Personal Statement

My name is Adwoa Blankson, I am currently in my second career as a critical care nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Prior to becoming a nurse, I worked as a case manager and a child and family advocate in social services in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, for more than ten years. I worked with children, youth and adults with social, emotional and behavioral problems. My first bachelor’s degree was a BSc in Psychology and Sociology. Throughout my professional experiences, I have demonstrated intellectual and personal attributes that have made me successful in my career. I have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, which enables me to provide individualized and holistic care to patients and their families.
After twelve years in social work, I pursued and successfully completed an accelerated 15-month bachelor’s degree in Nursing at New York University in May 2011. I made this decision because I wanted to continue caring for people in the medical field. An experience with a family member who had cancer, brought me frequently to the hospital and clinical setting, and this solidified my decision to become a nurse. In the past couple of years as a bedside nurse, I have developed strong interpersonal and psychosocial skills especially in taking care of cancer patients and their families. In this patient population, active listening is crucial and I can strongly boast of being an active listener to my patients. This is evident because families who had loved ones passed on within the past two years continue to share with me the positive impact I had on their lives while they were in my care.
I am pursuing this graduate degree to obtain the knowledge and skills required to provide nursing care at an advanced level. Thus, my goal is to become a family nurse practitioner, to care for patients across the life span. With this

The Sweet Smell of Success Isn't All That Sweet

...Confronting Failure, Achieving Success Close your eyes and visualize what it would be like to be rewarded in an intense science competition being applauded by numerous people with a spotlight shining on you. For some, this is one kind of success that they aspire to. Of course success can be interpreted from different perspectives and shown in different ways; however, people seem to agree on the fact that successful people must have well-paid jobs, gorgeous houses, and tasty meals in various fancy restaurants, but not Laurence Shames. In his article"The Sweet Smell Isn’t All That Sweet", he argues against the typical idea of success and claims that you should set your goals at an almost unattainable height. Even if you fail at the end, you would fail in a beautiful way and attain something greater, being a step closer to the ultimate target. Moreover, as a student, it's perfectly normal to have failures, because we are all learning. In order to achieve Shames's idea of "success", a student should accept failure as a positive instead of a negative and be determined to obtain his or her desires in life. Firstly, throughout college, students must confront failure bravely, which can ironically sometimes leads to success. For example, students in the science department are often assigned to do many lab reports and experiments and they always want to try something different. However most of time new lab results do not turn out as expected or the whole experiment fails due to...

Australian Ethics in Engineering

...The Australian education system which has been operating in Australia since European settlement has been unsuccessful in meeting the needs of Indigenous Australians. There is a long history of educational inadequacy where Aboriginal Australians are concerned. With a comprehensive understanding of the difficulty Indigenous children face in terms of acquiring an education in our education system, it is now possible to recognize particular techniques which may be used in an attempt to counteract or minimise troubles caused by feelings of discrimination amongst Indigenous children. We believe a problem with Aboriginal schooling retention rates is that the students don’t feel captivated or that the content being taught applies to them, and therefore they don’t care for education. We believe our education strategy needs to focus on correcting this by teaching the truth and history about colonisation and developing awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture. By incorporating Indigenous teachings into the curriculum, we will engage students and improve school completion rates. A good education determines many factors in an Indigenous child’s health, literacy, employment and productivity. It is widely believed that Aboriginal children learn best and most efficiently when educated by a culturally aware teacher, preferably an Indigenous teacher. Aboriginal teachers bring a bigger range of cultural perspectives into schools and develop relations with the Indigenous communities around...

You Are What You Think

...You are what you think The truth about life is the truth about ourselves. If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. In life, we go through many battles, not necessarily the real ones, but the battles with our own problems and others around us. Here we will see a little how to have strength, know ourselves better and then apply the knowledge to life. It is really important to know ourselves, to know how we will react to the challenges we face, and to have a good image of ourselves, since we are what we think. First, it is important that we have a good example to look up to and learn with. We will talk about heroes as they are a good example. A hero is a person who does something special, or out of the ordinary in order to help others. It could also be someone who is admired for a characteristic about them, be it physical or mental. They are individuals that normal everyday people can look up to. This being the case, a superhero is nothing more than someone who helps many people. We have always looked up to our heroes. Some of us become heroes and that is thanks to the strength we take from them. They are great examples for kids and grownups. The humanity should keep taking the good things heroes have to share with us, and apply them in our lives. Second, “Having control of yourself”, is very important. Then we know how to control ourselves, our fears, and our excitement. We shouldn’t be blocked from doing something...

Food and Culture

...Kyimari Reeves Food & Culture Dr. Daryl White December 12, 2014 My Family’s Culinary History: A Multigenerational History and Autoethnography When you think of or smell a certain food, what comes to mind? On one hand, the sight or smell of that food might trigger hunger, or even a memory of the last time you shared that meal with a loved one. The smell or sights of our favorite foods trigger a different thoughts or feelings in each of us. This is an example of Semiotics. Semiotics is defined as "anything that can stand for something else." Roland Barthes was one of Europe's most renowned theorists of semiology. Barthes believed that in order to generate a complete sign, there were two parts that have to work together. These two parts are known as the signifier and the signified. A good example of this is the favorite food we thought of earlier, it would act as a signifier, and the thought that came to your head when thinking of this food would act as the signified. For some, that equates food memories. My family and I have created many food memories for us as well as followed the foodways crafted for us by previous generations. Coming from a rather diverse ethnic background, we have different variations of traditional African American foods. I have many memories of family reunions and all the interesting dishes my relatives would prepare. But when it came to certain meals my mother was very traditional in preparing it, and it had to be done a certain way or it was...

Will the Web Kill Colleges

...“Will the Web Kill Colleges?” Will the Web Kill the Cupcake Business? Marlo Thomas In “Will the Web Kill Colleges?” by Zephyr Teachout (Chaffee, p. 91), the author is trying to argue that traditional brick-and-mortar schools will be replaced with online-base learning. The strongest point being made is that because of economic changes, the economy is slowing down, fewer learners wanting to take out student loans and aid being cut to universities; it will be more cost-effective for them to implement online-base learning. These classrooms are easy to manage and navigate for learners, with the plethora of access to resources online such as, “…access to videotaped lectures, full courses, free articles, openly available syllabi online—as well as books that can be searched and borrowed from libraries around the world.” (Chaffee, p. 91) It is also noted that online courses are at a cost savings that are drastically lower then living on campus. Five years ago, close to 4-million learners participated in at least one online learning experience, those numbers are probably double that in 2012. Even right now, every person in this the Capella MBA program is doing this very same thing, learning online. The schools shifting to this new model of learning are ones that middle-income and lower-income learners attend, state schools and local community colleges. Those state schools and local community colleges are experiencing heavy...

The Lorax and Ecocentrism

...Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax (1971) is argued as one of the most important pieces of environmental children’s literature, with educators expressing the work, “as a powerful story for teaching and learning, as a story that can promote transformational ideas in educational practice,” (Henderson, 2004). This high praise begs the question: why is The Lorax so successful at reaching out to the child reader? This essay will indentify the use of certain literary characteristics that Seuss incorporated in The Lorax, which stemmed from successful environmental children’s literature from the late seventeenth century to the twentieth century. It will establish the success of each work due to the theme or agenda it had that reflected the social and environmental issues of its time, and will then establish to what extent Seuss’s The Lorax stands as a strong example for ecocritics and educators alike, of an environmental children’s story and its impact on the child reader. To further understand the position of this paper, it is important to identify the nature of ecocentricism and the development of the interdisciplinary field. Ecocentricism is an ethical practice that “decenters humanity’s importance in nonhuman nature and nature writing and instead explores the complex interrelationships between the human and the nonhuman,” (Buell, 2011). The practice, in the last twenty years, has become a field of inquiry in response to “growing academic concern about the response of literature and literary theory...

Rhetorical Devices in Freakonomics

...Lucy Dineen Ms. Remmey Freakonomics Assignment August 2015 Argument: What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? Based on Paul Feldman’s findings, the authors of Freakonomics argue that a person, who is faced with an efficient way to cheat, will not necessarily choose to. The data involved in Feldman’s accidental bagel study proves that not all humans are corrupt. However, their tendency to cheat alters based on several factors, such as the characteristics of the person, the value of the incentive, and the impact of the setting on the person’s mood. 1. Metaphor- “He had thrown off the shackles of cubicle life and made himself happy.” (Levitt/Dubner 45) 2. Juxtaposition- “But in the big-office/small-office comparison, bagel crime seems to mirror street crime. There is far less street crime per capita in rural areas than in cities, in large part because a rural criminal is more likely to be known (and therefore caught).” (Levitt/Dubner 46) 3. Allusion- “Because many of Feldman’s customers are affiliated with the national security, there may have been a patriotic element to this 9/11 effect.” (Levitt/Dubner...

The Impact of Social Performance - Unilever and Its Environmental Responsibility

...The impact of social performance - Unilever and its environmental responsibility Unilever is one of the world largest multinational companies, merged by British soapmaker Lever Brothers and Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie in 1929, which is related with lives of over two billion people every day mainly in the area of food and beverage, home care and personal care. The corporate purpose of Unilever indicates that they require "the highest standard of corporate behavior towards everyone we work with, the communities we touch, and the environment on which we have an impact (Purpose & principles 2010)". This corporate purpose highlights the importance of social performances and the interactions with their shareholders. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is increasingly essential in the global environment (Wilburn 2009, 111), especially for large multinational companies who confirm that making contributions to shareholders is the driving force to increase the value of the corporations. Unilever claims that corporate social responsibility is at the heart of its business (Cescau 2007). “We've always believed in the power of our brands to improve the quality of people’s lives and in doing the right thing. As our business grows, so do our responsibilities (Our vision 2010)” Unilever has made a clear direction about their vision. These years Unilever has focus on building their corporate image with full consideration and improvement of social performance, varying from...

Bariatric Surgery

...Professor Wooten English 111-1371S 12 June 2014 Negative Side-Effects from Bariatric Surgery Attending a bariatric conference, Dr. Bartels, a bariatric doctor and lawyer at Bartels Medical Associates, PLLC, once told me that, “Surgery shouldn't be someone's first option into losing weight, unless the individual is morbidly obese and the only viable choice is a surgical intervention.” He also stated that, “Some people are born with an abnormally large heart, and they need a smaller heart to make them better. If people were born with an abnormally large stomach, then I would see the need for needing a smaller stomach.” Bariatric surgery has grown in popularity over the last decade and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, especially since most healthcare insurances cover the procedures after meeting lax qualifications. Currently, the two most popular surgeries are roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) and the adjustable gastric band (AGB). Even though these surgeries offer the same outcome, they do come with different post surgical side effects. Parents of obese children and adolescents are beginning to take notice of the benefits of bariatric surgery. With longterm studies of the surgeries still being performed, it is cautioned for pediatrics to utilize this form of treatment for obesity due to their ongoing need for growth and development. It's not just the longterm studies that should be of concern either, it's also the preoperative deficiencies that can become exacerbated...

They strive on their quality and ability to produce always fresh never frozen bratwurst, breakfast sausage and patties as well as their recently launched Vivio Italian brand of sausage. The Vivio brand never received the attention that it required however now with the Italian sausage market growing annually at a rapid pace they have hired Ann Banks to create a marketing plan and launch the Italian sausage product properly. Ann decided to keep the name Vivio Italian Sausage but add that it was from Saxonville because everyone knew their reputation of quality, healthfulness and freshness in their pork product. In addition to the name of the brand Ann added “ A family tradition for 70 years” to the label giving the product an emotional feel for the potential consumer. The target market that was chosen was the “Home Maker Mom” due to the research provided by the Director of Market research Laura Bishops.
