Olson Band Saw General

...How to Choose the Correct Band Saw Blade Width Blade width is measured from the tips of the teeth to the back edge of the blade as shown above. The instructions for the particular machine being used should be followed when selecting blade width. If no such instructions are provided, blade width should be determined with the following guidelines: • For Cut-Off Sawing , the blade should be as wide as the machine will allow. The wider the band is, the straighter the cut will be. Faster feeding can be achieved. • For Contour Sawing , the blade should be as wide as the machine allows, but still narrow enough so that it can cut the desired shape (radius), Minimum dimensions for different cutting radii are shown in the chart below. How to Choose the Correct Band Saw Blade Style and Set Band Saw Blade Tooth Shape Styles The most commonly used tooth shape. Ideally suited for both cut-off and contour sawing of most materials. For cutting thin materials where a fine cut is required. Widely spaced teeth with a 0° rake angle to prevent clogging when cutting soft, non-ferrous metals, plastics and wood. Positive 10° rake angle helps to "digin", resulting in a higher cutting rate. Recommended for long cuts into thicker wood, plastic and metal. Band Saw Blade Tooth Set The raker tooth set consists of one to the left, one to the right and one tooth (raker) is unset. This set is used for cutting thick, solid metal sections on horizontal cut-off machines. It is also used for...

How a Magician Saws a Woman in Half

...How a Magician saws a woman in half Everyone has seen it, whether it was on T.V. or on stage, a magician introduces a beautiful assistant and then proceeds to shove her into a box, pull out a saw, and cut her in half in front of the entire audience. Some people call it magic, I will tell you the secret behind this mystifying stunt. The first thing the magician does is introduce the set, there is a large box sitting on a platform and his assistant. The magician opens the box, his assistant climbs in and all that is showing is her head, her feet and maybe even her legs. The magician then continues to close the box and turn to the audience. Now what you don’t know is that in the platform under the box there is another assistant that the audience doesn't know about. So when the magician turns to the audience he will then preform some mumbo jumbo magic stuff like saying some words or waving a wand. Then he will casually block the first assistants feet from view by either blocking it with another miscellaneous prop for a moment or by rotating the box, this gives his first assistant enough time to pull her feet in and the second assistant to poke her feet out, wearing the same shoes of course, the magician then grabs the saw blade and makes a cutting motion through a pre cut line in the box. Then the magician will split the box in half revealing the middle and amazing the audience even more. Then he closes the box does whatever he does to cover the legs and then opens up the box...

Explore and Examine the Genre Convention for Saw V

...he film Saw V is within a series of films all directed by David Hackl. Saw can be put into many genres, but I feel if i had to pick any particular genres they would be Thriller (Psychological Thriller), Mystery and Crime Fiction. In this essay, I will be discussing these genres and their conventions in order to support my views in deciding what genre of film Saw is. Various genres will also be discussed throughout the rest of my essay. The low key lighting is conventional in a Saw V as the dark shadows help to create the mysterious scenes and the tension as we as the audience feel shadowed and unaware of what is going to happen. It is used multiple parts of the film, so it emphasises their constant danger in the specific situations that they are in, which creates a higher suspense level and makes the audience in a continuous vulnerable position which is how a thriller is aimed to make them feel. Another convention to Saw V, is innocent victims are made vulnerable, and either made to be murdered or go through a series of unfortunate events. It is natural to expect many murders or jumpy scenes in Saw V to make the scenes more terrifying and heart stopping. In the movie we see many of the victims in the "survival of fitness" trying to fight for their life's. At the end of this specific scene one man is horrifically blown up, therefore murdered. The victims are made to look like normal everyday people, which makes the scene to be more relatable to real life, as the aim is to...

...Egg cup holder   First of all, I clamped the acrylic in a bench vice with two pieces of wood either side of it just to make sure it would not scratch the acrylic. The acrylic that I used was rough around the edges so using  flat file I Cross filed to get rid of any saw cuts and draw filed it to get rid of any scratches made from the cross filing until the scratches were gone all around. I then got wet and dry paper and used grade 1200, 600 and 400 grits to make the surface finish smooth and shiny, it also gets rid of any dirt and grain left after the filing from the edges. I slowly brushed my fingers across the edges to see if the surface finish was smooth I left the protective plastic on the acrylic so I could mark out the centre of the 4 sided shape, then I used the pillar drill to cut out the circle on the Acrylic.   Health and safety is very important in the making stages so I made sure I was wearing my apron and goggles so I could protect my clothes from any spillages such as the water from wet and dry and also protect my face from any bits of acrylic or wood chips that could fly out during the drilling. After the drilling, I used a template to mark out where I needed to bend the acrylic to actually form the shape off an egg cup holder. I used a strip heater to bend the acrylic, I placed the piece of acrylic on the heater where I marked out the line and kept flipping the piece of acrylic every few seconds so the acrylic didn’t melt. I quickly removed the acrylic and...

5star Tools Case Study

...BUS5431 - Managerial Accounting Individual Case Study 7-2 FIVE STAR TOOLS James Jiambalvo – Chapter 7 Case 2 Submitted by: K Greene Executive Summary: Five Star Tools is a small family-owned business that manufactures diamond-coated cutting tools (chisels and saws) used by jewelers. The production of these tools involves three major processes. The first of these processes involves steel “blanks” (tools without the diamond coating) that are cut to size. The second process involves the blanks being sent to a chemical bath that prepares the tools for the coating process. The final process is the major process in the line. The blanks are coated with diamond chips in a proprietary process that simultaneously coats and sharpens the blade of each tool. Following the coating process, each tool is inspected and defects are repaired or scrapped. In the past two years, the company has experienced significant growth and with that growth has come some growing pains. The company finds itself at capacity in the coating and sharpening process. This process requires highly skilled workers and expensive equipment. Because of growth a bottleneck has been created by this operational process and this in turn has cause the company to miss delivery deadlines on orders from several important customers. Maxfield Turner, the son of Frederick Turner, founder of Five Star Tools, president of the company is having a discussion over lunch with Betty Spence, vice president of marketing...

...house. We were walking in the cold slimy mud, in the lashing rain holding boxes of different fruit and vegetables from Uncle Pete’s farm. We walked past the Stevens’ house and around the corner, past Aunty Maple’s shop. I was feeling tired from holding the heavy boxes, Jack saw me struggling and helped me. Jack was a fast walker but even with the amount of heavy boxes he was holding, he was still ahead of me. As we were a few blocks away from our house we heard the shooting of bullets and stomping. I put the brown boxes down carefully, trying not to spill any of the fruit or vegetables and stuck my head around the corner, curious of what was happening. There was a big crowd that gathered around something or someone but it was hard to see. I moved closer for a better look. I saw soldiers standing straight, chest out and serious faces looking straight ahead, though it didn’t seem like they were looking at something. Another one of them was standing on a chair; he was a dull green uniform with a lot of badges so you could tell that he was in charge. I saw Jack in the distance trying to push past the crowd, eager to know what was going on. The soldier in charge was speaking about the war. I looked at Jack and saw the concentration on his face, his round eyes looking straight at the soldier, standing there as still as a statue. He and all the other men were shouting in unison, answering all the soldier’s questions. That’s when I had a feeling that things were going to change. Hours...

Five Star Tools

...Five Star tools is a small business that produces diamond coated cutting tools such as chisels and saws used by jewelers. The company produces these tools in a 3 step manner. The steel is cut according to size and is finally coated with diamond for effecting cutting for jewelers. Recently the company has been doing well and receiving a lot of order but some of the orders have not been completed due the limitation in the coating and sharpening process. The problem with the coating and sharpening process has caught the eye of the vice president Maxfield Turner and Betty Spence, vice president of marketing. They are concerned that they will be known as unreliable if they continue to miss order deadline. The task ahead of them is to figure out what steps can taken to loosen the constraint in coating and sharpening. The best to solve the problem faced by Five Star Tools is to deploy the Goldratt five steps system to maximize profits. The first steps in solving the problem is to figure out what the constraints are. And in the case of Five Star Tools it is the availability of production resources. Second the company should try to produce Model C120 as it only takes 0.2 hours in the coating department. Thirdly managers should focus on trying to loosen the constraints, and should implement various strategies in order to reduce the idle time of workers. Finally the constraints can be eliminated by using the latest equipment in the coating process, by automating the process and...

Advanced Knife Sharpening

...1 COMM101 TECHNICAL WRITING ADVANCED KNIFE SHARPENING TECHNIQUES INTRODUCTION As the amounts of disposable income for the average family have fallen with the decline of the economy, people have become much more selective about where they spend their money. The restaurant that takes advantage of recent innovations in kitchen gadget technology to save themselves money could pass the savings to their customers and build their business in hard times. Growth being the goal of every business, it is essential that we research and implement any innovations which could give us such an advantage. CURRENT KNIFE SHARPENING METHODS Currently, our kitchen uses two different approaches when sharpening our knives which are: periodic sharpening by a local knife sharpening company and hand-held sharpening stones used to hone the edge when necessary. Both of these methods have advantages and disadvantages. ADVANTAGES OF PROFESSIONAL SHARPENING All of our knives are sharpened at the same time: when the knives are returned, all of them are sharp and ready for immediate kitchen use The blades are honed to a razor edge: all of our knives are as sharp as the day they were purchased Edge lasts for a long time: if not abused, the edge stays sharp for three weeks on average DISADVANTAGES OF PROFESSIONAL SHARPENING No periodic touch-ups: the sharpening company will only sharpen our knives on our scheduled date Two day turnaround time: we deliver our knives on Saturday...

Strategy Essay

...Strategy Essay – Week 2 This week’s essay focused on finding a company that seems to be following a ‘parallelism’ strategy and assess whether it is working for them in terms of profit and response to environment. Beinhocker describes Parallelism as having multiple experiments allows you to take risks without ‘betting the farm’. The company I researched is called Grace Manufacturing, they took a radical step in changing their industry and product but a remarkable stroke of luck opened a new market for them and they managed to move and adapt to maximise the opportunity presented to them and taken on board this strategy moving forward. Grace started out in the 1966 as a contract manufacturer of etched steel parts, such as printers. They had developed a proprietary process for making precise steel shapes, which meant the edges of the steel being razor sharp and patented the process. However, sharpness was a liability and workers had to be careful handling the parts. With the emergence of dot matrix printers in the 1980’s, they realised their cash cow business was under threat and so looked into different areas. Grace didn’t take the natural progression to looking at adjacent areas such as dot matrix printers or other high volume complex machine pieces. Instead they realised they were good at making things sharp, so went into woodworking tools and developed the microplane in 1985. Grace had some success with the woodwork tools but in 1995 a new product category opened up for them...
