Till Death do us Part
According to divorcerate.org the divorce rate in America for first marriage is 41 percent. Isn’t that crazy? What ever happened till death do us part? So many marriages are plummeting and simply not working out. Mark and Grace Driscoll American pastors and authors who preach at Mars Hill Church in Seattle Washington, wrote a book on marriage called “Real Marriage, The Truth About Sex, Friendship & Life Together”. This book focuses on ways to maintain or get back to a healthy relationship or marriage. The book is also great for single people wanting to know the true meaning of marriage and how to be a great spouse. Mark and Grace tell their story on how they brought their marriage back together and also talk about all the mistakes they made down the road, unlike most marriage books that just talk about the good. In “Real Marriage, The Truth About Sex, Friendship & Life Together” Mark and Grace Driscoll make the claim that friends before marriage is a good marriage after and that perusing Gods grace together helps lead them to a healthier relationship, by using personal experiences, comparison, cause and consequence and pathos.
Mark and Grace’s own personal experience’s, which serve, as an appeal to their ethos, is a rhetorical strategy they use in the book. The Driscolls talk about their own personal experiences with marriage early in the book. They discuss their story on how they meet and also the conflicts and issues they had early in their marriage. “I had a dream in which I saw some things that shook me to my core. I saw in painful detail Grace sinning sexually during a senior trip she took after high school when we had just started dating” (pg.11) This is quoted my Mark, and in the book he actually confronted Grace and asked if it was true and she confessed that yes, it was true. This was the biggest issue that stared all the conflict between the two. Mark felt unwanted, alone and was left with serious trust issues with Grace. “By a miracle of God’s grace, we stayed faithful to each other in our marriage.” (pg.16) This is another quote by Mark, and he is saying that by God’s grace they were still together even though they were going through dark times. Mark explains in the book that he believes the only reason their marriage worked out is because they both had such a strong relationship with Christ, they prayed for each other and Christ got them through the harsh and painful times. Neither Mark or Grace believed in divorce, so unlike most couples they prayed together, meet with a councilor and worked together to fix the issues.
Another rhetorical device that Mark and Grace use during the text is cause and consequence. Grace states in the book “Mark wished he hadn’t married me; I wished I hadn’t ever lied” (pg.19). This was said after their big fight about Grace cheating on Mark early on in their relationship. This quote resembles cause and consequence because it shows how Grace made the mistake of cheating on Mark and hiding it from him, which put a burden on her. Grace also had to suffer the consequence of having to confront Mark knowing that it could possibly ruin their marriage. Mark said things got rough for them but unlike most married coupled they stuck together, through thick and thin. Mark prayed to God and felt that God spoke to him saying to forgive Grace and lead her, lead her with strong arms and stand up when she can not, lead her and live a life that is pleasing to God, and also to strive to make each other better people. Mark and Grace use Pathos to try and persuade the readers to pursue and live a happier and healthier marriage. Mark believes that there are three components to create a healthier marriage. Be best friends, lead each other to Christ and have sex regularly. Yes there may be a lot of other essential components to having a good marriage but these are the three Mark believes are most important, Grace said, “key on these three topics and the others will fall in place.” (pg.46) A quote that I really like from Jeff Bethke a Christian poet states “For the singles, become friends first before you ever become lovers, peruse Jesus as your foundation before you get under the covers”. These are really strong words because many people “think” that they are in love so they marry each other although they have been dating for 8 months, then the same people complain that their partner wasn’t who they expected to be, no, you just didn’t know them well enough. Friends before marriage will make a good marriage after. Mark addresses in the book “have healthy sex regularly” (pg.97) Mark believes many couples are in conflict because one spouse (usually the man) believes that they do not have enough sex, which can cause tension and stress with another.
Another rhetorical strategy Mark and Grace use is comparison. In the book they both compare how marriage was 30 years ago to how it is now. Like I said earlier, the divorce rate is higher than ever. It seems like in today’s culture people misunderstand the true meaning of marriage, another quote I really like from Jeff Bethke states “Till death do us part, really means till the feelings go away”. Todays culture views marriage as a job, and once they are in conflict they panic and run away, instead of working out their issues. Divorce.com states, “Since 1970 marriages have declined 30%. Since 1970 divorces have increased 40%.” Back then both life and marriage were different. Women stayed at home while men were out working. Grace talks about marriage back then being more sacred, and today people feel that they have to get married, and if they don’t they are not accepted by their parents. Marriage is a choice it should be something people truly want to do, not forced to do.
In conclusion the book “Real Marriage, The Truth About Sex, Friendship & Life Together.” Written by Mark and Grace Driscoll is a book that uses several rhetorical strategies. The authors use Pathos to try and persuade the readers to enforce and live a happier and healthier marriage. They also use cause and consequence by the authors expressing their problems they had early on in their marriage, and how they have learned from their mistakes. Mark and Grace also use their own personal experience’s, which serve, as an appeal to their ethos, Talking about all the problems they faced with their marriage and how they got through the hard times, by praying to God and also leading their marriage with faith the grace of God. Lastly the authors use comparison; in the book they both compare how marriage was 30 years ago to how it is viewed today, believing that marriage was more sacred back then.

Submission of Wife; Love of Husband

...22. The believing wife and husband are to walk in a spirit of submission and love. As found in Ephesians 5:22-23, discuss the walk of each mate. (One page/250 words minimum) Groom: I,____, take thee,_____, to my lawful wedded Wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth Bride: I,_____, take thee,_____, to be my lawful wedded Husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and to obey, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I give thee my troth. The above are typical wedding vows from “The book of Common Prayer” (1928) used in England. In America, currently, the traditional vows have been modified considerably. Mostly on the woman’s vow that now has omitted the word “obey” and ends with “till death do us part” leaving God out of the vows and more often than not, out of the marriage. Paul outlines the believing wife’s and husband’s duties as they walk together through this life very clearly. A wife is walk in the Spirit of Submission to her husband acknowledging him as the head of authority in the family. (See I Corinthians 11:2-16; Colossians 3:18-19; I Peter 3:1-2) There are three reasons a wife is to be submissive: • To submit to God’s will: it is a...

Covenant Marriages

...Covenant Marriages A covenant marriage is an optional form of marriage that intends to signify the commitment between a couple. It consist of all couples, including already married couples can change their original marriage to a covenant marriage. It was founded in 1999, by a Baptist minister and his wife. This organization now claims fifty thousand couples and sixty-five cooperating ministries. This system of marriage was designed to strengthen couples in a relationship. They wanted to return to the biblical values of marriage as being “forever”. Along with the pledge of “To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish ‘till death do us part” there are other requirements when considering a covenant marriage. Couples who choose covenant marriages must complete a series of pre-martial counseling sessions. They must sign affiants attesting to their understanding that marriage is a life-long commitment. If a couple is at risk of divorce they must get approval only if infidelity, physical or sexual abuse, or conviction of a felony were the causes. One of the main reasons why covenant marriages are successful is because it aims for the couple to complete counseling sessions or separate for at least 2 years to save their marriage if possible. During counseling sessions it will tackle the reasons many couples divorce. Martial disaffection starts when there is a gradual loss of emotional...

If We Must Die Close Reading

...Project 2 If We Must Die Close Reading Claude McKays poem “If we must Die” has a strong underlying meaning that is brought out by a few lines within the middle of the poem. The quote goes from line 5 till the end of line 8. The quote has some serious power behind it and brings the whole meaning of the poem together. It develops the idea that if one were to die that it be a noble and honorable death as if you were to die a hero. If a hero were to die that is exactly the way there would go out, holding their head high and proud. McKays poem develops the idea of a hero and if one were to die a hero that they would let it be a nobly proud and honorable death. When the poem is first read it is vague exactly what McKay is referring to. But after rereading and analyzing specific parts of the poem lots of conclusions can be derived. Certain lines in the poem are what can make the argument so strong. The main quote that allows one to believe in such argument is on line 5 through 8. “If we must die—oh, let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy, Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!”(CITE***) This quote has a lot of meaning behind it in the sense that it highlights the main idea of the whole poem about noble and honorable death as a hero. There are certain word within the quote that help defy the main idea of the poem. They are certain words that really exemplify the main meaning of the poem as a whole. Mckay clearly chose...

...don’t have divorce and annulment it takes time and lots of money, It would help cut down the number of annulment cases that have piled up in court. It would be the way to escape if you’re already not happy in your relationship. But people might take advantage of it, this bill would just give them the chance to remarry countless times for lust and illegitimate children would rise. It is pushing away the possibility of enjoying a strong marriage bond, and keeping an alarm clock that should tell it’s time to separate ways. I disagree with this bill, aside from the Philippines is a Christian country; the family is the basic unit of society. If this will happen, gone are the days when the marriage vows “Till death do us part.” would be taken seriously and the vow will be “Till renewal do us part.“ The essence of why they are getting marriage in the first place will vanish and I don’t think it would be really fair to any children involved. Breaking a family is also breaking the society. It may also leave a big impact to their children; it would affect them mentally, emotionally, and physically. Marriage is a sacred union and it should be taken seriously. When you marry a person, you are entering into a life contract with them. The couple is obliged to strengthen the bond of their relationship to last longer. Each should be faithful and understanding. Problems may pass through your relationship but separation and escaping is never the answer to solve them, Happiness is a risk, be careful...

The Aging Population of Healthcare

...treat the medical needs of the aging population. The new aging population is living longer and the cause of death for the majority will be from different types of diseases. The baby boomers do not want to become a burden on their families for their healthcare needs. Because of this it will cause a demand for more physicians and different kinds of healthcare facilities to care for the aging population. “By 2030, one in five Americans will be over age 65, and the healthcare system is just beginning to feel the burden. “ “Not only are there more seniors, but they are also living linger. Within the last century, life expectancy has increased by nearly 30 years. For men born in the 1900 life expectancy was general till age 48, but by 2000 life expectancy for me jumped to 74” years old. For women life expectancy back in the 1900 was till age 51, but life expectancy for women jumped to 74 in year 2000, and by 2050 the average women will live till the age of 86. (Matthews, 2013) Since the life expectancy is longer, the cost of healthcare will raise and the retired individuals will need to plan for these expenses before their retirement. One option is to push back the “retirement age beyond the currently accepted age of 65 years.” “ Another strategy would be for workers to increase their savings while damping down the spending so they’d have more resources when they do retire.” People will need to make improvements “in financial literacy, teaching and helping people to make better...

...What makes cheaters want to cheat. whether its on a test ,relationship, or just life in general. There are cheaters around us everyday and they seem to always get away with it. Others are not so lucky and actually get caught. I personally think its wrong. You should be yourself and not worry about what other people want you to be. Be yourself and not the cheater. Cheating has so many forms, I think the worst one would have to be cheating in a relationship whether its a boyfriend or a girlfriend. If your going to be in a relationship with an individual you should be committed. You shouldn’t be going around behind each others backs seeing other individuals. What especially makes me mad is when a person in a marriage and they cheat on the spouse. What happened to the saying “till death do us part.” There are those very few who actually commit to that. Others end up cheating or ending up in divorce. I say that if your gonna cheat don’t be in a relationship. Throughout my school life since first grade, till now i’ve always encountered cheaters. I remember myself studying for a test for hours, then came the test days when id be sitting there taking my test and I look up and see a handful of individuals looking over at other peoples tests. It would make me mad to have studied for so long just to have someone look over my shoulder and take all my answers. When the grades would come back the cheaters always seemed to get a higher grade then the individuals who actually studied...

Life

...opposite of life is death, once one has stopped to exhibit or show the characteristics of life, he or she is said to be dead. Life is also made of many activities, but we will see how to perform this activities. WHAT DO WE REQUIRE IN LIFE TO SUCCEED? For us to be able to succeed in life, we must know the times and seasons which are required of us to do everything we are to achieve in life. This leads us to “the seasons of life”. SEASONS OF LIFE: Just like the day which is made up of 24 hours is classified into morning, afternoon and night; for example, we take breakfast in the morning, lunch in the afternoon and dinner at night, we can’t say that we take breakfast at night and dinner in the morning. So also, life is classified into morning, afternoon and night, and these times have specific activities it wants us to perform. Let us consider each of them below. MORNING: The morning at every person’s life is the time frame from when he/she was born to 20 years of age. At this age, one is required to learn how to walk, read, write, show respect, learn the basics of education, respect for parents, respect for teachers and other elders in the society. One should also learn how to behave himself or herself in the public, how to speak with good manners in the public. At the latter part of this morning, say from 16-18 years, one should begin to think of what to do in the afternoon part if his or her life. AFTERNOON: In the morning part of life, someone should...

Psychotic Depression

...Sigmund Freud, he states, “Not only did Freud’s clinical method stress attentive listening to his patients and assessment of the “texts” they created about themselves; it promoted a “metapsychology” or a seemingly structure (the unconscious mind) beneath a surface structure (the conscious mind) that we assumed was our self” (McComiskey 243). The conscious mind and the unconscious mind is two parts of who are, and how we act. We do things based on how we think, feel, and that’s how we respond to it. We have to be aware of the things that we do for us to see things that aren’t in the norm. Everything that we do always starts with “self.” In another perspective, In Pope, Studying English Literature and Language, He states, “Dreams, for Freud, are ‘the royal road to the unconscious’ (Pope 149). When it comes to Lockwood with him seeing things, one can infer that is him spacing off into another world, which would be more of the waking when he has a lot going...

Politeness

...internal feeling, which is an essential part of true politeness, is the same all over the world, however much its manifestations may differ. It is the desire to put those whom we meet perfectly at their ease, and save them from every kind of petty discomfort and annoyance. Benevolence in its ordinary sense implies love of our fellow-men and a desire to do all we can to promote their permanent happiness. The limited part of benevolence called politeness requires only an inclination to make them happy temporarily, while they are in our presence, and when this can be done without any sacrifice on our part or only with a slight sacrifice of personal comfort. It is possible that politeness may be dissociated from general excellence of character, as in the case of Charles II., who exhibited his remarkable urbanity of manner even on his death-bed by apologising for being “a most unconscionable time dying.” In certain cases there may even be a conflict between politeness and ordinary benevolence. For instance, a doctor may, by politely sacrificing his place in a conveyance to a lady, arrive late at a sickbed where his presence is urgently required. In such cases, of course, politeness should yield to the higher obligation. The particular actions in which politeness is manifested differ according to circumstances and according to the customs of different countries. As long as society recognises distinctions in rank, politeness requires us to show marks of respect to our superiors...

Both Parents Should Assume Equal Responsibility in Raising a Child

So after months of waiting the day finally came where I had to board the bus to Damai, Johor. Well to tell you the truth I was a little excited that I was about to go on a kind of adventure that would may or may not change my life. When the bus left the station I was a little worried about living my family behind. But that all changed when we hit the highway. There were hills that were filled with so much greenery that it was so hard to believe. Being a city kid the only jungle I see every day was the concrete jungle. The guys and girls who were on the same bus with me were singing and cracking jokes on the bus. After five hours of travelling, we arrive at the camp and training center. As we entered, I felt like a part of me had died. The campsite was like a war zone. The buildings look like they were from the eighteenth century and all though it was next to the beach the perimeter was barb-wired the mesh hall was crowded with other candidates from around the country. As we stepped out of the bus the heat wave that hit us was so great that I started sweating. Once we had taken our belongings from the bus, an instructor told us that we could have our lunch as it...
