Introducing the essay:

The variety of language, whether it can be seen or heard, diverse or standard, all play a critical role in a child’s life. Language makes the world go around, evidently by communicating with each other, hence why it is central to everything. Every member of society, including an infant, primary student, teenager, or adult all use their own language that is apparent to them. Through Auslan, Braille, oral language and written language, every member of society communicates through their own language, as well as variation, Discourse, gender, and/or social class.

Thesis statement:

(McCarthy, 2016). McCarthy (2016) also stated that when teaching valuing English to students of different languages, you must have a “clear, simple and articulated speech (refrain from ‘say it properly’…avoid loud and harsh tones of voice…repeat, paraphrase…work in small groups…use indirect questions…frame a question and await response.” (McCarthy, 2016). Also important to encourage the providing of “rich collections of stimulus, talking books and posters in the local language...” (McCarthy, 2016).

Social class language

Bernstein (1971) explained the language variation, Social Classes through his “Language deficit view”. (Bernstein, 1971, as cited in McCarthy, 2016). As being two codes: “restricted code…and…elaborated code.” (Bernstein, 1971, as cited in McCarthy, 2016).

Schools in general are known to be more elaborate coded than restricted, however, working-class children only use word restricted codes. (McCarthy, 2016). In this particular deficit view, working-class children are more likely to “use shorter sentences, have simple grammar, and don’t finish their sentences.” (Bernstein, 1971, as cited in McCarthy, 2016).
