Thesis statement
The coffee industry has been thriving over the years up to 1985, but due to decline in sales completion and supply being greater than demand the industries’ survival and growth has dwindled.

Rationale
This question was chosen by the researcher to examine the factors that encouraged the development and existence of the coffee industry. This research will help others fix the problem and provide jobs for unemployed people, bring more money for the government to fund programs such as P.A.T.H which helps children in schools as well as for the government to buy more medical necessities.

Introduction
Coffee was introduced to Jamaica by Sir Nicholas Lawes governor of Jamaica at that time, he brought the plant from Haiti in 1728. It was first planted in the parish of St. Andrew on the Blue Mountains. The Coffee Industry became successful because of the natural attributes of the country such as the cool climate which was suitable for the growth of coffee. The relief of the land such as the rugged mountains and the rich soil. The marketing overseas also proved valuable as it provided foreign exchange. The industry also provided employment for competent and incompetent workers. As a result of its growth farmers saw it fit to invest in the cultivation of coffee in various parts of Jamaica. It became more dominant in 1838 after slavery was fully abolished and seen as a good investment by others than peasant farmers.

The coffee industry is important to the economy of Jamaica. Coffee is the third most exported agricultural product in Jamaica. The unique flavor of the beverage made by the beans is recognized worldwide which intern results in investors in vesting in the production of the plant, This leads to revenue in foreign exchange for the economic development of the country .The industry also employs thousands of skilled and unskilled workers
The coffee industry dates back to the 1700s during slavery when slaves were used to cultivate coffee as a subsidiary crop on sugar plantations. During that time the industry was not as established. The crop was planted on the steep slopes of the Blue Mountains, the uneven terrane resulted in a good runoff system that allows the excess rain water to run off. According to Benghiat coffee cultivation began in the foot hills of St. Andrew mountains and gradually extended into the steep exterior of the eastern Blue Mountains, eventually reaching its highest point, the peak at 7,402. The mountain’s shale soil contributed to the unique flavor of the beans. Coffees ideal growth temperature is between 15 to 24 degrees celsius with the Blue Mountains temperature being between 5 to 27 degrees Celsius creates the perfect growing condition .The distinct rainy and dry seasons, an effect of the location of the island, results in the growing and maturation periods of the plant. Before slavery ended 686 coffee plantations existed, after the slaves were freed in 1838 the labor supply shortened. 465 plantations were abandoned and were later sub-divided and sold or leased to peasant farmers. Peasant farmers became the back bone of the coffee industry .With a lack of monetary aid and equipment to appropriately process the coffee affected the quality Jamaica normally produces due to this the brand and position started to degrade. With a need to bring Jamaica’s coffee back to its former glory the government passed the Coffee Industry Regulatory Act of 1948 . From the beginning the government had supported the coffee growing industry. When the industry took a turn for the worst the government passed the Coffee Industry Regulator Act of 1948 that commenced the birth of the Coffee Industry Board. The board was to take responsibility for processing the coffee and the marketing of the produce .There was a noticeable increase in quality but not in production .The Coffee Industry Board controlled the buying and selling of the coffee whether locally or abroad to make sure the grade of the coffee did not decrease. The Japanese government gave loans to the Jamaican government to give the coffee industry board to expand coffee cultivation. When this strategy however did not heighten production the government later deregulated the industry in 1983.This was to allow farmers producing 10,000 boxes of coffee to export their own products increase export production and return to growers and to maximize foreign exchange as stated in the government’s Policy Paper on Coffee States. Jamaica’s first recorded export of coffee was in 1737 about 83,400 pounds were sold to England. After the deregulation the Japanese government and Japanese coffee imports invested heavily in the Blue Mountain coffee .the most of Jamaica’s coffee was exported to Japan it caused a rise in the price of coffee in Europe and North America.
