The Running Man
Research task:
1. Use the library non- fiction collection or the internet to find examples of early Colonial art. Are the depictions of people, animals and the landscape accurate? If not, why do you think this is so?
In many of the examples of early Colonial art the depictions of the people, animals and landscape were not truly accurate. An example of this is the landscape is often depicted looking green and lush with rolling hills and valleys similar to an English landscape. As most of these examples of art were intended for the English or European market and were often used in published accounts of voyages of discovery it was depicted to not look harsh and unforgiving but filled with exotic looking natives and beautiful wild flowers.
2. Raising silkworms:
Silkworms go through four stages of development, as do most insects: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The adult (imago) stage is the silkworm moth. The larva is the silkworm caterpillar. Since the silkworm grows so much, it must shed its skin four times while it is growing.

Silkworm Life Cycle

How is silk made? : When the silkworm forms a covering around itself by producing a protein through its head, this is called the cocoon stage. This is the most desirable stage for the silk producers. It is at this time that the cocoons are delivered to the factory by the farmer. These factories are called filature operations. Once the cocoons reach the filature operations they are sorted by colour, size, shape and texture. They usually range from white and yellow to greyish. After the cocoons have been sorted, they have to be boiled in water, while they are still intact, for 5 minutes while they are being turned gently. They are then taken out of the water and a dissecting needle is used to start picking up the strands. Once a single strand is found that will come off easily it has to be wound around a pencil. This silk must then be packed into small bundles called books. These are then shipped to silk mills around the world.
3. Who was M.C. Escher? What did he do? When?
Maurits Corneils Escher is one of the world’s most famous graphic artists and his art is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. He was born June 17th 1898 in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands and died March 17th 1972. Escher spent a number of years travelling through Europe, while his interest in graphics grew. In 1921 he got married and lived in Rome, Italy. At the time, his works depicted landscapes using impossible perspectives. Escher is most famous for his so-called impossible structures, such as Ascending and Descending, Relativity and his Transformation Prints, such as Metamorphosis I, Metamorphosis II and Metamorphosis III, Sky & Water I and Reptiles. 4. How was Australia involved in the Vietnam War?
The Vietnam War began on November 1st, 1955. It was a war that was fought in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The communist forces wanted to expand their territory to include these countries. The war began due to opposing political agendas. North Vietnam had adopted communism and did not want to become a communist state. South Vietnam was an anti- communist government and did not want to become a communist state. The South Vietnamese government sought assistance from the United States and her regional ally, Australia. Both countries responded civil and military aid. Australia’s contribution was small in comparison to America’s, but sufficient to show loyalty to the United State, Australia’s most valued ally.
Australia’s initial military contribution to South Vietnam was modest; comprising a team of 30 advisers who worked in various areas of the country under the command of Colonel F.P. ‘Ted’ Serong. The Vietnam War was the longest major conflict in which Australians have been involved; it lasted ten years, from 1962 to 1972. In the early years Australia’s participation in the war was not widely opposed. Involvement in the war cost more than 500 Australian servicemen their lives, while some 3000 were wounded, otherwise injured or were victims of illness. For Australia the Vietnam War was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent since the First World War.

Weaker Sex

...sniveling. A woman is the opposite: tough, constant, enduring, level and calm under the pain to which her biology exposes her. On the average she is more patient than a man. Armed with these advantages, women are in a position to do endurance feats previously considered by men to be impossible."(Noakes 598)  Not many sports exist in the world today in which women can be competitive with men. Although this is not true with many other things in life, it has always seemed that males dominate the sports world, no matter how hard women have tried to break through this. Upon taking this class, I thought I had found such a sport. From quotes such as the one above by Dr. Ernst van Aaken and other findings in the class text books, I developed the thesis that Ultra Marathon Running might be just the sport for women to show their ability to best men in sports arenas that which they had previously been excluded from. As I look deeper into this statement, I realize that there are many different ideas and theories on this topic. Many women say, "Yes, of course women can compete with men", while men tend to laugh at the question and scoff at even the thought. So my question remains unanswered, can women of the ultra species compete with males?  In 1971, American woman, Natalie Cullimore surprised the all male ultra world by running a 16:11 for the one hundred-mile race. Not only was she second in the race, but this was the fourth fastest time for a male or female at this distance. She caught...

Acceleration vs Time

...the man walks slowly to the house from the origin. On the Position-Time graph, the line is a positive consistent rise. This is because his position is going in a positive direction as well as the time is going in a consistent positive direction. On the Velocity-Time graph, the line is straight across at 2 m/s because the velocity does not change because of the consistent speed of the man walking to the house. Since the velocity is constant the acceleration is zero. On the Acceleration-Time graph, the line is flat and straight across at the 0 m/s line because the man does not accelerate. He just walks at a consistent pace to the house. This is called constant speed because there is no variation in his speed. * On the second example, the man is sleeping then wakes up and runs toward the house constantly speeding up as he goes. On the Position-Time graph, there is a positive upward curved line. This is because both are moving in a positive direction but because he is running, the position is rising faster than the time. This upward curve indicates an increase in velocity. On the Velocity-time graph, the line is a straight consistent rise. This is caused because the man is running so the velocity is rising throughout the graph, as is the position. A positive slope indicates a changing velocity which is a positive acceleration. On the Acceleration-Time graph, the line constantly rising because the man is running, constantly speeding up. * On the third example, the man steps...

Position Time Graph

...PROCEDURE: Begin by making charts like the one below for each of the following a-d a. The man walks slowly to the house from the origin. Position –Time Graph The moving man starts at a position of -8 meters and is accelerating at 1 m/s 2. He starts with a velocity of 0 m/s. After 1 second, he will be going 1 m/s (remember acceleration is 1 m/s per s so velocity will change by +1 m/s with each second that elapses). So after 2 seconds, he will be going 2 m/s, etc. If you carry this motion out with moving man, you see it will take him 4 seconds to get to the origin (a position of 0 meters), or equivalently to move +8 meters from where he started. At 4 seconds, he will have a velocity of 4 m/s On the Position-Time graph, the line is a positive consistent rise. This is because his position is going in a positive direction as well as the time is going in a consistent positive direction. Explanation for graph’s appearance –after actually performing the activity. Velocity-Time Graph On the Velocity-Time graph, the line is straight across at 2 m/s because the velocity does not change because of the consistent speed of the man walking to the house. Since the velocity is constant the acceleration is zero. Explanation for graph’s appearance - after actually performing the activity. John Searle's Chinese Room Argument

...John Searle is an American philosopher born in 1932 and attended Oxford University. The Chinese room argument is Searle’s way of refuting the Strong A.I. thought that running an adequately complex program is sufficient for thinking by showing how running a computer program is not sufficient for the computer to be thinking. The argument goes that a person who has never seen the Chinese language in any form is sitting in a room sealed from the outside world. In the room, there is a basket full of Chinese symbols and a book that shows what symbols to put together when responding to a group of symbols on a piece of paper that has been slipped into the room by a Chinese speaker. The man in the room following the instructions can trick the Chinese...

The Chase

...children have a different point of view when making decisions. In football, adults think giving it your all to escape getting hurt is ironic but the narrator thinks kids can relate to it. The irony shows a contrast between kids perspectives and an adult’s perspective. Another key symbol is age. A man who was well dressed, in his car experienced snowballs being thrown at his car. His first instinct was to run after the kids, and that’s what he did. Society thinks, just because you’re not as young as some people, doesn’t mean you aren’t capable of doing what they can. Children and adults have different ways of thinking, such as kids thinking more creatively and carelessly. Kids do not think about the consequences for their actions until it is to late. “The point was that he had chased us passionately without giving up, and so he had caught us.” The chase gave the kids such a thrill running away, that it didn’t faze them that the man was yelling at them. Even though the kids were listening to him, they could not stop thinking about how much fun it was to run way from the man. It was more fun having an adult run after them opposed to another kid because its uncommon to see an adult running 10 blocks after a few kids who threw...

You Were You

...jukebox becomes jealous. The dream ends when she wakes up to people coming to help. The whole poem is very vague and lacks in details, meaning this poem can be interpreted in many different ways. By examining “You Were You” closely, one could understand that the man and woman were once together; the break up leading to a downhill disaster of a woman who once held meaning, but now resorts to drugs to escape the reality of her old lover moving on. In this dream the woman imagines herself as a jukebox. This metaphor gives the reader a broader view of the situation at hand. The speaker is immobile and unable to interfere with her previous lover. His new woman forcing her to suffer through watching the man move on. By putting herself in the place of a jukebox, she tries to bring back the past by playing songs that her and her past lover once enjoyed. While she observes the man, she announces that she “played Sam Cooke for [him] but [he] didn’t look over once.” This statement implies that she is doing all that she can to be noticed and remembered by the man. This also proves that the woman knew the man well enough to know his tastes in music because she obviously thought playing this song would get him to look at her, but the man did not look over and this hurt her. The woman notices that he was “wearing [his] best smile and the shirt that makes [his] eyes green”. This is a clue that these...
