The Public Needs To Know Food insecurity is a nationwide problem that has increased due to the economic recession. Have you ever wondered when you were going to have your next meal or where you were going to get the food to feed your family? Food pantries have become a necessary resource for those in need to feed their family. “In 2011, 14.9 percent of U.S. households were food insecure—up from 10.7 percent in 2001” (Coleman-Jensen, 2013). Several economic issues have contributed to the increased need for food pantries. One reason is that the economic recession has caused many Americans to lose their jobs, and lose their homes. Another economic restraint that is affecting families is the sequestration. Sequestration has resulted in government employees being furloughed. Furloughs are affecting families by cutting 20% of the government employees’ wages over an eleven week period. With the loss of financial stability, it has caused many families to lose the ability to adequately feed their families. As a result of lost income, families are relying more heavily on the resources that food pantries provide. In 2011, approximately 79% of households nationwide that have children had adequate food. That leaves an estimated 21% of households with children who will go hungry. Children that do not receive proper nutrition run a higher risk of health and developmental difficulties (Coleman-Jensen, McFall, & Nord, USDA, 2013). A local area food pantry, The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank in Fredericksburg, VA serves families that have food insecurities. The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank provides food to the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, King George and the City of Fredericksburg, along with communities in the neighboring area. (Fredfood.org)
Above is the 2009 food insecurity rate for children receiving services from the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. There are several ways to become involved with the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. One way to become involved is through donations. The food bank receives donations from corporations, and individuals that want to give to the community by providing needed items. Picture 1 I took this picture on August 4, 2013 at a Giant grocery store in Fredericksburg, VA.
Another way to get involved with the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank is to hold a food drive. Food drives are a wonderful way to get corporations and the community involved in the hunger relief effort. In addition to donating or holding a food drive you can be a volunteer. Volunteering is an important way to support the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, last year volunteers donated over 19,000 hours of their time preparing food for the hungry in the several counties they serve (Fredfood.org). There are numerous benefits to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. The mobile food pantry is one benefit of the organization. The mobile pantry program provides fresh and non-perishable items to those living in remote areas. Over 17,000 individuals are fed each month from the donations that the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank receives (Fredfood.org). That is over 204,000 hungry people fed each year. They have distributed over 3.5 million pounds of food in 2012, which in turn provided 2.8 million meals to hungry men, women, children, and senior citizens in the community (Fredfood.org). The people in the Fredericksburg, VA area benefit the most from the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. Over 53% of the individuals from Fredericksburg that are receiving assistance reported they had to choose between buying food or paying utilities. While another 7% who are elderly had to decide to spend their money on food or medication. Elderly are also on a fixed income which limits their ability in choosing (Fredfood.org). With their being a vast number of families with food insecurities to feed is why the community needs to support the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. With over 17,000 individuals utilizing the services provided by the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank monthly, community involvement is essential to help put an end to hunger.

Bigger Doesn't Mean Better

...Bigger Doesn’t Mean Better When the sun comes out in the County it is a common sight to see children running around in parks, forests, beaches, and even at the plaza. But what people don’t commonly see are the cars rolling by with young eager eyes peering out of the window wanting to run around and only to be driven to the nearest McDonald’s to be stuffed full of preservatives, empty calories, and saturated fats; then taken home to be sat down in front of a television screen to keep them occupied. Within the past 30 years, the number of overweight and obese children has tripled (Lytle), not only decreasing their life span by ten to twenty years, but creating $147 billion a year in weight related medical bills nation-wide. The increasing number of obese adults, teens, and children has reached epidemic proportions and if nothing is done about this crisis then our country will be facing a very fat problem. Knowing that the rate of obesity has increased within the past 30 years it is important to realize how it became a problem in order to resolve it. One of the culprits is the new forms of entertainment being available to the youth, namely television and the internet. With these devices people can gain consistent instant gratification in a short period of time and can easily become addicted to them hindering the likelihood of voluntary exercise. Even though the internet has only been widely popular within the past ten years, the average Americans spends approximately 52 hours...

...Chattanooga Case Study Jack Welch Management Institute Dr. Tocci JWMI 510: Leadership in the 21st Century 11/16/2014 Executive Summary The Chattanooga Ice Cream Division (CIC), one of the largest regional manufacturers of ice cream in the U.S., currently faced a major dilemma that could potentially impact the viability of the long-standing company. The division’s President and General Manager, Charles Moore, just received news from their third largest customer that they were switching to another competitor brand and therefore terminating their contract with CIC for at least two years. The customer revealed that their decision was based on variety of factors, but it was no secret that CIC had fallen behind their competition. Ice Cream consumption in general was on a steady decline and CIC found itself to be a dinosaur of brands amongst new premium and super premium brands who manufactured innovative mix-in flavored ice cream varieties, and healthier frozen yogurt options. CIC, with its production of mid-priced, basic ice cream flavors was losing its popularity. Moore calls an emergency meeting with his department leads. With just 90 days until the loss of their major client, Moore seeks the input and expertise of his top executives. To his dismay, this fragmented group of individuals engages in public conflict during the meeting and no census is reached on how the company will counter-act the loss of revenue of their third largest client. With little time to lose, Moore has...

Many parents and concerned citizen feel as if not enough time is spent preparing students for the CRCT test. The Peach County Schools Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) group meets once a month to discuss strategies on how to improve students’ academic grade which will lead to passing the CRCT test. The PTO group agrees that students need extra help outside of school. Currently, Peach County School’s does not have the funding to operate an afterschool program. To improve student’s academic grade and CRCT results a free afterschool tutoring program need to be organized. My Challenge Living in a small community where resources are limited for a tutoring program for the school-age children. All students deserve the opportunity to learn. Most of the classrooms are overcrowded. The teacher’s main focus is to teach each lesson in a timely matter which can be a struggle for most students. Research shows that well designed-tutoring programs will increase academic achievement for elementary students. Student will also show improvement in behavior and social skills. Mathematical Competence of Grade 7 Students

...The theory of Realistic Mathematics Education as a theoretical framework for teaching low attainers in mathematics Barnes, Hayley E. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/2263/4848 Date: 2005-06 ------------------------------------------------- Abstract: This article recounts the process embarked on and reasons for selecting the theory of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) as the theoretical framework in a study carried out with low attaining learners. In the study an intervention for low attaining grade 8 mathematics learners was implemented in an attempt to improve the understanding of the participants with regard to place value, fractions and decimals, and to identify characteristics of this type of intervention and potential design principles that could be applied in similar interventions. In this article, the theoretical framework for the intervention is discussed and theoretical (rather than empirical) reasons for selecting the theory of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) for use with low attainers are put forward. From a literature review that looked at the teaching and learning of mathematics to learners who fall into the category of performing below the required standard, five common aspects emerged. Once these aspects had been identified, a theory in mathematics education was sought that encompassed these five aspects. The theory of RME was subsequently selected as the theoretical framework to drive the design and implementation of the intervention and is being suggested...

...2 The Individual and Organizational Purchase Abstract Downstream of the sector, passengers buy air tickets for private or business use. Upstream, companies buy planes, equipment and services. Further upstream, plane or satellite manufacturers-integrators also buy components from their suppliers. Understanding the needs and the processes of upstream or downstream buying is the basis of marketing. This means analyzing the individual psychological, sociocultural and psychosocial factors which enter into the buying decision. The purchase context influences the buyer’s behavior. An analysis of buying behavior is also essential in Business to Business, where the purchase is not made for an individual but for a company, involving a variable number of people. To be more commercially efficient, the supplier must take into account the special nature of the industrial purchase, in particular the specific nature of the buying center, the buying process and buying situations. First we will look at the individual purchase and then the Business to Business purchase. 2.1 The Individual Purchase 2.1.1 Factors Influencing Buying Behavior Most models present factors influencing buying behavior in a hierarchical and simplified way. In fact, this classification in terms of importance of the factors depends for the most part on the context.1 For example in Muslim countries the power of religion is very important and almost certainly dominates other factors such as...

Optimization of Two Dimensional Photonic Crystal Band Gap Using Indium Phosphide(Inp)

...OPTIMIZATION OF TWO DIMENSIONAL PHOTONIC CRYSTAL BAND GAP USING INDIUM PHOSPHIDE(InP) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Staffordshire University for the degree of Master of Science in Electronics Engineering Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Technology DECEMBER 2010 ABSTRACT Photonic crystals exhibit periodic structure and these are of many types such as one, two and three dimensional photonic crystals. Photonic crystal is a low loss periodic dielectric medium. In order to cover all periodic directions the gap must be extend to certain length which is equivalent to semiconductor band gap. The complete photonic band gap occurs in the three dimensional photonic crystals. The propagation of light which is confined to a particular direction can be analysed through Maxwell’s approach. The electromagnetic wave which contains both ‘E’ and ‘H’ fields can be calculated through these equations. These field vectors are more useful in calculating band structure of photonic crystal. This report deals with the calculation of band structure in two-dimensional photonic crystal. There are many methods for calculating band structure and this thesis is mainly focused on the plane wave expansion method. This report contains the simulation procedure for calculating band structure for both TE and TM modes in the presence of dielectric medium using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) microwave studio. Results which are obtained during the simulation provide...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin.
