This Road We call Life
Boy Meets World had so many great things going for it. It taught children life lessons without them having to learn the hard way and there being a possibility of ruining their lives forever. The show talked about real issues going on in the world, unlike many other television shows geared toward the same audience. The show even became emotional at times. Some people in the show were better off than others, but that did not matter to the characters. They all treated each other the same. This is an idea that should be instilled in all children across America. At the same time, the show could be funny and exciting. The success of the show, however, depended on the audience. It resonated so deeply with the generation that grew up with it because the characters grew and changed along with the audience.

This Road We Call Life
Colcord (1997) wrote,
“When this Boy Meets World
Boy Meets World
Wandering down this road that we call life Is what we’re doin’
It’s good to know I have friends that will always
Stand by me
When this Boy Meets World” (ll. 1-7). This quote from the theme song of Boy Meets World demonstrates a good perspective to have on life. The themes of the show resonated with its audience because the characters face so many real-life situations and issues throughout the course of the show. Shawn, in particular, goes through many hard times and has to learn how to deal with these difficulties properly. The show’s success has depended on the growth of its characters in relation to the growth of its audience.
The show focuses on two young boys as they grow up and move on to bigger and better lives. The boys experience situations to which many people can relate. Some major character archetypes shown in Boy Meets World include the boy whose family is well off with the friend whose family has low income, as well as the boy and the girl who like each other but, who are afraid to say it. These are situations that most people have experienced in one way or another. Another real-life issue portrayed in the show is growing up, finishing high school and having to leave home for the first time, a scary idea to most people. The show includes conflicts between brother and brother, friend and friend, father and son, boy and girl, mother and son, and teacher and students.
Some of the conflicts we see in Boy Meets World revolve around the emotional development of the characters. As children grow into adults they become better at dealing with their emotions, though some are better at it than others. Much of how children develop depends on how their parents raise them and the challenges they have to face while growing up. John Santrock (2010) says “During middle and late childhood, many children show marked improvement in understanding and managing their emotions. However, in some instances, as when they experience stressful circumstances, their coping abilities can be challenged” (p. 558). When a child’s coping abilities are challenged, they may have a harder time dealing with stressful situations.
This inability to cope is exemplified by one of the main characters in Boy Meets World. Shawn starts out as an impoverished child growing up in a trailer park, trying to learn to live with parents who have differences of opinions on everything and a mother who cannot seem to be able to decide if she wants to be in his life. His family, though they love him, are not the best people in the world to be raising a child. Most of them have prison records or have spent time in jail. By the end of the series, though, Shawn is able to move beyond this rough start to life, own up to his mistakes, and accept the deserved punishments.
One person who helps him do this is his best friend Cory. Cory is not exactly a “rich kid,” but his family is much better off financially than Shawn’s family. Even though Cory and Shawn come from two completely different lifestyles, they meet very early in life, become fast friends and are soon inseparable. This life-long friendship is one that every child in America dreams of having and is one of the bigger reasons that the show was so successful.
This show was not always as successful. Rider Strong (2013), the actor who played Shawn, says:
At the time, it was actually a little frustrating for us as a show because we would get good ratings, but we weren’t a hit the way that, say, Sabrina the Teenage Witch — which followed us — was. Sabrina had better numbers than we did; Boy Meets World was always just ‘OK.’ … There was almost this [behind-the-scenes] sense that no one was really watching our show. “Rider Strong Recounts Boy Meets World’s Journey”
Despite this, the show turned out to be an international success. The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) gave Boy Meets World 7.8 stars out ten.
Boy Meets World stopped short of being as sappy as Full House, one of the show’s biggest competitors for ratings. IMBd only gave this show 6.1 stars. Full House was sentimental to the point that every episode ended with a solved problem and a hug. Unlike Full House, Boy Meets World sometimes had no happy ending. This show had a bigger dose of reality and taught hard lessons that many kids have to learn to survive in the current world. Shawn, in particular, had a lot of hard lessons to learn. There are three episodes that particularly come to mind when it comes to Shawn learning difficult lessons. “The Fugitive,” an episode from season one, starts with a thirteen-year-old Shawn showing up at Cory’s house in the middle of a thunderstorm soaking wet. He has thrown a lit cherry bomb in a mail box and the police are after him. This may seem a bit drastic to some people, but something similar has surely happened to some teens in America. By the end of the episode he learns that no matter what he has done he can always go to his parents with his problems and they will help him no matter how bad the situation seems. This is a good concept for children to learn because they need to know they have people to rely on not only through the good times, but also the bad
“Cult Fiction,” from season four shows a lost and confused sixteen-year-old Shawn meeting a pretty girl who is in a cult. He decides to join the cult thinking that, if she can find peace there he can too. After his dad leaves to go find his mom and his mom decides not to come back to her family, he thinks that he has no one in his life upon whom he can depend. However, when Mr. Turner, his teacher who has treated him like a son, is in a motorcycle accident, he turns to God. As he is sitting in the hospital room with Turner, who is unconscious, he prays that he will become better. Shortly after praying, Turner holds Shawn’s hand. This teaches him that he can rely on God when things become hard. A child that begins relying on a higher power shows major religious growth and therefore is one step closer to becoming an adult.
The next show that comes to mind is “Family Trees” from season seven. This episode shows a nineteen-year-old Shawn who has just lost his dad four months ago. He receives a letter from his mom informing him that he has the right to know she is not his birth mom. After receiving no results from an internet search to find his real mother, he turns to alcohol to solve his problems. He ends up ruining a party by showing up drunk, thus hurting all his friends and family, but soon discovers that no matter how bad life can get drugs and alcohol is never the answer. They will only hurt and destroy, never help like many people in the world think.
All of these episodes show real life situations that many other shows will not talk about on a children’s program. There are even a select few episodes that Disney Channel will not show due to their content. Boy Meets World is different from so many others in its generation not only because it talks about real issues, but also because it managed to keep all of the main characters throughout the years that it aired, aside from adding some side characters and changing up the surroundings a bit. From middle school through college, the main trio of Corey, Topanga, and Shawn keep evolving and growing. As the show goes on Cory’s older brother Eric develops into more of a main character. At the same time they bring in Jack, Shawn’s older half-brother, as well as Rachel, their new college roommate. This secondary trio of characters adds a comical aspect to the show.
The show brought laughs, but it also focused on the main issues about which kids growing up in school have to worry. The show had many good serious episodes, and most of the serious episodes dealt with Shawn: Shawn goes out drinking; Shawn's dad died; Shawn joined a cult; Shawn blew up a mailbox. The show mixed comedy with seriousness well, and some episodes can be truly emotional. All of this is very important to the show, but what is most important is that the characters lean and grow along with its audience starting from the very first episode.

...Eyes On The Road Is it possible to read a book and drive at the same time? Absolutely not, so why should we think it is ok to use our cell phones and drive at the same time. When drivers decide to send or receive text message on their cell phones, while driving they are putting their life and another person life in jeopardy. This issue is now a national problem and one source has claimed 1.6 million accidents a year, results of 6,000 deaths and a half million injuries (The Department of Transportation). The one thing that all drivers should consider is “ vision.” The use of cell phones while operating a vehicle can cause accidents, fatalities, and road rage. Initially, more and more accidents are occurring, since all kinds of drivers are now using their cell phones to text message, dial phone number and checking their e-mails, while they are driving on the road. Vehicle manufacturers are making the vehicles equipped with a Bluetooth hands free device, so drivers would be more attentive when they are driving on the road. However, another source showed drivers making a phone call were four times as likely to cause an accident as other drivers; hands-free devices were not significantly safer; if you text and drive, it's twice as risky as just talking on the phone (“PBS NewsHour”). Furthermore, the only way to assure safety and a decline in statics is to stop using the cell phone while driving So far, cellular phones and road rage are a bad combination and In today’s society...

My Life

...Writing and healing Stacy Marvin My life When I think back on the life I have had, no one can take my memories away. The time I had in Florida with my soul mate, my best friend was irreplaceable to me. I cannot even explain how much I have learned from my life, the good and the bad. I want to share something with you from my past but also more recent. Here is one of my childhood memories along with one of the most heartbreaking ones that only happened on June 11, 2013. The sound of the engine revving up as I hit ninety around the twists and turns of the curvy road was the best adrenaline rush I ever had in my life. I was eleven years old and driving my dad’s brand new SS Monte Carlo. Heading to pick up my best friend Debbie. The roads were wet with the rain from earlier on that day. I turned down this dead end road and we started jamming to the music we cranked up a few minutes earlier. We did not see the curve in the road and I lost control of the car and ended up off an embankment that went down to the old railroad tracks. This cliff as I call it, used to have trains running through it, but then was just a rock quarry. Debbie and I both screamed as we skidded and lost control of the car and everything went silent. We were hanging off the edge, afraid to move. We just knew this was it for us, we told each other the final words we thought we would ever hear,( I love you my friend, you mean the world to me, I am glad you are here with me and she said the...

Distracted Driving

...drivers who are on the road. When a driver is using a cell phone, it doesn’t matter what kind of person they are, or what their age is, or their gender. Accidents don’t show any sympathy. Driving while using a cell phone is dangerous and there should be laws that prohibit the use of cell phones while driving. These laws should be effective in every state, not just some states. This is a seriously dangerous issue because that driver is putting not only but their life at stake, but the lives of other drivers on the road at stake when cell phones are used. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in the U.S. that involved distracted driving (dd), of the 5,474 deaths, 995 of them involved reports of a cell phone being a factor, and 24,000 injuries were reported from cell phone related accidents (Cell Phone & Texting While Driving Statistics, 2010). This is a serious problem in our world today in the lifestyle we live, but the problem is solvable. All that needs to happen is for a few laws to be passed to refrain people from using cell phones. It should not be legal in any state to talk or text while driving. If laws were passed, there would be no question that it would make the roads much safer and the numbers would show it. Studies at Vanderbilt University have shown that the brain doesn’t process things fast enough to handle two things at once. So to those who think they can concentrate on driving while using a cell phone, you’re wrong. When we are driving, we get...

Text While Driving

...Parents always tell us how dangerous it is to text or talk while driving. But we don’t even think about it. . How many of you have ever text or call while you were driving? I want to share a story with you that happened only a few weeks ago. We had just finished our match against BYU and we were trying to find a place to eat. Since we have never been to Utah we didn’t know where we could get food. Our coach decided to call her friend who lives in Provo. While she was on the phone a cop drove by and I heard her say “ Ill call you back in a second because there is a cop driving next to me”. Her friends said that it was legal to talk and drive in Utah. So, our coach stayed on the phone. She was so focused on her phone call that she didn’t really pay attention to the road. We saw that the light in front of us was red but our coach wasn’t stopping. A bus was coming from the right and we were going right at it. And still our coach didn’t stop. When we were about to hit the bus Emily screamed “IT’S RED!”. Our coach turned the car quickly and we just missed crashing. This would not have happened if she wasn’t talking on her phone while driving. U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety surveys state that 79% people from 19 to 24 years old admit that they use their phone while they drive. These surveys also show that cell phones are a leading cause of car crashes. The police records of 2012 show that about 6,000 deaths and a half a million injuries were caused...

Hero’s Journey of the Dead Poet’s Society

...fills me with nostalgia for New England between its brilliant display of tradition, prep schools and brilliant autumn sceneries. This movie has since sat at the top of my list of favorites since its inception into the theater in 1989. LANDMARKS OF THE JOURNEY Set at the best boy’s prep school in New England, this story introduces us to motivated and impressionable young lads who are inspired and moved by their English teacher, John Keating who was once a student at the same academy. While all the boys we meet have various teenage angst with which they face, there are three main characters who undergo intense transformations as they are faced with different conflicts (INMOST CAVE) that they must face. Neil Perry, the driven lad with a passion for acting must face his father’s strict guidelines for what he has planned for his son. Todd Anderson faces the pressures of following the footsteps of his popular and successful older brother. Struck by the beauty of an unavailable young girl, Knox Overstreet seeks his inner romantic and forges on with being led by his heart in order to win over the affections of said girl. The more we learn about John Keating, the more inspired the boys become in leading these inner battles of life and face their fears head-on. We also learn that John Keating’s passion of poetry and living a full free life has led him to a love of teaching. While he is inspired by the boys as much as they are inspired by him,...

Compare and Contrast Road Not Taken and a Worn Path

...cover. Or believe all that you see at first glance. There are many of times that a poem or a short story can carry the same message or make the same point or so we think. Just because they may fall under the same category does not mean that the carry the same meaning. For example “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “A Worn Road” by Welty are both about the directions that can be taken in life. We all at one or another are faced with having to make a choice that will affect us for the rest of our life. Some paths may lead us down the right road to happiness and wealth. While other paths, may lead us down heartache and sorrow. At the end it is up to us on how we live the life that we choose for your self’s. The two reading that I choose to compare and contrast are “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “A Worn Road” by Welty. As it looks at first glance they might be about the same thing, but in reality they are not. One is a poem and the other written as a short story. They both talk about the paths, roads and choice in life. “The Road Not Taken” is about a journey and choice and decision on what or which way to go in life and also the unknown. This poem is about the decision and the direction of life and where it might take you. The second is a short story about an old women and her journey in life. She recalls stories and the path that she has traveled many of times. On her travels she is dreaming and talking to herself and letting her imagination get the...

Texting While Driving (Speech)

...Introduction: Good morning everyone, today we call our world as busy world or multitasks world and with the rush-rush-rush mentality most people have these days; it's no surprise that more and more people are driving while distracted. Eating, talking or texting on a mobile phone, making adjustments to the radio, talking with passengers -- all take a driver's focus off of the road. Imagine this, it's a beautiful day for a drive, the sun is out, windows rolled down, the music in on softly, just a perfect day. Then you look down at your cell-phone, just briefly, quick enough to remove your eyes from the road, then you BAM you made an accident!! How many of you have cell phones? How many of you drive? Honestly, how many of you use your cell phone and drive at the same time? I have been the passenger in the car while the driver was texting. To be honest I don’t really want to put my life in the hands of someone who is not caring paying attention to what is going on around them. I chose the topic of texting while driving because many people and especially we young and teens do this continuously. Today I am hoping that I can show how dangerous texting while driving is and what to do in order to stop this phenomenon. According to a Nationwide Insurance study in 2008, 66% of drivers between the age of 18 and 24 send or receive text messages while behind the wheel. Text messaging while driving leads the list as the biggest distraction while driving. National Highway...

Joseph Campbell Hero's Journey Cycle

...Joseph Campbell's hero's journey describes the cycle of heroes. All heroes go through a process from an ordinary life to a final reward and that is what the hero's journey cycle is all about. Throughout the adventure the hero experiences challenges, but when the hero overcome the tests/allies the hero receive a reward at the end. ( The reward is not always physical but sometimes mental) According to the hero's cycle from Joseph Campbell, my life relates to the cycle because I have experienced the the call to adventure, tests and challenges, and rewards This is how my life adventure relates to Joseph Campbell's hero's journey cycle! It was just an ordinary life for me, loving water but afraid to drown. The call to adventure had come whenever I had to start swim lessons and learn many different strokes in the deep blue water. Sometimes I would refuse because I had to start learning dives and it would be hard to come up with the water again. Although I did have a mentor which was my dad, he told I shouldn't give up. This is just the call to adventure from the hero's journey....

Banning Cell Phones While Driving

...second. Will a life be lost? Will two or more lives be lost? We know what can happen to an extent, but let’s not find out what the full extent is. We need everyone, including the Government, around the nation to really see the pure danger and horrible outcomes of cell phone usage behind the wheel. The first reason why we need to ban cell phone usage behind the wheel is because it is a huge distraction to the driver. The driver is not fully focused, alert, or at their full awareness when they are using their cell phone. Secondly, this so called distraction can or will lead to some sort of accident. Whether that accident is fatal or leaving the other person in critical condition. Thirdly, that last reason we should really ban this act is because the drivers are purely reckless. These drivers can be compared to drivers that are under the influence due to their lack of judgment and their ability to focus on the road. I’m sure that people are quality of looking at a text or answering their phone while driving, but my intention is to try to get everyone aware of the dangers of this action, and to hopefully get people to second think the decision to do so. There is a time and place for everything, but using your cell phone behind the wheel is not one of them. Cell phone usage behind the wheel is very distracting to the driver. When people are on the phone talking or texting while driving, our attention is on our phone rather than the on road much where it needs to be. This distraction...

Banning Cellphones While Driving

...they are good, they can cause a lot of problems on our roads. Do you believe that using a cell phone while driving causes a driver to be impaired as a driver who is driving under the influence of alcohol? Well, according to research done by psychologists at the University of Utah, “people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at a legal blood alcohol limit 0.08 percent, which is the minimum level of an illegal drunken driver in most U.S. states.” Today, more people are being drunken by their cell phones. This impaired driving, according to the psychologists, is also causing a lot of road users to respond slower in many ways than if they were sober. The drivers, they said, take a longer time to hit the brakes, take a slower time to get back to normal speed after breaking and are more capable of being involved in an accident. Can you see the danger in this type of driving? Can you see what could possible happen to pedestrians or other drivers under this type of driving? If as a people we care about our lives as well as the lives of others, then, law makers would enact laws to ban the use of cell phones while driving nationwide. This, I believe will reduce the statistic collected on driving under the influence of cell phones. I am therefore calling upon legislatures from all nations to look seriously into this matter and help save the lives of our people on the roads by banning the use of cell phones while driving. Using...

Learning to Bend with the Road: the Childhood of Carlos Eire

...“A bend of the road is not the end of the road… unless you fail to make the turn.” Where these words originate from, I can’t say, but I can say the I have never understood them more because of the inspiring story of Carlos Eire. The memoir of Carlos Eire, Learning To Die in Miami, is a first hand account of a young Cuban refugee boy’s escape from Fidel Castro’s, Castrolandia in 1962. From start to finish Eire recounts as many memories as his conscience and subconscious will allow. In his memoir he focuses heavily on his “nine months and two weeks,” at the “Palace Ricardo.” It is evident to me that Carlos was molded and changed from the experience. In this essay I will focus on this time in Carlos Eire’s life and expose those defining moments from his, “Palace Ricardo” Phase, and argue that not only did it alter his life, it also prepared him and awakened him to his life and years to follow by learning to “bend with the road”. I will also draw from other sources to further illuminate his path to success through this difficult time. To set the tone; when Carlos Eire began his experience at “The Palace Ricardo”, he had already been air lifted from his parents and home in Cuba and shuffled from refugee holding grounds surrounded by strangers where he ate strange food in a strange land. Then he was given to a Jewish foster family. From this place of comfort he grew to love, he was quickly thrown into a house that his parents never hoped for him to end up in. This house was nicknamed...

Roamsn Road

...Question: "What is the Romans Road to salvation?" Answer: The Romans Road to salvation is a way of explaining the good news of salvation using verses from the Book of Romans. It is a simple yet powerful method of explaining why we need salvation, how God provided salvation, how we can receive salvation, and what are the results of salvation. The first verse on the Romans Road to salvation is Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." We have all sinned. We have all done things that are displeasing to God. There is no one who is innocent. Romans 3:10-18 gives a detailed picture of what sin looks like in our lives. The second Scripture on the Romans Road to salvation, Romans 6:23, teaches us about the consequences of sin - "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." The punishment that we have earned for our sins is death. Not just physical death, but eternal death! The third verse on the Romans Road to salvation picks up where Romans 6:23 left off, "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:8 declares, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus Christ died for us! Jesus' death paid for the price of our sins. Jesus' resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus' death as the payment for our sins. The fourth stop on the Romans Road to salvation is Romans 10:9, "that if you confess with...

Story of Success

...Aspects of life must intermingle and converge, resulting in a fusion of moments and a synthesis of ideas. Because one man's idea of a successful and fruitful life may not be the same as another man's hope for a brighter future. How one defines success is therefore integral to that person's experience of life in and around him. As we are creatures of habit, we can proceed through life with preconceived notions of what is and what should be, convinced that what has worked in the past must also work in the future. In that way we deny ourselves the virtue of malleability. We are often our own worst enemies. The Chinese philosopher and military tactician Sun Tzu likened the successful soldier to water. "Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing." The brilliance of this idea is not in the likening of life to war, rather in revealing the simple truth that we are a product of our experiences and how we adapt determines our success, along with what path we take. Each hill and valley we encounter provides us with an opportunity to adapt and change, gives us the chance to use our talents within the realms of our potential to evolve our life in new and sometimes unexpected ways. God's plan may be unknown and unfathomable to us as mere mortals, and there is no way we can predict where the road will lead us. We can, however, embrace our role in the game that is life, and welcome...
