Social media has been growing astoundingly throughout the past decade, connecting billions of people together through online platforms. Although it might not be for everyone, social media is part of our everyday lives, and that’s a fact that nobody can ignore. We often hear stories about how social media is negatively affecting our society, but is it really? Look at how far all these online platforms have gotten us; believe it or not, the modernity of our world has been substantially brushed up thanks to social media. It’s a form of technology that has brought us easier education, faster communication, stronger relationships, and enhanced traditional marketing mediums. With that being said, I think it’s fair to say that the positive …show more content…
It was April 25th 2015 when a devastating earthquake occurred in Nepal, killing over 9,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands of people lost and homeless. The same day, CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, activated a safety check on the biggest social media platform that allows the people affected by the earthquake to let family and friends know of their status. At that time, there were plenty of tourists who were lost but have been found thanks to the fast communication social media offers. “It’s moments like this that being able to connect really matters.” said Zuckerberg. But that’s not all, sending a message out to the world couldn’t get any easier with social media, writing an update on Twitter won’t take more than 10 seconds. Let’s be realistic, you’re not really going to pick up the phone and call everyone to inform them about something and just hang up. Not only will that take a lot of your time, but it’ll also be …show more content…
Especially if you’re starting a new business, it can be really difficult to get your name out there. However social media has a massive impact on soaring your business to new heights, simply by increasing exposure and traffic and developing loyal fans. A close friend of mine opened a business not so long ago, a restaurant to be exact. To be completely honest, without the impact of social media, it would have went to the ground. Knowing how important exposure is, he began posting online about his restaurant and advertising on social media platforms, which eventually got him the exposure he needed. But he made more use of social media by having his friends post about the restaurant as well, it was a basically like a chain that kept reaching new people every day. And that’s how social media led to the success of his restaurant. Investing some of your time on social media can create an increase in exposure, allowing companies to stay at their peak. In addition to that, different platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn have made it much easier for marketers to get a hold of their audiences based on job titles and

Negative Effects of Social Media

...Negative Effects of Social Media Although created to allow people to keep in contact, social media is a ticking time bomb that has adverse effects. The negative effects from social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, range from misinformation to arguments and depression. There is nothing that goes unsaid when it comes to online communication. Numerous hot topics are hit every single day leading to resentment, hate and the ending of friendships. False Information The commonality of false information on social media is unreal. Every day I skim through my Facebook feed, I see the most ridiculous things being shared by my friends that are assumed to be true. I can’t help but to subconsciously look down on people who share such things. Users of social media are much too quick to share information without first verifying their sources. It is 2014 and in this day and age, we are only as smart as our ability to use the internet correctly. Establishing the validity of everything shared is something that should be done more often, yet is rarely done at all. There are countless bogus websites, such as The Onion, who post ridiculous articles that prey on the emotions from recent events. Current, trending topics are Robin Williams’ suicide and the case of Michael Brown. People are getting extremely worked up reading false articles that lead to their misguided opinions on topics that aren’t even real. It’s no secret that when emotions and social media mix, fire is ignited. ...

It was a serious mistake because due to his poor choice of words the post indicated that he was threatening the police guard. Few adjust the settings because they feel like Facebook has enough privacy and some are also unaware of the setting options. For the case in paragraph 1 I believe the officials did the right thing. Negative Effects of the Social Media

...2015 Negative Effects of the Social Media Nowadays with the development of advanced technology, social media become more and more popular. There are about 2 billion social media users around the globe. By social media, people can share and receive updated information whenever and whatever they do. Many people are keen on the social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube because they can connect people with each other conveniently. However, these social media bring many potential dangers. In my opinion, social media do more harm than good. It is no doubt that social media provide people lots of conveniences. For example, if students encounter difficult questions in homework, they do not need to use telephones or mobile phones any longer. They just need to log in their Facebook and discuss the problems with friends. This method not only saves time but also saves a telephone charge. That's why social media are so popular that billions of people use them. Although the social media have benefits, they bring many harms. The problem that students are addicted to the social media is becoming more and more severe. For example, many students who have lots of friends in the Facebook spend much time on chatting with friends and ignore their studies. In addition, the flash games on Facebook are like drugs. The games make students addicted so that they can not concentrate on studying. Spending several hours is very common for them. Social media is also harmful to the social stability...

The Negative Effects of Social Media

...The Negative Effects of Social Media Christine M. Boyd University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Social media is something that has become a part of the lives of millions. Every day we see people constantly posting on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some think that these media outlets unite people together, but I’m beginning to think the contrary is closer to the truth. It’s common to see multiple people in a room glued to their phones instead of actually engaging with each other. In this paper, I will investigate why people have developed an obsession with social media, how social media creates a false reality, and how social media can be harmful to our mental health. There are a variety of reasons why people have developed an obsession with social media, making it harder to cut ties with it. According to the article Technology Addiction in Adolescents by Vivek Agarwal and Sujit Kumar Kar, “Companies making mobile phones, made them compatible for other technologies like – games, videos, internet browsing and many other applications which facilitate their wide circulation and making them more addicting objects” (pg. 171). When people have constant internet access through their smart phones, it makes it extremely difficult to avoid social media. Smart phones usually vibrate or make a noise when you get a Facebook or Twitter notification, which can increase your likelihood of checking the application. Along with constant internet access, excessive social media use has been linked...

Negative Effects of Social Media

...Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace allow you to find and connect with just about anyone, from a coworker in a neighboring cube to the girl who played Emily in your high school production of "Our Town" thirty years ago. Browsing these sites can make you feel connected to a larger community, but such easy, casual connection in an electronic environment can also have its downside. A False Sense of Connection According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections, he fears, will weaken. Cyber-bullying The immediacy provided by social media is available to predators as well as friends. Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers. The devastation of these online attacks can leave deep mental scars. In several well-publicized cases, victims have even been driven to suicide. The anonymity afforded online can bring out dark impulses that might otherwise be suppressed. Cyber-bullying has spread widely among youth, with 42% reporting that they have been victims, according to a 2010 CBS News report. Decreased...

...Additional Mental Health ISOLATION The use of messaging and social media messages have become a common occurrence in today’s society. Interaction on a human level has become less frequent in a person’s day-to-day living arrangements. Because of social media websites, interaction with others has become effortless, and people have isolated themselves behind online identities. Direct communication has been eliminated and much of society has been reduced to using abbreviations that express their emotions. Examples of important aspects of communication that are falling by the wayside today include:  Basic verbal communication  Tone of voice  Facial expression  Body language Social media is removing these very human qualities of communication by eliminating the need to get out and socialize with others in person. Sleep Disturbances Evidence also suggests that social media overuse can contribute to sleep disturbances. Studies of Chinese and American children, published in the "Journal of Sleep" and the "Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics," found that computer use among adolescents was associated with later bed times, later waking times, less restful sleep and an overall decrease in sleep. The use of computers before bedtime has also raised concerns among sleep experts, including Phyllis Zee, a neuroscience professor at Northwestern University, that the light from screens is affecting circadian rhythms and possibly...

Social Media Impact and Implications on Society By Nick Pernisco, SJMLE Editor In the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on usercreated content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. Thanks to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. This issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education aims to explore some of the issues related to social media, and a generation fully engaged in this interactive world.
