Several months ago the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) placed a solicitation for a one year construction contract to build a ten story office building for the FAA in the downtown area of Washington, DC. My company, Bell Construction, Inc. was awarded the $8 million contract in December of 2010. Our contracting officer, John Blair was responsible for administering the contract and ensuring that we met the completion date of December 30, 2011.
My company officially started the project on January 2, 2011. The project went well for a couple of months considering we had our occasional bad weather of snow, rain and high winds but we had more than enough time to complete the project. As time went on the contract started to experience a couple of bumps in the road in terms of minor delays which were caused by the government or shall I say our contracting officer John Blair.
In May of 2011, John informed us that the project will be delayed because the paperwork on his end was not complete and for safety purposes needed to halt the project. I found this to be totally unprofessional and unacceptable. Four months into the project and the foundation has been laid along with three levels of the building having already been completed and he was now concerned about our safety. John did not provide us with a reasonable timeframe as to when the work will restart or if we will be given an extension for completion. He asked us to standby for a couple of weeks until he gets more information.
This project is very important because my company’s resources are tied specifically to this contract and due to the uncertainty of completion it would be risky for me to take on other projects and possibly lack manpower when this project starts back up again. Although, the project is delayed we still have a contract with the government for completion unless they decide to terminate it

10 Ways to Build a Business Culture Like Apple

...10 Ways to Build a Business Culture like Apple One of the big advantages of being an entrepreneur and starting your company from scratch is that you get to set the culture, which is much easier than changing the culture of an existing business. The challenge is how to do it, and how to do it right. Why not learn what you can from companies like Apple, who are leading the way with great growth and a great culture? Jim Stengel, in his latest book “Grow: How Ideals Power Growth and Profit” chronicles a ten-year study of the world’s fifty best businesses, including Apple, and concludes that those who centered their businesses on a culture of improving people’s lives had a growth rate triple that of competitors in their categories. Here are ten culture building principles, adapted for startups from this study, that I believe have the same potential for tripling the growth and survival potential of your entrepreneurial efforts: 1. Communicate your dream and operationalize it. Mission statements tend to be narrow, business oriented statements such as “Be the leader in customer satisfaction.” Your dream and your company culture needs to be outward focused with a higher good, extending beyond the company’s financial interests. 2. Be clear about what you stand for, inside and outside your company. Your personal priorities, values, and principles set the culture. The best way to be clear about them is to regularly engage team members, customers, and suppliers. People follow what...

...Evaluate ways in which David could assess how PCL’s marketing activities assist in the achievement of its business objective. (13) Marketing is the management process that identifies, anticipates and satisfies customer needs profitably. It ensures a business has the right product, at the right place, at the right time and at the right price. If David wants to assess whether something works the best way to find out is through market research. Market research can be used to evaluate the success of marketing activities that David has already conducted, this will allow him to see whether they are helping the business achieve their objective. There are two methods of market research which are primary and secondary, primary research is research that has not yet been conducted and have to be done by the business, this is a more expensive and time consuming method of research but gives more specific results as the business can find out exactly what they want to. Secondary research is research that has already been conducted which means it is usually free and a lot less time consuming that primary research, although it may be hard to find the specific research data you wanted and the data may not be up to date. PCL’s current objectives are to meet their business principles and increase demand, increasing demand is not specifically mentioned in the case study as an objective but he is looking to take over another business and question two of the exam asks to discuss the appropriate pricing...

How Would You Justify Spending Time and Money on a Business Analysis of Your Company? Can Such an Exercise Really Pay Off in Ways That Make It Worth the Effort?

...Module: Business Analysis and Assessment Week: 06 Discussion Question Name: Sahr Dauda Date: 18 July 2012 Question: How would you justify spending time and money on a business analysis of your company? Can such an exercise really pay off in ways that make it worth the effort? Analysis, as summed up from my readings, can be regarded as a clinical and structured decomposition of a subject into its constituent parts with the aim of acquiring salient information and deeper understanding of the said subject and to offer robust solutions for improvements. It is thus a process that is inherently iterative and involves, as proffered by Williamson et al., (2004), lots of research to gain deeper insight into the business which encompasses all aspects of the business and its environment. In short, it is a holistic process that unearths the secrets of the business and identifies areas needing attention. It thus seeks to find answers to questions like where is the business now, what does it do and how does it do it, where does it want to go and how can this be achieved (Williamson et al., 2004). Yes, it consumes time and money but insights so garnered from the analytical process leading to formation of strategies will give the business a favourable competitive position and superior profitability. To reduce time and money spent, analytical tools are used to aid in the process, besides bringing structure to it. Note here that only the right necessary tools are used, as a few too...

...In today’s uncertainty economic climate, UK’s economy’s growth in long period has stopped and has been in recession since July 2008. This was caused by key global problems such as rising in commodity prices, house price bubbles, volatility in financial markets and of course the credit crunch. These give a great impact on the business sector. Reduction orders or demands have led to closure of many companies across all sectors. Small businesses are struggling to access the capital needed to stay open, pay debts, maintain payroll and expand operations.  The problem is worse for those looking to get into business for themselves for the first time. The Federation of Small Business indicated that about 280 small companies are going out of business every week during this current economic downturn. Why do we need to recover the small business sector? Small and medium enterprise or SME play a vital role in the economy, providing new ideas, products, services and jobs. The UK’s 3.7 million SMEs account for approximately 40% of UK’s gross domestic product or GDP and have an annual turnover of one trillion pounds. Giving jobs over 12 million people in the UK, they also account for 85% of the 2.3 million extra jobs created by new businesses in the private sector between 1995-1999 and more than half of the 3.5 million jobs gained from expansion over the same period. International Franchise Association mentioned that small businesses offer the best opportunity to promote a strong economic...

Employees Employees are a very important stakeholder within Mercedes Benz as they have 270000 employees that are working around the world. As Mercedes Benz are a very large organisation this means that they have many different types of employees that work for them. All these employees have a part in the business but they do not share the same amount of influential power to change the direction of the business. This is because some employees are directly involved in the decision making for the products and some are just obliged to follow the orders.
