The Rain Came Analysis

...the skies, pretty and elegant, or a royalty in distress saved by a hero who makes her swoon, or an evil witch behind every man's failure. But a woman is not a gift, she is not a possession, she is not an asset. A woman is not someone to be saved, if she is to be protected, then from what? And yes, this paragraph is always present on my feminist articles. The most tiring thing about being a woman is the fact that we should still have to battle for our image as individuals, which is an inflection of how I came into the idea that the purpose of human kind is to breakout from the chains of the stereotypical. Humans try to debunk and destroy what exists, from beliefs to lifestyles and even to the right color of pants to match your socks. This urge to be free is the reason why Jose was shot in a park, why Romeo and Juliet died, and why all the revolutions and wars occurred. Grace Ogot or Grace Emily Akinyi, the Kenyan writer who happens to be the author of the story 'The Rain Came' and many other stories, presented the "Breaking-out" moment through the characters' struggle against the binding chains of traditions and culture. Many of her stories are set against the scenic background of Lake Victoria and the traditions of the Luo people. Luo people are interesting, in fact too interesting, specifically their traditions. They don't practice the common ritual of circumcision for males; instead they pull out 6 frontal teeth as a sign of initiation towards manhood. And these traditions...

...Cat in the in rain My assignment will contain an analysis of the short story: “Cat in the rain” written by Ernst Hemmingway. In my analysis and discussion I will focus on literary modernism and the lost generation, what typical features of the period, of the generation and of Hemingway’s style we see in the text, besides the text in from the 1920’s. The story is written in third person omniscient narrator, who deals with several different characters appearing in the short story. In the story we follow a couple and particularly the woman, and her vision on the relationship between her and her husband. She deals with many different issues, which appears in the way she is described throughout the story, and by the way she interacts among the other characters. The couple is on vacation in Italy, where they are staying at a hotel. The story takes place a rainy day. The American woman is looking outside the window, when she suddenly sees a cat hidden under a table from getting wet by the rain. She decides to go outside, to save the cat. On her way, to rescue the cat from the rain, she comes across the padrone of the hotel. He sends a maid out to help the American girl. When they gets to the table, where the cat were suppose to be, it was strangely enough gone, in proportion to how strange it is for a cat to walk into the rain, when they hate water. When she returns to her room, she is al of the sudden sad and annoyed. Without knowing why, she just wanted the cat so bad. When she...

The Rain Came - Grace Ogot

...Many of her stories are set against the scenic background of Lake Victoria and the traditions of the Luo people. One theme that features prominently within Ogot's work is the importance of traditional Luo folklore, mythologies, and oral traditions. This theme is at the forefront in "The Rain Came", a tale which was related to Ogot in her youth by her grandmother, whereby a chief's daughter must be sacrificed to bring rain.[16] Furthermore, much of Ogot’s short stories juxtapose traditional and modern themes and notions, demonstrating the conflicts and convergences that exist between the old ways of thought and the new. In The Promised Land, the main character, Ochola, falls under a mysterious illness which cannot be cured through medical intervention. Eventually, he turns to a medicine man to be healed. Ogot explains such thought processes as exemplary of the blending of traditional and modern understandings, “Many of the stories I have told are based on day-to-day life… And in the final analysis, when the Church fails and the hospital fails, these people will always slip into something they trust, something within their own cultural background. It may appear to us mere superstition, but those who do believe in it do get healed. In day-to-day life in some communities in Kenya, both the modern and the traditional cures coexist.” [17] Another theme that often appears throughout Ogot’s works is that of womanhood and the female role. Throughout her stories, Ogot demonstrates an interest...

Romeo and Julier

...Poetry assignment By: Bleon Acquainted with the night By: Robert frost I have been one acquainted with the night. I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain. I have out walked the furthest city light. I have looked down the saddest city lane. I have passed by the watchman on his beat and dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet When far away an interrupted cry Came over houses from another street, But not to call me back or say good-bye; And further still at an unearthly height, A luminary clock against the sky Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right. I have been one acquainted with the night. Analysis The man in this story has walked at night a lot. He’s walked both away and back, probably his home, in the rain. He has walked out in to the city, and past the lights, maybe out of the city, and he’s looked down lonely, dark streets. The man has walked by a watch man, and look at him because he didn’t want to say why he was there, not even with a glance. The man stops because he wants to listen to a voice calling from the other street. He hoped the voice was calling for him. The man looks up at a clock, which probably is the moon, he was not satisfied with the time it showed. He ends by referring to the first line of the poem. I picked this picture for the poem because it connects so well with the poem...

The Rain Came

...Below is a free excerpt of "The Rain Came by Grace Ogot: Analysis" from Anti Essays, your source for free research papers, essays, and term paper examples. Grace Ogot was born in Kenya's central Nyanza district in 1930. Much of her fiction stories are based on customs, history and traditions of the Luo tribe which is the second largest ethnic group in Kenya. They lived for the most part near Lake Victoria. The Luo migrated from the Nile region of Sudan around 15 century. Originally they were pastoralists but later became fishermen and farmers. The story is set in Kenya, where the Luo tribe had settled near Lake Victoria. The village was facing a severe drought and was in desperate need for rain. The tribe strongly believed in the role of their ancestors as being gods. They also believed that a sacrifice was needed in order to please the ancestors so that they may have rain. They all believe in the word of the medicine man, and blindly believed in what the medicine man has told them. He had told Labong'o that Podho the ancestor of the Luo had told him to tell Labong'o that a young woman is to be sacrificed. He then describes the woman and how to recognize her. Even stronger then that was their belief in the ancestors. We can see the strength of their belief in ancestors as in the time of great need they turn to the ancestors "So the chief had daily prayed with the Almighty through the ancestors to deliver them form their distress." The uppermost...

Manzana Insurance Fruitvale Branch

...| Syndicate Assignment | Manzana Insurance Fruitvale Branch | Operations | | | 01 June, 2016 | | | Manzana’s Position in the Insurance Industry Manzana has a history of seeing opportunity and seizing it. Manzana has grown through acquisition. Manzana's main competition is Golden Gate Casualty. They beat Manzana on both price and performance. Golden Gate tied with Manzana for first place in the property insurance market in 1988. By 1991, Golden Gate announced they could guarantee turnaround time (TAT) of one day. If they fail to reach that benchmark, they offer a 10% premium discount. Manzana must at least match that promise to stay competitive in this market. The current TAT for request processing has bloated to five or more days at a time. This report will recommend a number of strategies to improve the system in operational efficiencies, measurement and service. Manzana has an opportunity to increase their business through decreasing their TAT, adjusting staff incentives and delighting their customers. The acquisition of Manzana by Banque du Soleil has helped. There was a restructure that resulted in a leaner company. Underwriting standards have tightened, operating expense has reduced and this has resulted in a regain of market share. After the restructure, they are now better geared toward the property liability insurance market. Manzana now specialise in commercial insurance rather than personal insurance. That has pitted them against Golden Gate...

Down to a Sunless Sea Analysis

...Down to a Sunless Sea analysis The story written in March 22nd 2013 by Neil Gaiman is somehow about the river called The Thames, which flows through southern England, more specifically through the capital, London, which is where the short story takes place. The perspective of this story is narrated by the writer, so the reader does not get to know everything but are limited. This story deals most with a woman without any given name that has lost her son and husband to the big sea. We find her to walk at the Rotherhithe docks, which she has done for decades, but nobody cares about her, yet she still starts to talk every time someone passes by, but she does not talk to the person, she talks to the rain which flows into the Thames River. “And then she sees you. She sees you and she begins to talk, not to you, oh no, but to the grey water….”(P.2, 13-14) This gives the reader an idea of her being a little crazy, because she talks to the rain and the river, which in any way cannot respond. She had a son who wanted to be a sailor, just like his dad. The woman does not like it, because she had already lost the father because of the sea. He went and never came back, so the mom does not want the son to go, but he does, and he does not come back either. She seems to be a loving mother, but has gone crazy because of her loses, yet her stories are very interesting for the protagonist, and he/she keeps listening to the story even though it is raining. My Morher and Her Sister

...Analysis and interpretation of: “My mother and her sister”: “My mother and her sister” is a short story about enjoyment of life. The story is written by the first person narrator, who has just lost her mother. We never hear that is a woman, but I assume she is because she is feeling guilty in connection with aunt Lucy. Her approach on happiness with a happy marriage, seems to be feminine. A man wouldn’t care that much about serving a food. Lucy is the sister of the narrator’s mother. Luce is 75 years old. Lucy was married for 49 years but now she is a widow and she is a mother for five children. All her life she used to be a home mom, who made homemade jam, knitted for the children and always made homemade dishes for the family, waited a daddy who came home from work. The narrator’s mother was different from her sister, she learned her children to live them life with free view on life: “We learned from our mother that nothing is more important than your freedom, and that familiarity breeds contempt” (line 13-14).Lucy after her sister’s funeral stays with the narrator. Now Lucy has become elder and her view in life completely changed, she do the same things every day, she doesn’t like to talk, eat healthy food, to go out: “She doesn’t like the rain and refuses to go out, even shops.” (line 36-37). The narrator things that owe to Lucy because she and her brother Tim spent most of the summer holidays at her house with her boring children. But they didn’t had other chose...
