The second attitude we should strive to cultivate is patience. When we are impatient with ourselves, we activate compulsive emotions such as anxiety and anger that controls our actions and behaviors. Unsuccessful at achieving awareness of our impatient self can cause the mind to unmindfully speak and the body to intuitively act, resulting in actions we could possibly later regret. According to Altman, having a sense of guilt does not activate awareness rather it further stimulates negative emotions, fueling more compulsive behavior. Moreover, Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes how worries and anxiety only make us see the unimportance of what’s in front of us. Therefore, patience is an essential quality for ourselves when the mind is agitated. According …show more content…
When we do things that are unlike us, we are not in control of ourselves. What we are doing here is doing the thing another person with trust in him/herself does. This does not mean we choose to trust him/her, but because we believe we won’t get judged for standing in. However, when we make mistakes, we won’t be able to look outside of ourselves for guidance because these mistakes were never ours in the first place. Kabot-Zinn states that trusting yourself is the first step to trusting others. Moreover, seeking for help should not mean one is weak or that he/she lacks trust in oneself. Buddhism

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Thich Nhat Hanh: “Buddhism is already engaged. If it is not, it is not Buddhism.” Walpola Rahula: “Buddhism is based on service to others”…political and social engagement is the “heritage of the bhikkhu” and the essence of Buddhism. Robert Thurman: “The primary Buddhist position on social action is one of total activism, an unswerving commitment to complete self-transformation and complete world-transformation.” Stated in simplest terms, engaged Buddhism means the application of Buddhist teachings to contemporary social problems. Engaged Buddhism is a modern reformist movement. A practitioner is socially engaged “in a nonviolent way, motivated by concern for the welfare of others, and as an expression of one’s own practice of the Buddhist Way” (King Being 5). In this description Sallie B. King invokes the spirit of the Bodhisattva vow: May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. According to Ken Jones engaged Buddhism is “an explication of social, economic, and political processes and their ecological implications, derived from a Buddhist diagnosis of the existential human condition” (Kraft New). Jones emphasizes the social theory underlying engaged Buddhism. According to engaged Buddhists the “three poisons” of greed, anger and ignorance apply both to the individual and to “large-scale social and economic forces” (Kraft New); their remediation is therefore the collective concern of society. As the subject...

Patton   |   Adlai Stevenson: It's hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.   Al Gini: The term power comes from the Latin posse: to do, to be able, to change, to influence or effect. To have power is to possess the capacity to control or direct change. All forms of leadership must make use of power. The central issue of power in leadership is not Will it be used? But rather Will it be used wisely and well?   Albert Einstein: Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.   Barack Obama: I always believe that ultimately, if people are paying attention, then we get good government and good leadership. And when we get lazy, as a democracy and civically start taking shortcuts, then it results in bad government and politics.   Carl Sagan: But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed...
