Critical Essay
The Manipulation of Anne by Mrs. Smith On the surface Mrs. Smith appears to be the shining light that brings truth and a sense of justice to Persuasion after she reveals the truth about Mr. Elliot to Anne. However, if one were to dig deeper into the dialogue and analyze the language and the syntax between Mrs. Smith and Anne on page one hundred and sixty-six, one can see Mrs. Smith isn’t the savior that she would appear to be on the surface. Mrs. Smith is instead this person who is manipulative and conniving by using Anne’s admiration towards her as a way to then persuade Anne to do as she wishes which ultimately results in Mrs. Smith regaining some of her lost fortune through Anne and Captain Wentworth. This is significant because the narrative voice in Persuasion presents the argument that persuasion as a force upon others can be both a good and bad thing depending on the true intentions of the one persuading.
Mrs. Smith and Anne have had a long-standing relationship that was formed several years ago when Mrs. Smith had helped Anne overcome the loss of her mother while away at school. Ever since then, Anne had deeply admired Mrs. Smith for what she did and the character she had shown. From the beginning of the dialogue between Mrs. Smith and Anne, Mrs. Smith is already trying to use Anne’s admiration towards herself for her own motives. When Mrs. Smith says, “My dear,” she is implying that Anne is someone whom she cares for. Mrs. Smith uses the word “My” to give this possessive connotation to the word “dear” which is usually a term to describe someone that one cares for, who is Anne in this instance. This is saying Anne is the one person that Mrs. Smith cares for. Mrs. Smith does this to manipulate Anne to make her attempt to persuade Anne easier. This will make Mrs. Smith’s attempt easier because to

Students continue to show progress in understanding of both addition and subtraction skills through direct instruction, guided practice, homework practice worksheets, and in-class assessments, both informal and formal. During in class station activities as an alternative to outdoor recess, Mr. Duncan pulls out several games/activities and a timer; students will rotate through game stations every 10 minutes to allow students to experience various stations. Two of the activity stations involve math games such as Monopoly Junior and Candy Land. As students delve into their activity stations, Mr. Duncan observers his students unknowingly performing algorithms, maybe without a true understanding of why they are doing so yet, but still – applying learned skills correctly to real-world activities. Later that same school year, students in Mrs. Robinson’s second grade class are reviewing the value of money. Zayne’s father gives him $1 for each chore completed during the week. Within a few weeks, Zayne earns and saves $30 dollars and decides to spend his money on a Snakeez, a portable cup with a lid that...

Business Reading

...Economist readings 1. It pays to give Allowing consumers to set their own prices can be good for business; even better if the firms give some of it to charity http://www.economist.com/whichmba/it-pays-to-give?fsrc=nlw|mgt|01-12-2011|management_thinking [pic]IN OCTOBER 2007 Radiohead, a British rock group, released its first album in four years, “In Rainbows”, as a direct digital download. The move drew a fair bit of attention (including from this newspaper) not only because it represented a technological thumb in the eye to the traditional music industry, but also because the band allowed listeners to pay whatever they wished for it. Some 60% of those who seized the opportunity paid nothing at all, but the band seemed pleased with the result; one estimate had it earning nearly $3m from the experiment. One group outside the music industry taking an interest was a trio of professors then at the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego: Ayelet Gneezy, Uri Gneezy and Leif Nelson (who is now at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley). Inspired, they designed a series of experiments to gauge whether pay-what-you-want pricing would work for other businesses. Their most recent experiment, co-authored with Amber Brown of Disney Research and published in Science, also stirred in a new element: would it make any difference if firms donated some of the pay-what-you-want fee to charity? The authors set up their pricing experiment...

Did you know that Antoine Lavoisier was the discoverer of both elements? Contributions to Science Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier is one of the most important scientists in the history of chemistry. He discovered elements, formulated a basic law of chemistry and helped create the metric system. During his time, people believed that when an object burns, a mysterious substance called ‘phlogiston’ was released. This was called the ‘phlogiston theory’. Lavoisier’s experiments demonstrated the contrary, i.e. when something burned, it actually absorbed something from the air, instead of releasing anything. He later named the ‘something’ from the air as oxygen, when he found that it combined with other chemicals to form acid. (In Greek, ‘oxy’ means sharp, referring to the sharp taste of acids.) Henry Cavendish had earlier isolated hydrogen, but he called it inflammable air. Lavoisier showed that this inflammable air burned to form a colourless liquid, which turned out to be water. The Greek word for water is ‘hydro’, so the air that burned to form water was hydrogen! Lavoisier was...

Tempest Information

...This is a good article. Click here for more information. The Tempest From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from The tempest) This article is about the Shakespeare play. For other uses, see The Tempest (disambiguation). The shipwreck in Act I, Scene 1, in a 1797 engraving by Benjamin Smith after a painting by George Romney The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand. There is no obvious single source for the plot of The Tempest, but researchers have seen parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbe novo, and eyewitness reports by William Strachey and Sylvester Jordain of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda, and the subsequent conflict between Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Somers. In addition, one of Gonzalo's speeches is derived from Montaigne's essay Of the Canibales, and much of Prospero's renunciative speech is taken...
