Abstract

NRS-429V Family-Centered Health Promotion students were required to take a questionnaire about their learning styles. The study-VARK- outlined the four learning styles: Visual Learning, Aural, Reading and Writing, and Kinesthetic. VARK helped tell students their strong points and their weaker ones that the student need to improve.

This essay is about this essay’s writer’s learning style, strategies, and the VARK learning strategy guide. This essay will go into depth with the writer, ways a person can improve their learning strategies, their learning styles, and other learning style. The writer thinks it is important that learning styles is thought about often, because it could help you with tests, essays, and homework assignments. It helps to know a person’s strong points, and know to strengthen your weaker points, so a person can pinpoint ways to help them flourish in their studies. The learning style mainly used by the writer are reading and writing. This helps when there is a hard homework assignment or essay comes up and when the writer is unsure on what to do. The writer starts by reading the material that was given to the writer of this essay. Having a reading and writing learning style helps improve writing, because this writer sometimes rewrites things to get a better grasp on it. The writer also proofreads her work to see if there are any mistakes in spelling, grammar, or punctuation. The learning strategies the writer uses involves reviewing things by writing things out, rereading material that either was homework, or given to help with the test, saying things out loud if it is confusing, rereading things that are confusing or hard to understand after only read once. When the writer is confused about something, something that the writer does is look through her older notes or the internet, after verifying that the website is reliable and offers true information. The writer’s learning strategies are similar and somewhat to the identified strategies for her learning style. The VARK guide recommends writing out words again and again, reading notes again and again, rewriting the ideas and principles into other words, organizing any diagrams and graphs into statements, turning reactions, actions, diagrams, charts, and flows into words, and to convert your notes into a learnable package by reducing them. The writer’s learning strategies involve some of these things, but it also rules out some of these things because she have tried it, but they were not useful to her. An example of something that does not work for the writer, is rereading material again and again. The writer can reread something once or twice to review it, but rereading the same thing over and over again gets confusing and causes the writer to start to doubt herself or the things she had learned when it is time for to take a test, or when a homework assignment comes. Another learning strategy that does not work for the writer is when she has someone explain something and they tell her very rushed. It causes the writer to not understand. The writer also has a hard time when someone explains something without going into depth and give a not very detailed description on what the writer and the person has learned. The writer has to change some of her study habits, for instance, not reviewing enough material. When looking for material, the writer limits herself to some websites, when really, the writer should look for more to help with the assignment or test, rather than just being satisfied with a couple of websites. The writer needs to try to involve these study strategies with her usual ones. Another change that needs to be done is to get out of just the strategies and style the writer has. The writer needs to develop her skills more for things like visual learning, kinesthetic, and aural. The writer can develop her skills for visual learning by making flashcards and highlighting things to catch her eye when she reviews later. The writer can be more aural learning by trying discussing the things the writer learned with other students or people who understand the topic more than she does (Oryx Press, Study Strategies). A way the writer can improve being aural is taping notes after writing them (Fleming G., Learning Styles). The preferred learning style is the way in which a person can learn best. The effective learning strategies can improve a persons learning skills that can lead to the success of that person, but trying out new study strategies can one day possibly be the one thing that pushes a person‘s grade to be higher and better than what it could have been. The writer believe that, her learning style is her strength in achieving good grades and success. The writer will keep her usual study habit, but improve them, so they can help her in the future and lead her to success.
