A Summary of Theological Reflection on Jesus' Temptation, Baptism, Transfigutation

...is found also in the Matthew and Luke versions, with the exception of "with the wild animals." According to the texts, after being baptized, Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in the Judean Desert. During this time, the devil appeared to Jesus and tempted him three times. Jesus having refused each temptation, the devil departed and angels came and brought nourishment to Jesus. Matt.4:2 set the stage for the great temptation involving Jesus. “He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry.” We immediately read, "The tempter approached him and said to him, if you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread" (vs. 3). The devil looks for the best time to tempt you and me. It may be when the Christian is without a job, is having family problems, or the local church is experiencing difficulties that the devil makes his appearance and appeal. But Jesus shows us that regardless of the circumstances surrounding us, we are able to overcome the devil. The devil quotes verbatim from the Septuagint translation regarding Psalms 91: 11, 12. While the devil correctly quotes the scripture, however, he does not correctly apply the teaching contained in Psalms 91: 11, 12 to the circumstances at hand. Hence, just because scripture is quoted does not necessarily mean the truth is being taught. Jesus both correctly quotes and applies scripture (Matt. 4: 4, 7, 10, see Deut. 8: 3; Deut. 6: 16; and 6: 13, respectively). Jesus presented scripture...

Chapter Summary Of Chapter 12-George Roman Pocock

...“In a sport like this—hard work, not much glory, but still popular in every century—well, there must be some beauty which ordinary men can’t see, but extraordinary men do.” Chapter 1-George Yeoman Pocock-provided the shell that was used by the boys in the Olympics Page 1 He is talking about the sport of rowing (crew). That is hard and there is not much glory in it. In our society today, there is not much glory in a sport that is not football, basketball, baseball or hockey. I am a swimmer and I feel that his quote can be said for my sport also. I work very hard at swimming. I train with a National team six days a week for about three hours a night. ...love for his brother, and growing from a child to a young man. Tim has changed in a very diverse way throughout the story. One big impact in Tim Meeker's life is that Tim has shown the greatest love for his brother by believing in Sam. (2.9-10) "Tim, did Sam say anything to you about going to the war? I didn't want to lie to Father, but I didn't want to give Sam away, either. Well, he said he was, but I thought he was probably just boasting." This quote shows he cares and...

Character Analysis: The Outsiders

...This makes him an insider because all the rest of the gang fights in rumbles so he fits in. Darry didn't want Ponyboy to fight in this rumble because it was dangerous, but Ponyboy wanted to because he is a Greaser and acts like the rest of the gang.“Oh, no, I thought in mortal fear, I've got to be in it. Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs” (Hinton #134). This quote supports my claim because Ponyboy was an insider by being a Greaser and fighting in the rumble to beat the Socs. Another quote that supports my claim is when Johnny and Ponyboy were about to get jumped by the Socs before Johnny killed Bob. “I was getting mad. I was hating them enough to lose my head”(Hinton #55). This quote supports my claim because Ponyboy is an insider because like the rest of the Greasers he hates the Socs and will participate in the rumbles as a Greaser in order to defeat them. Although Ponyboy is an insider for these reasons his also and outsider for reasons like how he doesn't normally like to fight besides in...

Romeo says: Give me a torch: I am not for this ambling Being but heavy, I will bear the light Romeo said this to Benvolio at Capulet party. He doesn’t want to wear a mask because he is in the bad mood, heavy and he will stand still and carry the light. Romeo says: But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun Romeo said this to Juliet. He is saying that her beauty is like the sun. Shining beauty, pure, shiny. Romeo says: Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she Romeo said this to Juliet at the balcony. He is saying that he does not want the sun to arise because that means he will have to go home and there are chances that he will see Juliet again. Act 1 scene 5 Romeo says: O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! Antonio's Lessons

... The Luna are devoted farmers who worship the earth and the moon, while the Marez are vaqueros who are devoted to horses and the sun. Because of Antonio’s three older brothers chose the life of the Marez, Antonio is expected by his mother to choose the Luna and become a priest. “You are a Luna, they chanted in unison, you are to be a farmer-priest for mother”. (Anaya 26) Ultima teaches Antonio many things about morality. "In two days we would celebrate the mass of the dead, and after mass we would take her body to the cemetery in Las Pasturas for burial. But all that would only be the ceremony that was prescribed by custom. Ultima was really buried here. Tonight."(Anaya 262) Ultima teaches Antonio to keep his judgement apart from beliefs. Antonio accepts both the views of the Catholics and mysticism instead of choosing either one. Another thing that Antonio learns from Ultima is the idea that morality is not definite. In chapter 3, Ultima said that "Last night was hard for many men." This quote was...

The Cost Of Playing God In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

...Walton accompanied whale-fishers to the North Sea to brace himself for the cold he would meet on his own journey, he familiarized himself with his crew in an attempt to build morale and start to trust those with whom he would be sailing in case the worst were to happen (Shelley). The argument could even be made that the letters themselves are an act of preparation, as Walton uses them to say goodbye to his sister should she never see him again (Shelley). All of these are precautions that Victor did not take when attempting to create life. He did study extensively, but he admits to taking short cuts just to make his own life easier (Shelley). Also, unlike Walton, Victor did not warning given to those he claimed to love. Even on his wedding night, he kept Elizabeth in the dark as to the horror that had been stalking him...

Analysis of Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen

...experience feelings such as pity and guilt. I consider Wilfred Owen a good poet from the very start as he shows ability to captivate the reader into his story by applying and engaging heading. Dulce et Decorum est reveals the hidden truths of the past century’s war, by uncovering the cruelties the soldiers were left to face. The poem is authentic as Wilfred Owen was ‘there’ to experience the atrocities of the First World War. The poem begins with a glimpse at the soldiers’ living conditions and their lifestyle, which provided them with untimely age. The poet then describes a dreadful gas attack that follows along with its horrid outcomes. The poem resumes eventually, the poet confirms the present propaganda to be “the old Lie” – as the glory of war is a myth. Reading this poem, made me realize my own luck and circumstance: I have been fortunate to avoid the Wars and brutalities that were brought on by World War One. The appalling conditions the soldiers were left to face made me appreciate that my own life has not been disturbed. I am devastated by the fact that even today, many innocent people are exposed to such horrors. The poem is started unexpectedly: in the middle of action as if halfway through an incomplete event that has already started. The soldiers are trying to escape the enemy’s fire but their terrible health conditions dismiss them from strong and immediate action. “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, knock-kneed, coughing like hags” This statement provides...

Nature in Macbeth

...hare classify as a lion. They may have similarities, such as they are both birds or mammals, but they are opposites. After the quote is spoken, Ross reveals that the Thane of Cawdor has betrayed his country and Macbeth shall take his place. Macbeth becoming the Thane of Cawdor was an unusual event and not expected. When Macbeth finds the dagger in front of him, it alludes to this point even more. The foreshadowing of Macbeth's choice becomes evident when he says, "Nature seems dead" (II.i.50) For nature to seem dead would be the complete opposite of living because nature is thought to be continuously growing and changing, not dying. This is an unnatural event, that again foreshadows something bad, which is Duncan's death. Other unnatural occurrences happened prior to Duncan's death but were not explained until afterwards. When the old man says "'Tis unnatural / Even like the deed that's done. On Tuesday last A falcon tow'ring in her pride of place, was by a mousing hawk killed" (II.iv.10-13), it also proves the connection between unnatural events and humans. An owl tends to eat mice and hunt at night, a hawk is not it's usual meal. This strange event occurred prior to Duncan's death, which told of things to come. Another quote spoken by Ross, also foreshadows Duncan's death: "And Duncan's horses…. Summary "The moon out in it's full glory./ The stars...

Jesus

...Luke 2:1-20 1-5About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant. 6-7While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hotel. 8-12There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God's angel stood among them and God's glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid.
