...Response to “The Road” In our class for our final, we watched the Movie “The Road” after reading the novel in class. Most of the times a film version of a book is either a hit or miss with the audience. A lot of times readers think the film spoils the image they had created in their mind while reading, but other times the film will exceed your expectations and be very good. In this essay I will explain whether or not I liked the film, what parts I thought were very similar to the book, and which parts helped me understand the story more clearly. First of all, I liked the film version of “The Road” a lot better than I liked the novel. The film was much easier to follow. While reading the book, I found it hard to follow along because of the unique writing style that McCarthy used. This style made it hard for me to focus, and made me become easily distracted. The film version, however, was much better. It was filmed in a traditional manner, which made it much easier to follow along. The main difference I saw was the language usage. In the novel, the man and the boy talked in weird, abrupt sentences. This was one of the main reasons it was hard to follow. In the film, they spoke in more normal English, and that made it easier to follow along, and kept my attention better than the book did. Throughout his career he has written ten novels in different genres. One of the most prominent genres in his literary work is post apocalypse. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Road. Some of his novels have been made into movies, such as; The Road, No Country for Old Men and All the Pretty Horses. Short plot summary The Road is a book about a journey of a father and a son through a post-apocalyptic landscape. The story is set a few years after an unspecified apocalypse which has destroyed civilization and most life on the Earth. Many of the human survivors have resorted to cannibalism and thus gruesome and immoral actions take place. Throughout the whole book we are not told the protagonists’ names, they are referred to as the man and the boy. Throughout the story the man and the boy meet a few people. The first people they run into are cannibals and they get away just in time. Other than that they almost run into other dangerous people and cannibals, fortunately they always hide and get away. Confused about which road to take, the traveler speaks figuratively about how each path looks and in the end decides to take the path he calls “less traveled by” (line 19). Each person in life comes across crossroads where he or she has to choose which path leads to a better future. The reader can take what Frost wrote and interpret that this poem represents that decision that we eventually have to make. One of the major themes of this poem is “life’s decisions” because the author creates a scenario where people have to make a decision of which road to take in life.
