Ambush
Three messages from Tim O’Brien’s Ambush In the military, men and women constantly go through traumatic experiences that change their lives forever. PTSD is something many of our service men and women go through.
Post traumatic stress disorder is when you go through a very hard situation, then many years after are still feeling the emotions and like your living it over again. Ambush is an anecdote from a much larger novel called The Things They Carried. O’Brien’s unique story is told from two different times and in different points of view. One for his daughter when she is young and the true version for when she is older. There are three importants messages in Tim O’Brien’s Ambush. Little girls tend to be very close with their fathers and look up to them a great deal. After his daughter Kathleen asked him a very disturbing question, Tim had to decide what the right choice of answer would be. “When she was nine my daughter asked if i have ever killed anyone. She knew about the war; she knew i had been a soldier.” (O’Brien) It's very uncommon for a nine year old to ask their parents if they had killed someone. Shocked he told her he had not, hiding the true answer. The innocence of this little girl and then her actions gives us perspective on the way times are changing and you never know who look sup to you. …show more content…
Anxious, Tim waited for hours in the brush of the ambush zone for something to happen. It was already too late by the time Tim had the chance to process the young man appearing in the shadows. The message here is that we sometimes do not think about our

...Ambushed In “Ambush,” Tim O’Brien portrays his regret and uncertainty to a war memory in which he instinctively kills an enemy soldier (MS 7). O’Brien recounts a night when his platoon moves into an ambush site shortly after midnight. Around dawn O’Brien recalls the moment a young enemy soldier emerges out of the morning fog. Without thinking O’Brien pulls the pin on a grenade and throws without aim. Seeing the grenade, the enemy soldier drops his weapon and begins to run, with a puff of smoke the grenade explodes and the soldier falls to the ground. O’Brien continues, explaining the regret and uncertainty the act of killing the enemy soldier elicits and the way the soldier ambushes his mind for the rest of his life. O’Brien includes imagery,...

...massive covering of the war enlarged the protests, and pictures and videos of dead or massacred Vietnamese civilians aroused great disapproval in the Western world of the American government. The paper also contains an analysis of how the book “The Things They Carried” shows the influence that the war had on the soldiers. The author of the book, Tim O’Brien, was a soldier in Vietnam himself, and in the book he tries to give a true picture, both of the war in general, and of the war that he experienced himself. The study discusses whether or not the USA has learned something from their failure in Vietnam, compared to how they handle the war in Iraq. It concludes that the Vietnam War had a great impact on the way of thinking for many young men and woman from that time, and that it had a horrible influence on the soldiers – who had very high suicide rates among them in the time after the war. It also concludes that there are too many similarities between Vietnam and Iraq, and that this can be a bad thing for the USA.
