The Riskiest Profession

On September 11, 2001, the day started normally in the World Trade Center. In the Twin Towers the usual number of employees was 14,154. Approximately 14,000 people were present at the time the first commercial aircraft hit the North Tower. American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 8:46:40 a.m. The aircraft cut a swath through 8 floors–from the 93rd to the 100th–as it hit at about 450 miles an hour. At least 60 people jumped from the North Tower rather than burn to death. One firefighter was killed after being hit by one of the jumpers.
Not only is this unfortunate, but also we lost many people, and some of them were firefighters at the World Trade Center. The firefighters never had a chance to put out the fire because it was a high-rise fire. A high-rise fire can only be extinguished from inside the building because no ladder truck and no stream of water can reach that high, making it the most dangerous type of fire to fight. In many cases, the only hope is that the building remains standing and the fire burns itself out. However, the firefighters took risks to save a number of people. Also, many firefighters were too tired to keep moving during the search and rescue operation. Some of those did not want to face the danger again of the crashing building. They were scared to go in but had to go, even if they had to sacrifice themselves because of their responsibility. As many people illustrate, firefighting is the riskiest profession in the world for the following three reasons: they must sacrifice preparation in some emergency situations; they must be ordered to keep the operation work effective even though they are too fatigued to move; and they must deal with the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Firefighters must

...1. What major challenges and problems did you face? How did you handle them? 2. What is your greatest weakness? When I'm working on a project, I don't want just to meet deadlines. Rather, I prefer to complete the project well ahead of schedule. Being organized wasn't my strongest point, but I implemented a time management system that really helped my organization skills. I like to make sure that my work is perfect, so I tend to perhaps spend a little too much time checking it. However, I've come to a good balance by setting up a system to ensure everything is done correctly the first time. I used to wait until the last minute to set appointments for the coming week, but I realized that scheduling in advance makes much more sense. 3. What is your greatest strength? Importance of Reserch in Education

...I stated m caee in an The Challenges Facing Beginning Teachers New teachers bring varying backgrounds, motivations, experiences, and preparation levels to their initial teaching experience. Their view of the profession and their role in it is shaped by these motivations, as well as by the context in which they begin their work. This chapter explores the commitments that new teachers bring to their roles and the challenges they face. It sets forth the need for the development of a comprehensive induction program to help all new teachers become fully committed and more effective in the classroom. A CASE OF BEGINNING TEACHING Anna was a first-year teacher in an urban school. Although Business was her undergraduate major, she found her initial foray into the business world to be very unsatisfying. She wanted a career that would allow her to make a contribution to society. She heard about the need for teachers— particularly for math teachers—in her area. Not being quite sure what she needed to do to become eligible to work in a teaching capacity, she attended a recruitment fair put on by the local school district. There she heard about the program that would allow her to begin teaching while she completed work on a teaching credential through a district-led or a university-led alternative certification program. 1 Bartell 01.qxd 7/21/04 5:45 PM Page 1 After taking a test that measured her “basic skills” (reading, math, and writing), she was sent on some interviews at several middle...

Beta (Finance)

...Beta (finance) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search In finance, the Beta (β) of a stock or portfolio is a number describing the volatility of an asset in relation to the volatility of the benchmark that said asset is being compared to. This benchmark is generally the overall financial market and is often estimated via the use of representative indices, such as the S&P 500.[1] An asset has a Beta of zero if its returns change independently of changes in the market's returns. A positive beta means that the asset's returns generally follow the market's returns, in the sense that they both tend to be above their respective averages together, or both tend to be below their respective averages together. A negative beta means that the asset's returns generally move opposite the market's returns: one will tend to be above its average when the other is below its average.[2] It measures the part of the asset's statistical variance that cannot be removed by the diversification provided by the portfolio of many risky assets, because of the correlation of its returns with the returns of the other assets that are in the portfolio. Beta can be estimated for individual companies using regression analysis against a stock market index. ...An assessment of the implications for competition of a cap on auditors' liability July 2004 OFT741 1 1.1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report contains the OFT's advice to Government on the implications for competition in the audit market of proposals to permit auditors to limit their liability by way of negotiated caps. The current liability position 1.2 At present auditors may not limit their liability for fault due to negligence or incompetence in audit work. Alongside regulation and reputation, liability acts as a discipline on audit quality in a context where shareholders and other third parties rely on information from an audit which is paid for by the company being audited. We are not aware of evidence suggesting that the courts in the UK have made, or are liable to make, excessive damages awards against auditors. Professional indemnity insurance is available, and LLP status – the chosen corporate form of many audit businesses – exists to protect partners' personal assets. The competition arguments 1.3 It has been argued that a cap on auditors' liability would however be procompetitive because it would lead to: • • • 1.4 a reduction in the barriers to entry and growth facing smaller audit firms the maintenance of competition between larger audit firms, including for non-audit work, and less risk of collapse of one of the Big Four. On the basis of the evidence available to us, however, none of these arguments appears compelling. First, the current liability...

Battered and Beaten

...J. Bradford DeLong Battered but Not and Beaten J. Bradford DeLong U.C. Berkeley October 29, 2010 Is This Really Our Proper Timeline? This talk has turned out to be rather more of a selftherapeutic exercise--or perhaps a call for psychological help--than is appropriate for this conference. But you go to the conference with the talk you have, and not the talk you wish you had. So let me start. These days I wake up. Blearly-eyed, I stumble down the stairs. And while I am eating my wheaties the macroeconomic situation hits me. And I stop, with the spoon halfway between the bowl and my mouth. I then find myself thinking: 1 J. Bradford DeLong This cannot be real. This has to be some horrible mistake, some dystopian alternate timeline--like that Star Trek episode with the transporter malfunction and evil-Spock-with-a-beard... And then I stare unproductively at the wall for a while as I try to piece together how exactly we got here. What I Was Saying Two Years Ago Last week I went back and looked at all of my talks from the fall and winter of 2008. Back then I was ringing changes on three themes: 1. We are in substantial trouble: the collapse of the housing bubble triggered a mortgagefinance crisis that snowballed into a general financial crisis and a flight to safety that would, if unchecked, produce the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression itself. 2. Normal stabilizing monetary policy tools cannot help us any more. The standard policy moves we...

Global Financial Crisis

...Global Financial Crisis: The 2007–2012 global financial crisis, also known as the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), late-2000s financial crisis or the second "Great Recession", is considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s.[1] It resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. In many areas, the housing market also suffered, resulting in numerous evictions, foreclosures and prolonged unemployment. It contributed to the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealth estimated in trillions of US dollars, and a significant decline in economic activity, leading to a severeglobal economic recession in 2008.[2] The financial crisis was triggered by a complex interplay of valuation and liquidity problems in the United States banking system in 2008.[3][4] The bursting of the U.S. housing bubble, which peaked in 2007, caused the values of securities tied to U.S. real estate pricing to plummet, damaging financial institutions globally.[5][6] Questions regarding bank solvency, declines in credit availability and damaged investor confidence had an impact on global stock markets, where securities suffered large losses during 2008 and early 2009. Economies worldwide slowed during this period, as credit tightened and international trade declined.[7] Governments and central banks responded with unprecedented fiscal stimulus...

The negative consequences of this financial crisis had bitten the Egyptian economy in many fields. Egypt’s growth rate witnessed setbacks and may have posted its slowest annual growth in half a decade in 2008–2009 as the global crisis hit revenue from tourism, migrant labor remittances, the Suez Canal, export revenues, and investment. The severity of the crisis and its uncertainties demonstrated the need for urgent action to restore financial stability, lead the economic recovery and secure a sustainable future for the country. This paper therefore critically discusses the current global financial crisis and its impact on Egypt. It presents an overview of the Egyptian economy prior to the crisis, followed by an assessment of the depth and impact of the crisis on sectors of the Egyptian economy. Additionally, the paper highlights the actions taken by the Egyptian government to weather the effects...
