“We judge ourselves by our intentions; Others judge us by our behaviors. We don’t see our behavior, other’s don’t see our intentions.” In Anthem they live for the group and anything done for yourself is evil. The higher powers are afraid of others’ skill sets and how they could affect the way of life. When Equality reveals his talents, the higher powers put him away in the street sweepers and later on in jail. All because of his behavior and how he defies society. However Equality 7-2521 has different ideas about why we live life, and who we should be living it for. In the first chapter he is already breaking laws, being defiant. He knows what he is doing but it does not seem to matter to him. I thought this was important because on page 16 it says, “The laws say that men may not write unless the council of vocations bid them so. May we be forgiven!” (pg 17) and although he asks for forgiveness, if this wasn’t important to Equality he wouldn’t be breaking the law. He shows integrity throughout the story because as he develops his individualism he also doesn’t quit on his dream or his ideals. As he starts breaking more laws, to get to his goal, he gets into some trouble. Midway through the story, Equality is beaten because he was somewhere and wouldn’t tell where he went. He shows the bend not break mentality when he shows his individualism through his integrity. After when the council throws Equality in jail he escapes still striving to pursue his dream and make a difference to
