Thinking Ethically
Introduction
Ethics in general is concerned with human behavior, basically the understanding of right and wrong. Ethics is basically doing the right thing and always remain ethical in all aspects of life; Ethics is base on the norms like truthfulness, honesty, integrity, respect for others, fairness, and justice. Ethics play a role in all aspects of life like business, restaurant at all part of life ethics come in to play. When it comes to hiring a person ethics play a role, should you hire someone because they qualify or because of the color of their skin, school the went etc. Now remaining ethical all depends on how the person chooses to go about the situation. Answer to question #1 “A mentor is an experienced, productive senior employee who helps develop a less experienced employee, called the protégé. Most mentoring relationships develop informally as a result of interests or values shared by the mentor and protégé” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009). There are many possible ways that a senior executive can mentor employees into behaving ethically. The first possible way of mentoring employees into behaving ethically is to lead by example. The senior executives need to ensure that they are setting up a great example for others employees to follow. If they are not setting a great example themselves, they should not expect employee or mentees to remain or be ethically if they are not teaching, training them or leading by example. A senior executive’s behavior can impact a mentee’s productivity one because of the close and personal interactions that they have. Senior executives have the responsibility of remaining fair and unbiased as it pertains to office issues and affairs. Answer to question #2 Absolutely yes, having a CFO who places a high priority on ethical behavior would help employees meet high ethical standards. The reason that is true is because people will only go as far as you let them go. If they know there are rules and they are held responsible for them and could possibly lose their positions or jobs period for not following those rules and regulations than they would be more likely to be more careful and remain ethical. For those who do not understand ethics if their positions are important to them, they would research or ask questions to ensure that they are remaining ethical at all times. If employees are aware of the laws and regulation and also aware of the consequences of violating these rules and regulations than most likely they will work on remaining ethical to avoid having to deal with the consequences. Answer to question #3 A way that HR can help develop financial executives who are ethical leaders by providing a ethical leadership program for employees, and also making sure that they are taking the time to learn about the individual to ensure that they meet the characteristics of an ethical person. An ethical person is someone who is able to examining their own behavior and values, and the willingness and strength to accept responsibility for the effects of their actions on others, and themselves. With the following characteristics listed with the right training and examples financial executives can definitely become an e ethical leaders and mentors. Answer to question #4 Two traditional methods that could be used to foster ethical behavior would be Simulations and Behavior Modeling. “A simulation is a training method that represents a real-life situation, with trainees making decisions resulting in outcomes that mirror what would happen on the job. Simulations enable trainees to see the impact of their decisions in an artificial, risk-free environment” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009). This type of training put the employee in the position they have to make a decision, that is the greatest way to determine if the employee understand the concept of ethics and it also help HR and management to understand where the employee stands when it comes to ethics. Behavior Modeling involves training sessions in which participants observe other people demonstrating the desired behavior, then have opportunities to practice the behavior themselves(Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009 ). This is another great training technique because it goes back to leading by example. That is where mentors come in and set an example for mentees this way they know the difference between what is ethical and what is not.
