The Rise and Fall of Four Loko

...Clifford Colvard BUS-491 The Rise and Fall of Four Loko 1. All beverages are dangerous when consumed in large quantities. In the late eighties and early nineties, a beverage named Cisco came under scrutiny when many individuals succumbed to alcohol poisoning after imbibing the fruity alcoholic beverage. It was packaged in a fashion that some claimed to look like wine coolers. Nonetheless, the Canandaigua Wine Company, the manufacturer of Cisco, settled with the Federal Trade Commission to change the shape and color of the bottle and give a strong reference that Cisco is not a single serve beverage (http://www.ftc.gov/opa/predawn/F93/cisco.txt). This is a situation where Caveat Emptor is appropriate. Manufacturers often mimic packaging of more popular brands and I am fairly confident that the high dose of caffeine in Four Loko was a sought after characteristic by it consumers. In this case, Four Loko became the whipping post for overzealous parents and politicians, upset because their child was irresponsible. 2. Four Loko had a socially redeeming purpose apparent by the consumer demand. From a libertarian standpoint, individuals collectively coalesce with others who share similar values and interest to form a culture in which they choose their own socially redeeming qualities. Products often become synonymous with communities, a group of people bound by a common interest; therefore, Four Loko had the potential to represent a sub-culture, just as Harley-Davidson...

Four Loko - Capitalism and Business

...Textbook case study 3.1. The Rise and Fall of Four Loko 1) Are these drinks as dangerous as the critics maintain? How much of the problem is due to the high levels of caffeine, how much is due to the labelling and marketing and how much is caused by irresponsible behaviour on the part of the young drinkers? Are companies like Joose and Four Loko being singled out for social problems that are much wider in scope, in particular, alcohol abuse by young people? These drinks have been proven to be as dangerous as claimed because they contain caffeine, which is a stimulant hence keep you awake, while being mixed with alcohol, which is a depressant that slows down the body and brain; together this ‘tricks’ the mind into thinking that you are awake and ready for more alcohol. The cases of New Jersey students being hospitalised due to “serious alcohol poisoning” proves the real potential risks of consuming this beverage. In the case study it states that the caffeine content was boosted from 54mg to 156mg and had 12 percent alcohol, and these figures may not appear to be very high but after multiple drinks in a short amount of time it adds up and most young people simply do not acknowledge or care about these numbers. Personally, I do not think that the under-aged or young people who drink are to blame because it is common for people growing up to be curious and to experiment with things like this, however, there needs to be more work done on the education and awareness of alcohol...

Capitalism and Business

...Capitalism and Business . The Rise and Fall of Four Loko 1. The alcoholic content of each can of Joose or Four Loko is 12% which is almost double the dosage comparing to the usual can of beer that is 5%. The caffeine content added to Joose and Four Loko are 54mg and 156mg respectively. Though insignificant comparing with a regular cup of coffee which is between 100-200mg, it is lethal when both elements being combine in a drink that subconsciously keep you awake with the caffeine while denying your mind to provide you the signal that you are drinking too much. The drinks were labeled colorfully with different fruity favour that set out to entice young (underage) drinkers who may find similarity with what they were drinking but laced with alcohol & Caffeine. What made it worse was that the drinks were associated as non alcoholic drinks by non drinker or children who might consume it while left unsupervised at home The irresponsible behavior as highlighted in the case studies were littering, aggression and over drinking which generally are associated with young drinkers. It was mentioned $5 was enough to be intoxicated all night, thus cost will not be a problem for the young drinkers. Their marketing strategy, involving explicit labels, fruity favours and low cost to get intoxicated were set out to target young drinkers. The moral justification of capitalism is obviously lacking in these companies and it was natural they were being singled to be punished for by social...

...the Four Loko alcoholic drink, acted between 2005 and 2010 in regards to their operation within the caffeinated alcoholic drink market. The paper will review the FTC and FDA legal issues specific to 2010 that were filed against Phusion Projects. There will be 3 different ethical theories used to determine how the company morally acted in their choices. The ethical theories that will be used are Utilitarian, Kantian, and Machiavellian views. Finally, we will review how Phusion Projects handled their social responsibilities. We will be limiting the focus of the paper to the decision to operate within the caffeinated alcohol energy drinks and the marketing decisions made by Phusion Projects. Their actions were important because they forced the government to ban the niche market they had worked so hard to operate within. To better understand the case we have included this brief overview of the market and specifics to Phusion Projects and the Four Loko product. Phusion Projects was formed in 2005 by a group of 4 friends. They chose to enter the alcohol energy drink market based on current drinking trends at that time. Red Bull and vodka was very popular and a new market introduction from Sparks in 2002 had a growing market. Phusion Projects introduced a similar beverage with a slightly different flavor and began marketing to college students in the Midwest. The first products did not have the success they were looking for and they eventually introduced the Four Maxed...
