The tale of Saartjie Baartman has everything to do with race relations, as her story exemplifies racism and discrimination. In the eyes on many Saartjie was seen as a commodity and was looked down upon morally, socially and considered inferior in every way. What lead to her exploitation was a British ship doctor who promised her fame and fortune. However, rather than riches and fame she found humiliation. In Europe she was forced to be a spectacle, considering European men had never seen or known what a naked black woman’s body looked like. Men all over the country where fascinated by her large breasts, big hips, buttocks, and big lips. They all stared, laughed, and touched her because she didn’t look anything like a white woman. The torment went further when she was later sold to a circus, where she was forced to dance naked for the entertainment of white people. In their eyes her large breasts, buttocks, and elongated labia deemed her oversexed therefore the abuse was not perceived inhumane. When Saartjie was no longer wanted in the circus she became a prostitute and later died from disease. Having no value or self worth from the treatment she endured, she began abusing herself by becoming a prostitute. As a result of the hardships she endured, she died at the tender age of twenty-five. The torment did not stop there; even after she died Europeans were still fascinated and obsessed with her physical nature. Immediately after she died her vagina, brain, and skeleton were cut out and preserved in jars. They were later placed on display along with a plaster of her actual body. For years individuals were able to walk into a museum and see what Saartjie Baartman looked like naked. While years later the museum took down the display they still kept her remains. It was not until President Nelson Mandela fought to have her remains brought back to her homeland, where she
