It happened a few days before her freshman year of high school started. Kevin, her brothers best friend, was practically family. One night he destroyed all of Eden’s trust in him within a matter of four minutes. The book The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith tells the story of Eden (Edy) McCorey and how she deals with overcoming rape. Edy is a medium height, not too skinny but not too fat, teenage girl. She has thick, black, wavy hair. It falls down to just below her shoulders. Her bangs are long enough to reach behind her ears. Her eyes are a dark, shiny brown. They have a broken type of look in them. Her ears are pierced and she wears tiny, shiny studs everyday. She wears not too much makeup but not too less; mascara and lip gloss. She wears jeans that fit her just right, and a simple T-shirt with a cardigan. She didn’t always look like this, but after her freshman year of high school, she decided it was time for a change. …show more content…
But I don’t blame her because of what happened to her. She acted all tough and normal on the outside, but inside she was crumbling down to nothing. She was really tough, even if it didn’t seem like it. She’s not afraid to speak vigorous words, telling people what she thinks. But she has her limits to what she can say. She begins to not know how to deal with being raped, and her friends start not liking how she’s dealing with it because they sense changes in her attitude. She loses all her friends, but not forever. She felt quite desolate, but she’s unquestionably tenacious. She was brave because she was able to walk around not being terrified all the time. Sure, she was afraid sometimes, but not all the time like some people might

Eddie Adams from Torrance

...Eddie Adams from Torrance: Finding Family in P. T. Anderson's Boogie Nights All human beings at some point believe they are extraordinary or at least special in their own way. Often, individuals do nothing with these special abilities or talents, leaving those opportunities from being pursued. But there are others who are so bold as to take a chance and see where this talent might take them. Eddie Adams was one of the latter. He took the bus from Torrance, California to work in Reseda as a bus boy. Sure he could probably find the same job back home, but he is in search of something grander than what's offered in Torrance. He works at a club in Reseda to be around people who are living lives of glamour. Eddie wants this for himself. But what Eddie is searching for is not exactly what he finds. In P.T. Anderson's Boogie Nights (1997), Dirk Diggler is used as a vehicle to tell the story of several individuals, each dealing with personal struggles who don't find exactly what they are looking for but do find each other, creating a family which is essential for each character's survival. Eddie Adams if first introduced working in a night club. He is not typical. Jack notices this as the entire scene cuts from Jack's gaze to Eddie, “whose unique talent is about to be spotted and put to use” (Smith). He immediately follows Eddie to the kitchen where he questions him on his background. Here the audience sees Eddie as a young man seeking a goal. Jack asks, “So what do...

Many Meanings of a Class Ring

...LeAnna Durocher Dr. D. Smith English 1020-L04 September 11, 2015 Paper #1 The Many Meanings of a Class Ring             Protected emblem or encrusted emblem. Round cut, square cut, marquis cut or stadium cut stone. White gold or yellow gold. The decisions of how a class ring will look have endless possibilities; but it is not how the ring looks that matter but rather, the meaning behind it. Class rings signify the beginning of the end of one’s high school career and transition into college life/ adulthood. When I thought about what to put on my class ring I thought about what meant the most to me in high school. I also thought about classes and groups of interest that helped me get to where I was at that point in school. When it was my turn to create my ring I chose three main things that meant the most to me; the first being the cross in the center of my stone. Believing in God helped me make it through school. When I was transitioning from junior high to high school I felt scared because I did not know what to expect. Coming from a small school into a huge high school was very over whelming I had not been in a school with so many people; I didn’t know and I did not know how to open a locker. Mid-way into my junior year my Grandpa was diagnosed with cancer and my grades began to drop tremendously. I ended up failing chemistry and had to take it again in credit recovery. By the grace of God, I passed chemistry with a C. Unfortunately my Grandpa...

The Absolute

...The Absolute (and all that) When dealing with the idea of The Absolute, an understanding of what exactly is meant by the word “absolute” would be helpful, for this, we will go to a long trusted source for information, the dictionary. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the word “absolute” is defined in a number of ways: free from imperfection; free or relatively free from mixture; being , governed by, or characteristic of a ruler or authority completely free from constitutional or other restraint; having no restriction, exception, or qualification; independent of arbitrary standards of measurement; and perfectly embodying the nature of a thing, just to name a few. (Merriam-Webster) So to look at The Absolute, we are dealing with, according to Merriam Webster, an idea of freedom, purity, something set apart and seen as perfect, I would add and take liberty and say, an example of excellence untainted by anything, but does what Merriam-Webster say still bode well with how many World Religions defined or see The Absolute regarding their specific religion, that is what we intend to find out, The Absolute and all that. When religions speak of The Absolute, we would expectedly assume The Absolute of which they speak of is that of an Absolute Truth, some sort of cosmic truth, a universal truth, something without blemish, an essence or standard that is eternal, something unable to be changed, set apart by uniqueness, an idea of which there is no allowance for...

It helped kick start a revolution known as the Arab Spring. Facebook was used to schedule activities such as gatherings to protest, Twitter was used to coordinate an array of events at a moment’s notice, and Youtube was used to voice this struggle to the world. Social Media has played a major part in overthrowing governments in countries like Egypt, Libya, and Syria. Once depressed people in these countries relied on state sponsored media for their info but with the rise of social media this is no longer the case. ...Generated by ABC Amber LIT Convertera http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html Killing Dance(v2.1) Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter Book 6 Laurell K. Hamilton, 1997 Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head--a man or a monster? It's not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there's always Jean-Claude, the vampire who's been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita's head and heart. 1 The most beautiful corpse I'd ever seen was sitting behind my desk. Jean-Claude's white shirt gleamed in the light from the desk lamp. A froth of lace spilled down the front, peeking from inside his black velvet jacket. I stood behind him, my back to the wall, arms crossed over my stomach, which put my right hand comfortably close to the Browning Hi-Power in its shoulder holster. I wasn't about to draw on Jean-Claude. It was the other vampire I was worried about. The desk lamp was the only light in the room. The vampire had requested the overheads be turned out. His name was Sabin, and he stood against the far wall, huddling in the dark. He was covered head to foot in a black, hooded cape. He looked like something out of an old Vincent Price movie. I'd never seen a real vampire dress like that. The last member of our happy little group was Dominic Dumare. He sat in one of the client chairs. He was...

...are out of our control, like other people’s feelings and unforeseen unmanageable circumstance, for me this inability to always be in control is a difficult concept. You see, I am an ex-professional athlete in a high-risk sport, motocross. In motocross we like to believe that as we train and prepare we gain control of all situations and when things go north this preparation will allow us to control the uncontrollable. The difficult truth to accept is that although preparation diminished unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances, it doesn’t eliminate them and when something goes wrong. It goes really wrong. I, like many people will never come to accept that we can’t control certain circumstances and will continue to prepare ourselves and to train ourselves in hopes of controlling the uncontrolled. As crazy as this may seem however, it is people like us that develop equipment, strategies, movements and technology to get us closer to control. It is their relentless conviction to not take no for an answer that today saves thousand of life in many impossible situations with advancement such as protection and training in sports, therapy and diagnosis for emotionally unstable individuals, schools for children with disabilities and without a doubt warning and anticipation of natural phenomena situations. I think out of everything in this...

Business Assignment

...Business Studies Assignment: By Lateesha M. Year 11. Article 1: “ DICK Smith has issued a spray at the private equity firm that floated the electronics store he founded, which is now in voluntary administration. The outspoken entrepreneur said the previous owner, Anchorage Capital Partners, had “a lot of explaining to do” over its $520 million IPO, which he argued was drastically overvalued. And he called on those who benefited to step up and guarantee customers the money they are owed for deposits, gift cards and undelivered goods. “They most certainly should be refunded,” Mr Smith told news.com.au. “Some of the people who made a fortune out of the recent float, they should pay back those people who’ve put down deposits. “The company could not possibly afford to be that indebted, or have that value on the market.” Anchorage bought Dick Smith Electronics from Woolworths for $94 million in 2012, then floated it for $520 million just 15 months later. With the troubled retailer now in administration, customers left out of pocket by Dick Smith’s meltdown have been lumped together with all its other unsecured creditors. This means they are unlikely to recoup the full amount of what’s owed to them. Dick Smith’s bankers have appointed Ferrier Hodgson as receiver, which plans to put the business on the market. In a blow to customers, Ferrier Hodgson this morning released a statement confirming that it would not honour outstanding gift vouchers or refund deposits paid...

Weak Interaction

...Article pubs.acs.org/jcim Carboxyl−Peptide Plane Stacking Is Important for Stabilization of Buried E305 of Trichoderma reesei Cel5A Chunyan He, Jingfei Chen, Liaoyuan An, Yefei Wang, Zhiyu Shu, and Lishan Yao* Laboratory of Biofuels, Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao 266061, China S * Supporting Information ABSTRACT: Hydrogen bonds or salt bridges are usually formed to stabilize the buried ionizable residues. However, such interactions do not exist for two buried residues D271 and E305 of Trichoderma reesei Cel5A, an endoglucanase. Mutating D271 to alanine or leucine improves the enzyme thermostability quantified by the temperature T50 due to the elimination of the desolvation penalty of the aspartic acid. However, the same mutations for E305 decrease the enzyme thermostability. Free energy calculations based on the molecular dynamics simulation predict the thermostability of D271A, D271L, and E305A (compared to WT) in line with the experimental observation but overestimate the thermostability of E305L. Quantum mechanical calculations suggest that the carboxyl−peptide plane stacking interactions occurring to E305 but not D271 are important for the carboxyl group stabilization. For the protonated carboxyl group, the interaction energy can be as much as about −4 kcal/mol for parallel stacking and about −7 kcal/mol for T-shaped stacking. For the deprotonated carboxyl group, the largest interaction energies for parallel...
