He studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1941-1943, and also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1946-1948. Kelly travel to France in 1949 and infrequently attended classes at Ecole des beaux-arts where he was introduced to Surrealism and Neo-Plasticism that inspired many of his future art pieces (Guggenheim). Ellsworth Kelly’s “November Painting” was painted in 1950. It is an oil piece painted on wood in a white frame. The only colors that are displayed in the painting are black and white that makes the piece organized and concise, while also creating a nice contrast. The canvas itself is a slightly off-white. The off-white canvas is somewhat textured from the oil paint. Intermittently dispersed across the canvas are small, separate black and white geometric shapes, which unlike the background retain a smooth surface. ...1-1 Do you like to spend time by yourself? When I was in middle school and high school, I got the impression that being alone meant you were a social outcast. At lunch, for example, only the "losers" or "nerds" ate alone; if you were surrounded by friends, you were popular. As a result, I was always anxious about being alone. Like a lot of young people, I worried about having enough friends and going out on the weekends instead of staying home like a "loner." I have to admit, though, that I spent more weekends at home than I did out on the town with my friends. As I've grown older, though, I think I've come to appreciate more and more having some time to be alone. Maybe it's the constant noise and demands of three children that helps me appreciate some quiet time to myself. In fact, some of my favorite time during the day is the time I spend driving to and from work (I live about twenty minutes from where I work). I often listen to the radio, so I don't know if I'm technically alone, but it's time where I can think and reflect on things that have happened during the day. Many different opinions have been expressed as to what the poet was trying to convey in these lines; happiness, life, or maybe even death. The poem was written during the early 20th century, around the 1920s. According to an analysis done on this poem: “...Frost wrote the poem on a hot summer day...” (Gualdoni 2). Quite an interesting piece of information that questions why Frost would use a season opposite to the one he was currently writing through. The poem itself is written in iambic tetrameter so that 4 lines are grouped together in each stanza. There is a visible rhyme scheme and figures of speech that coexist within the piece. The first two lines in a stanza rhyme with each other while the third line stands to temporarily disrupt the balance, only to be followed by a fourth line with a rhyme that will match the previous two. A broad sense of imagery invites the reader to his/her imagination and calmly surrounds them in that cold winter night. In the woods with just his horse, the snow and a frozen lake, is a simple setting the poet used for this piece. The first few lines display a character that is in the middle of nowhere and mentions of an unknown person that the “woods” belong to. “Who woods these are I think I know. ...My wife and I attended the performance of pianist Lang Lang with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Sunday, October 19, conducted by Neeme Järvi. The program was Weber’s Overture to Euryanthe and Chopin’s Concerto No. 1 in E minor for Piano and Orchestra and Concerto No. 2 in F minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op 21. Before beginning this paper, I feel some background and perspective are in order. In my entire 45 plus (and we’ll leave it at that) years, I have never been to a Symphony Concert. I have never been to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. I have had no interest in the past to attend a Symphony Concert because, quite frankly, I thought it would be boring. My musical tastes are more towards NewsRadio88 and the contemporary; however, I viewed this as being an opportunity to try something new. My wife attended with me and her feelings were generally the same. Our initial thoughts could not have been more wrong. The overall concert experience from a logistics perspective far exceeded my expectations. Ordering tickets was simple via the internet. Access to NJ PAC from Northern New Jersey was quick and easy. Parking was directly across the street from NJ PAC and with the pre-paid voucher was no hassle. The local area in Newark seemed to be clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing. And on a Sunday the 20 mile trip took approximately 30 minutes door to door. The venue was another part of the experience which exceeded...
