Three Motivations of a Evil

Abstract : In this paper , the author tries to comment a famous story in Greek mythology. Firstly introducing the beginning's summarization , then giving my understanding of the reasons of the character's motivation .
Key words : Desire , Revenge ,Love

I have chosen several topics as my topic. Finally I decided to show my humble opinions to talk something about a story from Greek mythology---The Descendant of Tantalus (.(古:2011:356-379) This story began from Agamemnon , who just came back from Trojan War honorably .Then from the following story we learned how their family members cruelly injure or kill their brothers fathers ,or even husbands. The feuds in his big family were deeply seated ,from generations to generations , without an end .What shocks me most is that Agamemnon's wife-Clytaemnestra hated her own son even hoped him to be dead .What causes this ? What causes this family's tragedy?

1,Desire People’s burning desire makes them addlebrained ,so that they do many things immoral. Like who I just refer to , as a mother , at least I think she should care her children .But she acted like that her two little girls were not her real daughter. When she heard the news of her son's death , except the sorrow , she may feel happy for this information ,because she knew that so long as Orestes died , she has no need to be scared with Orestes any more. It's the desire of controlling country causes her comes to be a callous woman. Agamemnon's ancestor---Tantalus , he killed his son Pelops to cook a meal to invite a god . Fortunately, the god saved Pelops .But Pelops killed Myrtilus for he refused to pay Myrtilus's commission of helping him get the king's daughter. In Agamemnon's family , most of the tragedies happen because of people's desire for authority and endless revenge. Desire is easily to make people get impetuous and do evil .

2,Revenge②

Justice thought in the origin of man is the desire for revenge and equal affection. (Lafague Paul ) ③ As I can see , revenge remains their family main theme throughout the whole story. Thyestes cast greedy eyes on his brother's golden rams , later, he raped his brother's wife and finally get the ram he want . His brother ,after know what Thyestes have done , for revenge ,he not only killed Thyestes's two sons, but also use the two boy's body to cook a delicacies to let their father eat .What's more, after a few years , Thyestes's another son --- . Aegisthus , to revenge for his brothers,he planed a plot and killed their enemy --- Atreus at last . Agamemnon is Atreus's son ,he ran away with his brother when Thyestes occupied their country, one day Agamemnon came back and recapture back his country .He released Aegisthus to the south . Aegisthus still wanted to revenge . Finally he got his chance , he plot together with Agamemnon's wife and killed Agamemnon when he don't expect . Clytaemnestra hate Agamemnon because he sacrificed their daughter to the gods .She revenged ,killed her husband ,with her intrigant, without any regret . Clytaemnestra and Agamemnon's son---Orestes saw his mother killed his father with his own eyes . This memory brands him for life until he killed his mother by his own hands . He engrave on his mind to revenge on his mother and her intrigant for his poor father. Even the god Hermon cannot avoid the revenge stuff. After (Hemers's son) Myrtilus's killed by Pelops ,Hermes, his heart burned with longing for revenge. He swears he would revenge Pelops and his young generations.Revenge is quite a constant topic in western literature works , like Hamlet , Romeo and Juliet , Wuthering Heights and so on ...

3,Love Not everyone do evil for good reasons ,but there do have someone do evil for beautiful excuse. Like Aegisthus , he killed Agamemnon because he wanted to revenge for his family members , he may feel unfair about their life . He didn't do this revenge thing on complete evil intention , I think ,at least ,his point of departure included one thing that called love to his brothers and his father . We cannot do evil just because we say that we do it for some good reasons , but we should not ignore those beautiful parts of humanity.

Conclusion: Tantalus's family story is revealing about a evil's three kinds of motivation:desire, revenge, and love . If you don't control your desire well , it's very easy to lead incidents. For revengement , just like Lafague Paul said ,Justice thought in the origin of man is the desire for revenge and equal affection. Almost everyone has a sense of revengement , just the 'more or less' distinction. And the love , like a coin has two sides , everything happened must have at least two aspects .These three motivation are all men's nature . So many Tantalus's family cases may be are very similar to things happened in our daily life .

...In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, Macbeth is motivated to commit his evil acts by three forces. For example, the witches in the play give him the first idea that he will be king. also, his own power starts to take over later in the play. Lastly, Lady Macbeth pushed and provoked him constantly to commit these crimes. So even though Macbeth committed these acts, there was more influence then just his ideas. The three witches in the play are a pretty big influence on Macbeth. For example, the witches tell him that he will be the Thane of Cawdor and it comes true proving the witches right of their double sided lies. “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!”. . Also, They tell him none of woman born can kill him, making him feel unstoppable. “The power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth.” . In the end they basically start Macbeth’s evil crimes. Secondly, it’s his own want to become king. One way he proves this is killing his friend Banquo because he wants to keep the throne and the witches said Banquo’s sons would be kings. Towards the end he starts to murder innocent women and children. This ends up to cost Macbeth his life due to his power and his carelessness of killing. Lastly, Lady Macbeth is a huge factor in Macbeth’s evil acts. For example, she is the one who really starts him off to killing. She pushes him for her want of being queen. “And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full…"In addition to this she constantly questions his manhood...

Time management skill is able to manage time to be able to successfully complete assignments on time. You will need both discipline and motivation to be successful in an online environment. These three main focuses will help you be successful in online schooling without one you will not be as successful. Online courses are a virtual space generated to allow for online students a chance to create their own environments to improve learning. It allows the student to better explore and collaborate different study methods. It provides students the ability to manage time wisely and it also allows for a flexible schedule for the student to do virtual rather than physical course work. Being able to manage time and have a flexible schedule gives the student more time to do other things such as spending time with family and building a better relationship with God. Self-discipline in learning new things is a hard thing to practice and usually takes a lot of tenacity and patience. Beowuld vs. Grendel's Mother

...The passage I chose was Beowulf's fight with Grendal's mother, which to me was the most exciting. During this underwater fight, the second of his three fights, Beowulf and his adversary continually battle throughout her home. Although the conflict seems unrealistic because of the location, it makes the battle even more thrilling and suspenseful. For this and several more reasons, the battle between Beowulf and Grendal's mother is the most exciting episode in this brilliant epic. The battle begins when Beowulf travels for many hours underwater to take revenge against Grendal's mother the day after she carried of one of Hrothgar's men. Beowulf and she proceed to fight until her miserable death in her own home. When Beowulf was almost to the point of death, he grabbed a giant sword of the wall and slew Grendal's mother. To me, this entire fight is very unrealistic. The sword, supposedly a massive sword created by giants, could never have been lifted by a normal person. The fact that he took several hours to get to the bottom of the lake makes the episode seem very unlikely, but it is also very useful in creating suspense in this poem. This entire episode is filled with excitement, suspense, and imagery. Suspense and imagery were hand-in-hand during this fight. Not only did suspense keep the reader's attention; it also created the mood of this episode. The most exciting point was when Beowulf took the giants' sword off the wall and killed Grendal's mother. When Beowulf took...

The Batman Legen and Methology Aspects

...trilogy There are a lot of differences and similarities between the heroes and gods of the Greek and romans myths and traditions compared to the superheroes and legends of the comic’s books and Hollywood movies. Scholars often conduct researches to define and analyze pieces of art to check its methodological features in terms of form and content. In this humble research we will try to shed the light on the aspects of mythology in batman as a superhero and a legend taking the dark knight trilogy as an example to examine how mythology is represented in this masterpiece by the brilliant director Christopher Nolan. The dark knight trilogy consists of 3 movies: batman begins (2005), the dark knight (2008) and the dark knight rises (2012). The three of them was directed by the filmmaker Christopher Nolan and were inspired from the batman character created by Bob Kane. ``Batman Begins`` movie was basically about the origin of the batman legend as a force of good in Gotham city. In the light of his parents tragic robbery murder (Bruce Wayne) took a journey around the globe looking for meaningful values and tools to fight injustice and criminals. He was taken in by a strange instructor called Ducard and taught him how to become a ninja in what is named the League of Shadows after that he came back to Gotham and uncover his masked crusader (Batman) in order to start fighting gangsters to end their rule in his native city streets. In the second movie ``the dark knight`` batman continues...

Shakespeare's Motivation In Macbeth

...The Witches’ Motivation Supernatural spirits roaming this Earth in the form of human bodies overturn morals and wreak havoc throughout Scotland. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the 3 Witches knowingly transform the once noble Macbeth into a corrupt King due to their twisted joy in witnessing the misfortune of others. In the 1600s, people of the Elizabethan era see witches to represent pure evil through their spells, potions, and wicked deeds. The three witches are referred to as “the Weird Sisters” (1.3.33) which translates to the Fates. Throughout Greek mythology, the Fates or the Moirai are goddesses who hold the power to manipulate one’s future and seek pleasure through the destruction of one’s wellbeing. Furthermore, the Witches’ love for chaos...

How Does Beowulf Show Honor

...Both courage and loyalty make up a strong friendship between two people, as shown with Wiglaf and Beowulf. Wiglaf’s loyalty and friendship to Beowulf is shown when he decides to help Beowulf with his battle against the dragon, and “as soon as they [come] / Together in combat”, they are able to slay the beast (2629-30). Beowulf believes in Wiglaf, and his friendship to him is displayed when he indirectly states during his dying moments that he wants Wiglaf to become the next king. Beowulf’s ability to display these three virtues in almost every one of his acts proves that he is emotionally and ethically worthy of praise, and that there is meaning and honor behind his title as a...

Good and Evil Religion

...“Good and Evil in Religion” Week 10 Assignment 1: World View Chart Writing Assignment REL212-World Religion V Ware Monday September 8, 2014 As we study the world religion, we can review many different concepts of each of them. We can look and compare the concept of human nature, salvation, views of after life if any, varies practices and rituals, even the celebration and festivals. One thing that I noticed over the last ten (10) weeks of studying religion is that every religion as a view towards Good and Evil. The views may not be exact but there are some form of concept with good and evil in them all. We studied in details approximately eleven (11) different religions over the course of this class. Of the total religions, we found that only one of them had a witchcraft and healing view towards good and evil. This was the study of Indigenous people. The Indigenous people have a timeline of before 2000 BCE and ancient ways passed down and adapted over millennia. (Fisher, 2014) There were three (3) religions which believed in the concept of Karma. Jainism and Hinduism had a view of Karma which means actions, and also the consequences of actions. It states that every act we make, even thought, desire will shape our future. (Fisher, 2014) However Buddhism believes in Karma which is defined slightly different because “it is the action of body, speech, and mind impressions of our virtuous and non virtuous action which experiences moment by moment...

Motivation

...An Overview of Motivation Theories Source: [pic] http://www.accel-team.com/motivation/theory_01.html Motivation theorists and their theories (1 of 2) Although the process of management is as old as history, scientific management as we know it today is basically a twentieth century phenomenon. Also, as in some other fields, practice has been far ahead of theory. This is still true in the field of management, contrary to the situation in some of the pure sciences. For instance, Albert Einstein, formulates a theory, which is later proved by decades of intensive research and experimentation. Not so in the field of management. In fact this field has been so devoid of real fundamental work so far, that Herbert A. Simon is the first management theoretician to win the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1978. His contribution itself gives a clue to the difficulty, bordering on impossibility, of real fundamental work in this field concerned with people. In order to arrive at a correct decision, the manager must have all the information necessary relevant to the various factors and all the time in the world to analyze the same. This is seldom, if ever, the case. Both the information available and the time at the managers disposal are limited, but he or she must make a decision. And the decision is, therefore, not the optimum one but a 'satisficing' one - in effect, a satisfactory compromise under the real conditions prevailing in the management 'arena'. Traditional theory...

Motivation In Beowulf

...What is Beowulf doing? (An analysis of the motivations for Beowulf’s actions in the poem) Beowulf is a hero figure that fights many monsters and for many reasons. Beowulf has been translated from an oral tale to a written tale in old English, to a written tale in modern English. It is unclear who the original author of the tale is, although many think that monks are partially responsible for it. Beowulf has three main battles throughout the tale and there is a motivation behind each one. The three motivations for Beowulf’s actions are that it is his duty, he wants to be a hero, and he wants to leave something behind for his people. In the Anglo Saxon time period, something being someone’s duty is something that is really important and Beowulf...

Argument Against God

...Argument Against God For the concept I chose Nagel’s argument against god. Nagel claims that because evil exists it indicates that God must not exist. Premise one states that God is all knowing, all-powerful, and all good. This portrays God as a being that could see, oppose, and destroy Evil with ease, but that isn’t the case, Evil is still in existence. Premise two expands off the claim that God is all-powerful, meaning that God could eliminate all Evil, but he hasn’t. Premise three demonstrates the claim that God is all knowing; therefore he is aware of all Evil. Premise four explains how God is all good meaning that He opposes all things Evil. Premise five claims that Evil is still found throughout God’s world. Thus supporting the conclusion that God cannot exist if Evil is still in existence, which it is. In my opinion, I find Nagel’s argument to be extremely compelling and one hundred percent possible. The idea that God is a being whole is all knowing, all-powerful, and all good suggests that he would create the best possible world. There are various examples that I found to be effective but the idea of a hole in a t-shirt, I found to be simplest and most understandable that demonstrates the inability for God to exist. Although this might be true and God may not exist I have a different outlook. If Evil did not exist what purpose would God serve? He is the protector of Evil and justifies all that is good, but with no bad would good even exist? Instead of each side, only a...

Love

...Don John is the evil bastard brother in the play. He is only recently reconciled with Don Pedro and he plays the role of a schemer, a discontent and a Machiavelli. In reality, Don John is merely the excluded character, a man who cannot fit into the society he is unwillingly a part of. When Conrad tries to tell him he should act happy around Don Pedro, he states, "I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in his grace" (1.3.21-22). Don John thus ignores the family network, fails to observe the proper code of conduct, misses the dinner party thrown by Leonato, and rebels against the compulsory set of social rules. Though Don John ostensibly influences all of the action of the play, he has very few speaking lines for a main character. Don John operates as a plot-device more than a fully fleshed out character. He does give us a little speech about how he’s a bad guy – and likes being a bad guy – but there’s not much that we say about him because we never really know his motivations, or even his reaction to all of the chaos he’s caused. In the end, he has run off before he can even be punished or have a warm, fuzzy change of heart scene. He’s definitely not Shakespeare’s most compelling and complex villain. Ultimately, though, it isn’t a failing of Shakespeare’s that this villain is so thin. It’s actually a reminder to the reader that the play isn’t supposed to be a tragedy, and isn’t even supposed to really analyze evil at all. The more important take-home points of the play...

...Employee Motivation: Theory and practice The job of a manager in the workplace is to get things done through employees. To do this the manager should be able to motivate employees. But that's easier said than done! Motivation practice and theory are difficult subjects, touching on several disciplines. In spite of enormous research, basic as well as applied, the subject of motivation is not clearly understood and more often than not poorly practiced. To understand motivation one must understand human nature itself. And there lies the problem! Human nature can be very simple, yet very complex too. An understanding and appreciation of this is a prerequisite to effective employee motivation in the workplace and therefore effective management and leadership. These articles on motivation theory and practice concentrate on various theories regarding human nature in general and motivation in particular. Included are articles on the practical aspects of motivation in the workplace and the research that has been undertaken in this field, notably by Douglas McGregor (theory y), Frederick Herzberg (two factor motivation hygiene theory,) Abraham Maslow (theory z, hierarchy of needs), Elton Mayo (Hawthorne Experiments) Chris Argyris Rensis Likert and David McClelland (achievement motivation.) Why study and apply employee motivation principles? Quite apart from the benefit and moral value of an altruistic approach to treating colleagues as human beings and respecting human dignity in all its...

Otherwise, all the religions should be classified as inherently violent. Furthermore, the author stressed that there should be no distinguishment among different religions. The intrinsic value for all religions is similar, which is to give people belief. Neither the Catholicism nor the West is superior because the strong power of the western countries and desires to gain resources according to the author. The aim of the author is to point out the Islamophobia is not justified, and it accounts to the discrimination and racism towards Islam and Muslims. Similar views can be found in the debate, although the debate is more focused on the recent ISIS issue rather that the Iraq war. Ben Affleck holds the view that the terrorist activities should be only associated with few extremists in the religion, and it is nothing to do with the religion and most of its believers who are peaceful people. Nevertheless, Sam Harris stands on the different side by stating that the extreme are a larger part of the Muslims. Mr. Harris’ point is that the instinct for jihad, apostasy, blasphemy and martyrdom comes from their belief which is Islam. In fact the root that stimulates the terrorists is Islam. The religion should be responsible for the evil....

Response Paper

...titled, “On Being an Atheist”. McCloskey argues for atheism as the preferred and better belief system based upon his refutation of the theistic arguments. He argues against the existence of God by attempting to refute the cosmological and teleological arguments; as well he endeavours to discredit a God based upon the presence of evil. In doing this, he extends the boundaries for arguing God, whilst opening the floor to debate free will and the apparent comfort of the atheistic belief system. However, through careful analysis of the arguments for God, and an insight into the mysterious free will that God has given man; we see that a theistic belief is logically more sound and preferred. McCloskey says that the proofs for the argument of God cannot definitively establish a case for the existence of God. Therefore, all those proofs for God cannot be used in the logical argument for a God. However, McCloskey didn’t recognize the three aspects when approaching the question: does God exist. Through these three studies, we are shown that though no one person can empirically prove the existence of God, He in fact still exists (Foreman, Lesson 18). The three aspects to approaching the question of God are: best explanations approach, cumulative case approach, and the minimalistic concept of God. The best explanations aspect refers to the existence of God as the best way of explaining the effects that we can empirically observe within our universe. The cumulative case view tells us that...
