Valjean is irrationally sent to prison because he stole a loaf of bread to save his dying nephew. Before he was sentenced to penitentiary he was a nice and caring man, however being confined for such a minor crime caused him to grow bitter and hateful. Upon being released from prison on parole Valjean begins to notice how no one will even give him a chance at a job. However, one individual known as Myriel, the bishop, gives Valjean the benefit of the doubt. Instead of punishing Valjean for robbing him, he shows him compassion.
