When I was a senior in high school, football was my life. I consider myself to be a pretty good defensive player. Georgia Southern College had just opened up their new football program and I wanted to attend there as well as play football for them. However, I did not know the application process of applying to Georgia Southern College or any other higher institution of learning. Instead of me asking for help via my high school counselor, football coach, or my parents, I never pursued my Dream of going to college or playing college football. Therefore, college plans took a backseat in my life and job hunting became my priority after graduating from high school.
As I began my job search, my neighborhood peers always talked about pursuing employment as a Longshoreman located at the Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah, Ga. Becoming a Longshoreman was known to many of us in my neighborhood as a good paying job with benefits such as medical/dental insurance, union association protection, workmen’s compensation, etc. I was then sold on becoming a Longshoreman until one day; my father came home and spoke with me about college again. He stated he knew a Lieutenant Colonel at Fort Valley State College who was the head instructor over the ROTC program. My father explained to me the application process of completing the college’s application and returning it to the college along with a money order for the application fee. Needless to say, I never received any correspondence back from Fort Valley State College or my refund. I never contacted the College to inquire about my application, but instead I became discouraged. After my disappointment, I decided upon what I called a Plan B and proceeded to take the necessary steps to join the military.
