town’s graveyard. The short story “The Hurt Man” by Wendell Berry revolves around the themes death and grief, and revolves around how Mat comes to not only be aware of the two things, but to comprehend them. The short story takes place in the town of Port William and the year is 1888, as previously mentioned. It is a small town, built along a road that used to be no more than a buffalo trace. In one end of the town is a school, in the other a graveyard. There are a couple of saloons, a church, a blacksmith, a bank, a hotel and some stores, and a dozen miles by river to the nearest courthouse. ...Vast Hell “A small town is a vast hell” The quote above describes how badly some people perceive small towns. There could be many reasons behind this strong dislike. One of them could be that small towns are often seen as these tight and small communities where everybody know each other in one way or another and are noisy with too much time on their hands, which resolves in gossip spreading out quickly in town when something happens. But what do you do when you try to move past the gossip, and stumble upon the ugly truth? We see this in the novel “Vast Hell” by author Guillermo Martinez, where the quote is also from. The story takes place in a small village, and resolves around a man that thinks back to the arrival of a nameless young boy in the small-town, that manages to become the talk of town, when rumour starts spreading that he is romantically involved with the wife of one of the two barbers in town, who people call “the French Woman” for unknown reasons. Fuel is added to the fire when the boy and the French Woman disappear, leading half the town to believe they ran off together and the other half to believe that the barber somehow did away with them. Further investigation into the case gives the story a whole different turn, because after digging in the ground to see if the barber had buried them there, they do find dead bodies, but not the bodies of the boy and the French woman, but of a lot of unknown people. When looking at this painting you view quickly from the right to the left and can almost feel the inevitable execution. There is also a line in the sand separating the light from the dark. Seems to be imply between the good of the Spaniards who are about to be executed, from the evil hooded men who are shooting. I believe that there is an implied line between the end of the gun and the man with his arms up. It is giving an action that you can almost feel the gunshot from the barrel executing the man. Especially how when looking from right to left it goes from dark to light, like the gun has been fired. B.)Shape-The geometric shape of the lantern stands out to me right away. So instead of flying there he decides to hitch hike there from Boston, Massachusetts. He thinks he can blow off some steam this way. As Josh goes along on his journey, he meets a man willing to bring him to Dallas. Josh accepts the mans offer, but instead of going to Dallas, the man purposely drives the wrong way. The man then tells Josh he must pay for the ride even though he went the wrong way, Josh refuses to pay and started to walk again in the middle of nowhere. The driver then jumps him and takes his shoes, over $200 and his expensive watch, leaving him there to die until a woman with a horse and carriage finds him and takes him to a strange farm town with no electricity or telephones. He stays for a couple of days because of his terrible conditions from being jumped by that driver. Banks tells this story through multiple character each of which brings their own understand and view of the accident. Billy Ansel was one of the characters used to convey his message. Billy is a parent of two children in the town of Sam Dent. Billy is a veteran, business owner, and widower. All of these moving parts have played huge roles in shaping the character that Billy portrays but nothing could prepare him for losing his children. At the beginning of the story Billy is shown as a person to look up to and rely upon in hard times. But there is another side to Billy that is explored in the latter half of the book. Through the revelation of more detail Billy’s character is better-rounded and with that rounding he also slips into a darker side of himself. This side which is far darker and hidden from the public is brought to the surface when Billy losses his children and changes forever. Billy first appears in the story as a father who was raising his twin children on his own after his wife passed away from cancer.
