The Consequences of Racial Discrimination on African-Americans in Cleveland

...Discrimination in Cleveland: The Consequences of Racial Discrimination on African-Americans in Cleveland Abstract Discrimination is not something that can be rationalized by any argument, but we can track down the consequences of it for African Americans in Cleveland. Our ancestors a century ago laid the ground work for a segregated city by the lake and split it right down the middle with the Cuyahoga River. The east side of Cleveland has been where African Americans lived with the injustices of discrimination against them for a century now and while discrimination is not still potent, you can see the consequences it laid out for the African American community today. While some argue that discrimination has nothing to do with lack of employment or deplorable housing situation, the real truth is that the people who discriminated against them created these circumstances for African Americans. Discrimination in Cleveland: The Consequences of Racial Discrimination on African-Americans in Cleveland Consider the following scenario: A country formed on freedom and rights of individuals eventually deeming one race of individuals as unworthy of those freedoms and rights. This certain race would not be worthy of equal opportunities eventually leading to costs in the quality of life for this race for centuries. It is a curious outcome that an entire country could be built on uplifting ideals and then have double standards in its belief system. This is a scenario that unfolded...

...Klamath County Community Health Western Governors University Klamath County has many health needs and is at risk for high mortality and morbidity. Heart disease is the leading cause of death followed by cancer and chronic respiratory disease. (The Healthy Communities Institute, 2013). Smoking, obesity, and poor air quality are all contributing factors to these health risks. Also, as the general population continues to age pre-existing medical conditions, chronic health problems and weakened immune systems increase the areas aging population's susceptibility to influenza and pneumonia. However, only 57.8% of adults over 65 received an influenza vaccine in Klamath County (The Healthy Communities Institute, 2013). And unfortunately access to healthcare remains woefully unsatisfactory in the County. Lastly, and most heartbreaking, is that the child abuse rates in Klamath County are among the highest in the state (The Healthy Communities Institute, 2013), while conducting the County Health Survey these three critical areas of concern have become painfully evident. All three issues should be addressed according to the Health People 2020 goals that have been set forth to improve the health and well-being of all Americans (Healthy People 2020, n.d.). WINDSHIELD SURVEY Klamath County, Oregon, is the Southernmost County in the state, boarded by California to the South, the Fremont National Forest to the East, and by the Deschutes National Forest to the North and West. ... but during the depression the company had lost so much he was forced to leave. Using the $200 he earned from redesigning an engine for Herbert Henry Dow, John opened his new business, with electric motors of his own design as the main product (Buller/Schuler, 2006). During that first few years the company grew but had some setbacks, which include a fire in the first year of operation. In 1906 John incorporated his business and moved it from a fourth floor room in a factory he was in, to a newly constructed three-story factory. He then expanded his work force and the sales grew to over $50,000 a year (Buller/Schuler, 2006). In 1907, John’s brother James joined him as a salesman and to help manage the company, as John preferred to be more involved in the inventing stage and less in the management of the products and company (www.lincolnelectric.com/corporate/about/history.asp). Over the next few years the product line was expanded to include battery chargers for electric cars, and in 1909 the first welding set was produced. Then in 1911 the company introduced a variable voltage, single operator, portable welding machine, and the very first in the world (www.lincolnelectric.com/corporate/about/history.asp ). ...INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS WHAT IS ETHICS Ethics is a major branch of philosophy, encompassing right conduct and good life. It is significantly broader than the common conception of analyzing right and wrong. A central aspect of ethics is "the good life", the life worth living or life that is simply satisfying, which is held by many philosophers to be more important than moral conduct. Simply put, ethics involves learning what is right or wrong, and then doing the right thing -- but "the right thing" is not nearly as straightforward as conveyed in a great deal of business ethics literature. Most ethical dilemmas in the workplace are not simply a matter of "Should Bob steal from Jack?" or "Should Jack lie to his boss?" (Many ethicists assert there's always a right thing to do based on moral principle, and others believe the right thing to do depends on the situation -- ultimately it's up to the individual.) Many philosophers consider ethics to be the "science of conduct." Philosophers have been discussing ethics for at least 2500 years, since the time of Socrates and Plato. Many ethicists consider emerging ethical beliefs to be "state of the art" legal matters, i.e., what becomes an ethical guideline today is often translated to a law, regulation or rule tomorrow. Values which guide how we ought to behave are considered moral values, e.g., values such as respect, honesty, fairness, responsibility, etc. Statements around how these values are applied are sometimes called moral or ethical...

Like many American policies, U.S. Middle East policies are driven by a special interest lobby. However, the Israel Lobby, as it is called today in the U.S.[1], consists of vastly more than what most people envision in the word "lobby." As this article will demonstrate, the Israel Lobby is considerably more powerful and pervasive than other lobbies. Components of it, both individuals and groups, have worked underground, secretly and even illegally throughout its history, as documented by scholars and participants. And even though the movement for Israel has been operating in the U.S. for over a hundred years, most Americans are completely unaware of this movement and its attendant ideology – a measure of...
